my dell latitude e6410 is amazing. first of all, it has very convenient keyboard. it is a pleasure to use its keyboard. i don’t like the keyboard on my dell latitude 7400.i don’t enjoy island type keyboards, made popular by apple, as i understand. not convenient to type.
secondly, e6410 can see and connect to hotspots no other device is able to connect. the hotspots located far away. i don’t know why is this, if it has a longer antennae, or something else. but that’s also enjoyable.
it is not slim, doesn’t look cool, probably, but i like the way it looks. it has an old cpu - nehalem, but may be that’s an advantage, it has no known critical vulnerabilities, and patches don’t impact its performance.

i have showed these tiles back a couple of years ago. this time the tiles have been spotted at the remote village farm. i asked where they did get the tiles, and they answered that someone brought those from an old factory.
other places i spotted those - nissan service in yerevan - i guess they did not change anything, just use the old industrial building, and tapastan cafeteria on sarian street in yerevan.
btw, tapastan[տապաստան] is a wordplay - they refer to tapas, so it is a land of tapas (stan is an old persian suffix for a place or country) and, tapastan (but not with p[պ], but p’[փ], like in paris) means desert.

this is a very good blog post՝ back to basics about strings in C and Pascal. i suggest you to read it, and now i’ll tell you something else:
in Oberon, Wirth decided to give up on Pascal strings, and use zero terminated strings.
however, there is no need to run by the whole array to find out the length of the string. we don’t even need to have a separate field that holds the length՝ compiler knows the length of the static string.

moreover that ruby libraries for ap already exists, there needs to be work done on integration, which is not easy, of course, but i think necessary - because otherwise diaspora stays isolated from the rest of federated world.
i think we have to try to create a social demand for this. if there is a demand, these functionality is more likely to be implemented - whether by diaspora team or by the fork.
well, the main problem is, that we have lack of developers, which is because diaspora is not that popular, and it is already a miracle that we have diaspora, and we have the existing team.

so sometimes, though rarely, i need to reload #windowmaker. today something happened, i opened a ‘run’ menu, tried to type in it, and it hung in foreground of all windows. i could move the mouse over the firefox window behind, i could scroll it up and down, and i guess i could close the tab, because on mouse over event wos working. however i could not change to other windows, move to other workspace. dockapps were working.
so i changed to tty with alt+f2, made ps aux | grep wmaker
and got two wmaker processes, i needed the second: wmaker --for-real=
, got it’s pid. Now issued kill -s SIGUSR1
that pid.
that reloads wmaker. every window stays at its workspacke. you don’t notice any change.

Every time a new assignment or parameter passing is made, the reference count of the String has to be increased, this is an atomic lock, and is related to memory management, so it’s there whether you’re using simple reference-counting or copy-on-write.
Under a GC, no atomic lock is required, a simple reference (pointer) has to be copied. This is very efficient, locally, but the memory management costs are just deferred to a later garbage collection phase. Since immutable strings don’t have reference to other objects, the GC for them can theoretically happen in parallel without any drawbacks (assuming the GC supports it).
So under a GC, an immutable String type makes a whole lot of sense, as implementing a copy-on-write one requires a lot of effort, and a mutable one is problematic multi-threading wise.

The point is: the colder the better. However, there are some practicality issues as well. Frozen papers last longer than refrigerated papers, but they need to be thawed before use, and well packaged to avoid moisture. That’s too cumbersome and not without danger for general and frequent use. A good compromise is refrigerator storage well above freezing. I have used papers as old as 10 years that way without ill effect other than a small loss in speed and contrast, which is easily compensated for.

well, i was thinking - is it indeed that much touching, thrilling as it sounds? may it be that this is a misinformation? or the ministry of defence would like to keep them longer, and had to cover the deal with “their own will”? no - the ministry of defence already refused to satisfy this. and i think it really happened, they asked to delay demobilization, because we have rather transparent society, and nobody would fake that, by knowing the truth will be known anyway.

Armenian officials claimed that Azerbaijani drones launched an attack on the Tuvush province town of Berd, targeting civilian infrastructure. Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan said that one of Azerbaijani drones was downed.
Stepanyan also charged that the Azerbaijani military used civilians as shields, placing artillery close to the village of Dondar Gushchu in the Tovuz district about 10 kilometers (six miles) from the border.
“The Azerbaijani side has surrounded its own population with artillery batteries, making them a target, and then complained that the Armenian forces fired in that direction,” she said on Facebook where she posted images of the Azerbaijani artillery around the village.

It’s not just endlessly reinventing the wheel, it’s often dropping the new wheels onto the piles of old wheels underneath. I’ve noticed similar things on Linux where looking for how to set something up in ALSA, I find many forum posts telling someone to just install PulseAudio (I’m yet to find anything that I need to do that PulseAudio can do and ALSA can’t)! The answer to how to solve one simple problem should not be to install an additional layer of complexity over the top of whatever you were using.

mtp is extremely slow. i am used to #sailfish, and i use #sshfs with it, and i get surprised every time how “custom” “corporate” solutions like #mtp suck in that #android and #enterprise world. if i do tests, the speed difference might be more than 100 times.
so if you know #gmic (https://gmic.eu) it can work with luts (colour lookup tables). and gmic comes with a set of tables by itself.
so it is easy to apply luts to images by using these default luts. i don’t know yet how those luts originated, did anyone test, for instance, films, shooting colour checkers under reference light, but i wanted to see how the luts look. all of them. so i made a small script which callse gmic with all presets.

and now i can compare those.
as $l
represents lut name, the names of files have lut in them.
i did not choose any particularly good image in terms of colours or scene, just something what i found in my phone that day.

this is an amazing building, designed by paul kaloustian, i know him. it belongs to coaf - children of armenia, they have buses, which bring kids from the vicinity to classes - drawing, music, theatre, dances, yoga, programming, various natural languages. they also have a hotel, in that building, so staying in it helps the project. it is not expensive, but the location and design are amazing. the centre built with modernistic aesthetics in mind. in hotel you can see naked concrete walls. i like that very much. stayed there a couple of days ago, hostpitability was extra ordinary even by armenian norms.

one of my friends reminded me of this channel. i have actually been in the recording studio in Vanadzor, which you can see at the end of the video, and Lernapat is the village very close to Vanadzor, like almost a suburb. the guys visit villages, film the life there, talk to the people, and collect songs. then record those with the aesthetics close to them - they like rock.

today i connected my #xa2 with #sailfish to the docking station of dell 7400 laptop at work, then got a jabber message, and… i was unable to answer, the onscreen keyboard did not appear. hmmm, i thought, and disconnected it fro usb type c. then the onscreen keyboard appeared. then i thought - may it be, it recognized the keyboard connected to the dock?
and tried to write something with keyboard, - and yes, letters on the screen of xperia appeared.

i have converted xkb layouts to special qt format.
the only drawback now is that i cannot change the input language with alt+shift or something like that, i need to go to sailfish settings, and change the input language every time. but well, that’s less an issue when i write english, because i have all the symbols at hand, but when i write armenian and need to use the hashtag symbol, i need to switch the keyboard. Programming makes me think that people value the things they do because they were hard, not because they were useful. Once I master the hard thing, I’m proud of myself and find it easy to forget that perhaps that damn thing should not have been so hard in the first place. Probably true for a lot of human activities. Stuff should simply be easier, that is all.

we climbed a hill near the lake, well, to be precise, water reservoir, and the map, maep with openstreetmap tiles, showed that we are in the water. i switched to google maps, and it showed an island. and them microsoft satellite photos showed that there’s a water. so apparently water goes as high, probably in the spring, and we saw the traces of water on nearby mountains even higher, and the hill remains under the water fully.
there were a lot of small burs on the ground, probably very fresh, they don’t have time to grow up.

The Wayland architecture integrates the display server, window manager and compositor into one process. You can think of Wayland as a toolkit for creating clients and compositors. I don’t know much about Wayland but the immediate question is: Why would you want to do that? If Wayland has it’s own window manager built in why do you need another one? It’s like support for Windows or OS X. Not needed as those systems have their own window managers and not really support replacing it. This is contrary to X which has no window manager by default and allows and encourages others to implement it. Window Maker is a window manager for X (as stated in the info box) and Wayland aims to be an incompatible replacement of X. So they are not really a good match at first sight.

The biggest and most frightening impact of the AI revolution might be on the relative efficiency of democracies and dictatorships. Historically, autocracies have faced crippling handicaps in regard to innovation and economic growth. In the late 20th century, democracies usually outperformed dictatorships, because they were far better at processing information. We tend to think about the conflict between democracy and dictatorship as a conflict between two different ethical systems, but it is actually a conflict between two different data-processing systems. Democracy distributes the power to process information and make decisions among many people and institutions, whereas dictatorship concentrates information and power in one place. Given 20th-century technology, it was inefficient to concentrate too much information and power in one place. Nobody had the ability to process all available information fast enough and make the right decisions. This is one reason the Soviet Union made far worse decisions than the United States, and why the Soviet economy lagged far behind the American economy.
However, artificial intelligence may soon swing the pendulum in the opposite direction. AI makes it possible to process enormous amounts of information centrally. In fact, it might make centralized systems far more efficient than diffuse systems, because machine learning works better when the machine has more information to analyze. If you disregard all privacy concerns and concentrate all the information relating to a billion people in one database, you’ll wind up with much better algorithms than if you respect individual privacy and have in your database only partial information on a million people. An authoritarian government that orders all its citizens to have their DNA sequenced and to share their medical data with some central authority would gain an immense advantage in genetics and medical research over societies in which medical data are strictly private. The main handicap of authoritarian regimes in the 20th century — the desire to concentrate all information and power in one place — may become their decisive advantage in the 21st century.

In one incident in October 2017, a Palestinian laborer posted to his private Facebook account a picture of himself in his workplace, alongside a bulldozer. Adjacent to the image he wrote, “Good morning!” A Facebook translation algorithm made a small error when transliterating the Arabic letters. On December 6, 2017, another crucial milestone was reached when Google’s AlphaZero program defeated the Stockfish 8 program. Stockfish 8 had won a world computer chess championship in 2016. It had access to centuries of accumulated human experience in chess, as well as decades of computer experience. By contrast, AlphaZero had not been taught any chess strategies by its human creators—not even standard openings. Rather, it used the latest machine-learning principles to teach itself chess by playing against itself. i have deleted my twitter. created it in june 2017. to stay in touch with local community. from envy, i saw people who know each other, who socialize online, and that’s where the envy were coming from. I also wanted to socialize, and be part of the community. to not feel disconnected.

and when i express myself on diaspora, nobody hears me. local community is too small. and i don’t hear “them”, because diaspora community does not represent the local society. so we don’t or cannot have discussion. may be we already agree on many things. that does not leave the place to discuss. it’s like, i’ve heard that there is a such political situation/problem/discussion, and I stand near the mirror, and tell myself what I think. How can I think something of it, if I don’t even know the context as much, as the people who socialize?
so anyway, i had a seizure of not participating in the deal, de facto deal, that centralized services suggest. i get rid of the “celebration of life” and communications with locals online, and go back to the state I was for years before that. this leads to, sorry for this word, marginalization, isolation and being disconnected from locals, and local publicly important themes.
i’ll try to compensate, may be, this, by staying connected with foreigners here, people what have different contexts, other level problems, etc, which may lead me to even more not understanding the atmosphere around me. I don’t know how long will it take, but I guess, it took years last time, why not now?
still, I don’t think rare real life connections will also contribute to me not being disconnected. So this is it. I know it’s tough, but it is also hard to participate by the suggested rules. I also don’t know if I’ll be active here, I have two jobs now, and get pretty exhausted.

“We used to think our fate was in our stars,” James Watson, one of the scientists who discovered the structure of dna, declared in 1989. “Now we know, in large measure, our fate is in our genes.” The implications were clear. Unravelling the genetic code would bring an exquisite understanding of bodies and their afflictions but also of minds. After the completion of the human genome project, which Watson initially led, such hopes faded. Individuals’ physical or mental characteristics, and their susceptibility to diseases, turned out to be extraordinarily complex. Some of the swagger went out of genetics. Now it is back.
For much of the 20th century, psychology was dominated by the idea that human nature is a blank slate embellished by upbringing and environment. “Blueprint” begins by describing how Mr Plomin and others have demonstrated that, on the contrary, behavioural differences are strongly influenced by genetics. Studies of adopted children indicate that in disposition they more closely resemble their genetic parents than their adoptive ones. Even when they are reared apart, identical twins are more alike than the non-identical kind (who are as genetically different as any brother or sister).
Such research shows that, on average, dna accounts for about half of the psychological differences between people, with the remainder due to environmental factors; the actual proportion varies with the characteristic in question. More recently scientists have combed through human genomes to identify thousands of genetic variants associated with particular traits, from height and weight to educational attainment and neuroticism. Tests costing less than £50 ($65) can measure genetic propensity to different outcomes—to be overweight, or to go to university.
For those who imagine all that leaves enough wriggle room for benevolent parents or teachers to exert an influence, Mr Plomin has bad news: these environmental factors are themselves substantially influenced by genes. For example, his work shows that genes account for about a third of the differences between the television viewing habits of children. Worse, the remaining tranche of environmental influence appears to be mostly attributable to unpredictable events rather than, say, being brought up in a house full of books.
These findings, says Mr Plomin, imply that “parents don’t make much of a difference in their children’s outcomes beyond the genes they provide”; dna is a “fortune teller” that “makes us who we are”. Environmental effects are “important”, but “there’s not much we can do about them”.
Mr Plomin insists that, armed with their genetic test scores, individuals can take action to counter or augment their innate proclivities; but they are hardly likely to succeed if their psychology is as delimited by genes as he suggests. An equally plausible possibility is that these scores will be used to stigmatise genetic “have-nots” or to justify discrimination. This is the high road to eugenics, about which Mr Plomin is largely silent.
Instead he advocates the use of such scores when choosing between candidates for a job. Yet a person with high scores for traits associated with coding skills is not necessarily a good programmer—they merely have a higher likelihood of being one. A candidate who had demonstrated their aptitude for the job would feel rightly miffed to be passed over in favour of a genetically gifted incompetent. Likewise, though doctors may find it useful to know that a patient is genetically predisposed to be obese, the best way to establish their weight is to ask them to step on the scales.
These are problems of emphasis rather than accuracy. But in a field as ethically fraught as genetics, even that can be troubling. For instance, as Mr Plomin notes, the size of the genetic component of a particular trait—its “heritability”—varies between different populations. The heritability of educational attainment in Norway has increased since the second world war as the country widened access to health care and schools, flattening out environmental effects. That trend seems, worryingly, to have reversed in America in the 21st century. The irony is that the heritability of many traits rises if states do more to provide for all their citizens equally.
You might conclude that without broad measures to tamp down inequalities of opportunity, genes have fewer opportunities to shine. “Blueprint” instead touts the importance of dna in shaping the individual. Hubris indeed.

First things first: printf is expecting a valid (i.e. non-NULL) pointer for its %s argument so passing it a NULL is officially undefined. It may print “(null)” or it may delete all files on your hard drive–either is correct behavior as far as ANSI is concerned (at least, that’s what Harbison and Steele tells me.)

unlike digital sensors that use Bayer interpolation, a scanner captures the RGB data for every pixel. single pass, three pass, whatever. you get the full monty. it doesn’t make much sense to degrade the data so it can be interpolated from a RAW file. instead the user can save the data as either a (8/16bit) JPEG, or (8/16bit) TIFF file. Vuescan let’s you save the scan data into a special kind of extendable TIFF called a DNG. the DNG wrapper lets the scan program separate the tonal data from the color data. using LR or PS one can then apply their own secret sauce. :)

may i rant a little about sailfish 3.0 ?
omg, why this android like top menu? is it the urge to not, accidentally stand out? i really don’t understand.
my gesture to close programs was to swipe top down. and people were amazed by that. now to close the program we need to minimize it first, then close. aaah, dull? in order to close minimized app one needs to press on it, then leave and press the ‘x’ button. so three steps to just close the app.
why? sailfish was supposed to be convenient, geeky, other.
i also dislike recent gallery changes, where we lost going back by left gesture, and need now to use an icon ‘x’ to close the photo and get a gallery view.

when you read about the magical ring or the marodeurs map, you wonder, why those are the rare exemplars, why they could not be recreated. i thought that if the humanity once had the technology, and went further, it means it can create better devices, and certainly can recreate the past ones.
now i understand, that there are a lot of pieces of disappearing technology in our world.
apparently, it took ~10 years for impossible project to achieve comparable quality with the polaroid integral film. and still, they cannot fit 10 papers in to the cartridge, they fit only 8.
apparently, no one is able to produce peel apart film comparable in quality with fuji fp-100c film.
and even if the company would document and publish, as patent free, open source, the whole process, still, there are things you need to learn from others. lets say if there’s a team working on some project, it cannot document everything, but new members of the team get the knowledge which is not documented. or they need to stare at the source code for weeks to guess what those 3 lines are for.
so now i understand, that i have a piece of disappearing technology in my freezer. it’s fp-100c, and i understand, that i have cameras, that will be very hard to produce again. that is one more reason to value old things. only starting to produce something comparable is not realistic, needs a lot of resources.
these are my adventures on connecting bluetooth keyboard to jolla sailfish device.
first of all, the keyboard would not connect. manual says just ‘press the connect button and let them pair’, but devices were not able to connect. i have tried to type ‘1234’ on a keyboard and press enter, then sailfish asked me for a password, i typed ‘1234’ and again got the message indicating that device is not paired. then i repeated the same with ‘0000’ and somehow, the device works.
now, how would i use my favourite programmers dvorak layout, and armenian typewriter?

well, there is a problem, that if the bt keyboard is on, then the login screen of jolla requires you to use hardware keyboard to login, not the screen keyboard. so i turn off the bt keyboard during restart.

since i know sailfish, it’s even hard to read texts on the internet, because those are either black on the white background, or whitish on the dark background, and all these themes are predefined by the designer.
while i got used that i generate the theme from the picture i like, therefore text can be on a blurred image i have chosen, and the colours are chosen by me, and its not just white on dark or black on white, or whatever.

Борьба приобрела децентрализованный характер и застала врасплох полицию, которая до этого привыкла действовать по привычному сценарию: протестующие собираются в одном месте, где-то рядом силы полиции, и в случае необходимости они силой разгоняют акцию, задерживая лидеров. Если раньше полиция задерживала несколько десятков человек на несколько часов, и акции сводились на нет, то теперь методы полиции уже не действовали. Более того, чем больше полиция задерживала людей, тем больше протестующих выходило на улицы. Кроме того похищение лидеров протеста 22 апреля сыграло злую шутку: на улицы вышло как минимум в два раза больше людей, чем Пашинян собирал до своего похищения.
Правозащитник отмечает, как на практике выглядело применение этого закона: «Заявляешь о начале стихийной акции и можешь на протяжении 6 часов проводить собрание. Через 6 часов, заявляешь об окончании акции и тут же сообщаешь о начале новой стихийной акции. Но власти хотели изменить положение дел в этой части закона. К счастью, им этого не удалось». Важным фактором является также то, что по закону за административные нарушения не предусмотрен арест, а только штраф. Причем задержание может длиться не более трех часов, после чего задержанные должны быть либо освобождены, либо обвинены в уголовном преступлении.

Because now it is hard for them to be invisible while approaching our positions (we have cameras and drones), the easiest way to bring military to the border is conducting military exercises. And now Azerbaijan is conducting military exercises without a pause, and it looks like those are very expensive. c. The probability of war will be much higher after July 14, when the football championship will be over. Before that starting the war can offend the Russian side. By the same logic, now they almost don’t shoot at the borders. e. The offensive probably will start from the south, so that less people will be affected, to decrease response of international community.

yesterday evening i spent with iranian armenian architects who live and work in usa now, and they were telling me, that they are amazed, that they are able to see and greet our ‘stars’, people whom they know from theatrical performances, which hey watched on youtube, in cafeterias on the streets of the city. #yerevan
so our new pime minister makes lives on facebook every day, even several times per day. first he showed how the gov rooms look like, then he tells us about the news and decisions he made, and why did he make those. these all without pathos, tables, very simple, he continues to be that simple guy who, it seems does not enjoy these luxurious rooms, and tries to be useful to us. #armenia

They were making idle talk about holiday routines when the anchor wondered if Pashinyan had asked Santa for anything political.

tomorrow parliament has to vote for the new prime minister.
looks like for now republican party did not suggest a candidate. so KK is out of the game for now. the other big party which belongs to the rich oligarch, and was in the alliance with the ruling republicans said they will vote for our candidate. then his party, which has %7 in the parliament. (faked elections) and then dashnaks, who also were in the alliance with the ruling republicans said they’ll vote for our candidate. so the rats flew the sinking ship.
republicans did not say they will vote for Nikol, and even if everybody above will vote for him it is still not enough because republicans have majority. so if 7 or 8 of them vote, then Nikol will become a prime minister for some time. If not, then the parliament has to kill itself and new elections should be conducted. This will be the survival way of republicans because the laws still allow them to fake elections, also they have city/village majors, etc, so they have the resource. On the other hand if Nikol is elected, then he will propose his new election laws to decrease the probability of falsifications, and then according to his plan we have to have new elections, fair this time.
so this is a long process, and the road is hard. anyway tomorrow everybody will be at the streets to support him so that he could be elected.
so to me it looks like everything is much worser than it could be. if we just left serj it would be better. this guy ‘karen karapetyan’, former gazprom chinovnik, who has close connections with oligarchs, and is now leading republican party, is much worser than serj. so many reasons, it needs time to explain. in short nothing will change, except that this guy has no local background, has nothing to loose here. he can just burn the country and fly to russia at any moment. but he gets already established system, he is obviously more controllable than serj, nothing will change - again business spheres will continue to be divided between a couple of people who don’t even pay taxes.
karen karapetyan (men’s name in armenian) tried to establish an emergency state already, but police/army refused.
my expectations are - if parliament will not vote for our, people’s candidate, and he or someone from republicans will become a prime minister, use own people as police/army heads, and because they cannot control the country, they will declare emergency state and solve their problems.
there are questions - will army or police be ready to shoot own citizens? police was ready last time, 10 years ago, when serj kame to power. we had 10 deads that time.
i sincerely don’t see any ways out, looks like a dead end.
so the parliament will gather to choose a new prime minister at may 1, and we have to continue protests till and after that.
but this is not inspiring, when government obviously is not legit, have absolutely no support in people, but they persist on ruling.

this decentralized strategy worked! they have detained Nikol, but realized it does not matter. Nikol did not control the situation. everybody was self-organizing and showing the government has no control over population. we with IT people created a couple of telegram groups to coordinate our civil disobedience actions. police was running from here to there, and they had no enough forces to control everything. they were asking each other for support and people, and had no resources, though we have a lot of police, unfortunately.
authorities were desperate, they detained leaders of the movement, then started to use criminals to threaten protesters. just unknown guys in masks, armed, got out to streets and started to beat protesters.
that caused even more waves of disobedience and more people at the evening protests. around 180.000 people in one of recent meetings.
so they realized they have no country to rule and have to leave. DDOS - Distributed Denial of Serj worked.
The ruling republican party seems dead. They are nothing without the head. And the dictators seem to surround them by toads, so they have even noone to replace them. They cannot trust those toads they nurtured for years.
That’s probably one of the reasons why Serj tried to stay for the third time. They just had noone to trust.
I am very proud of my people, who did not tolerate Serj, and it is indeed unbelievable that we succeeded without a drop of blood. we had several injured people, when police was trying to pressure us, not more than 10.
And Nikol said during the rally - “remember that christian saying, give the second cheek, if someone heat you? every one who answers to violence with violence is against our movement, because it will make government an excuse to use the force.”
So this was sort of other example of satyagraha, when nobody was listening to the regime, and people on streets were supporting protesters by signalling. first days they did not get it, and was annoyed, but after three days most of them were happy we are blocking streets. many people around were joining us, and drivers were getting out of the cars, and behaving like the cars are broken, so they have to repair those.
and the very emotional thing is showing open palms of hands. whenever police were trying to pressure people, they were showing open palms of hands, raised up, that they are not armed, it’s peaceful protest. this was very impressive and beautiful.

hey, #diaspora #podmin, #podmins, #devs. yesterday evening i have logged in to my server, and noticed, there are delays. run ‘top’ and saw ~120 load average. opened a production.log, it was scrolling like crazy.
then noticed that someone somewhere, may be on irc, wrote that geraspora is down, and then, that geraspora is back. and i guess, may be geraspora came back and started to send a lot of messages to other servers, and my machine is weak small server, and it was under the load because of that? i have tried to reboot, and saw that my server is ok, just it has to process a lot. so did anyone experience sloweness (my server was under such a load it was unusable) . and then i saw that the log does not scroll as fast, and load average started to go down. and then i did not touch anything, just server became useable. do any of you have monitoring logs, did you have cpu/memory usage peaks in the evening?

— mastodon streams are autoupdating. as i understand they use push, and it’s very fast. also i like it because you see life is happening. diaspora page has to be reloaded manually, it only shows notification count. — diaspora has no API, mastodon has. — that’s why there are several useful applications for mastodon, but no one for diaspora. — mastodon allows to customize your page a bit more, and to choose that long header image. — mastodon has user data import/export, therefore migration, but that’s coming to diaspora. — mastodon provides a feature to silence not only a person, but node or tag. — mastodon provides separate stream for all public posts on a node, and that i find useful. — it’s much easier to set up local community rules from the admin interface. — admin interface has much more features.
cultural:
in diaspora, in my opinion, people not from our node usually tend to not write, but share links or images. also, they are mostly from europe, and leftist. let’s take in to consideration, that american lefts are right compared to european lefts.
in mastodon people from not our node usually come from twitter background, therefore the text is more common there. even if it’s realtime shitposting, i love that. also, they seem different to me, not necessarily mostly left. there seem to be more people, and more technical as well. it looks like there are more life than in diaspora.

i collect this sugar envelopes, get them at the cafeterias. it started because i never had sugar at home, and one of my friends was getting very frustrated that i would suggest him tea without sugar. so, instead of buying sugar i started to get those small sugar envelopes i was getting at the cafeterias with tea. then i became obsessive about it. and today i don’t allow anyone to touch my collection. though the friend also learned by himself, that the sugar is not the best thing to use sugar, and gave it up.
this was said because now there’s such an envelope on my table, given to me by another friend when we met last time. when she was somewhere last time, she got the sugar envelope to bring to me. and that’s extremely nice feeling.
there’s a turkish chewing gum, called ‘love is…’, it shows small sketches on relationships.
so i would say, friendship is… getting sugar envelopes for him, so that you can give it when you meet.

Abstract: We trained chickens to react to an average human female face but not to an average male face (or vice versa). In a subsequent test, the animals showed preferences for faces consistent with human sexual preferences (obtained from university students). when looking through the made photos, i first thought that probably she’ll like this and this picture, because her face is expressive there, but then i saw a photo, i have chosen.

this is a very bad scan. shot in june 2014. airport of goris, armenia, near shinuhayr village. my father told me, he was a pilot, that they were calling this airport an aircraft carrier, because the runway ends at the gorge border. no other place for an airport in the vicinity.

i feel so stupid, i was browsing through my bios to turn off hyperthreading, because some build scripts run 4 processes on my actually 2 core machine, so i went to bios to disable hyperthreading, and i have noticed the setting for charging, and an instruction, that if i press fn+f2, i can stop the charging, and not overcharge the battery! of course there had to be such a feature, but i thought it’s too good to be true.
i even remember the bios update of somene’s, i guess asus, which would not change the battery more than 80%, and it is not always convenient, what if i know i need the fully charged battery today?
thinking that something is too good to be true is a pattern, by the way, i usually think that something good is not really possible, but that gives me opportunities to not keep high hopes in people, if someone promised to do something, i still have to have a backup, and i check if anything went successful, whatever i do, if it’s a copy of the file, or new function in the code. thus i keep better relationships with people, because i don’t expect them to be responsible, trustworthy, good, willing to help, etc, but on the other hand i don’t manipulate them to be responsible by let’s say being offended, so that may be does not make world a better place.

i have a feeling that diaspora is a trap you don’t invite people in. trap in the sence, you give them false hopes, they come and try however they can to find themselves here, and they leave frustrated. how does mastodon feel? it has community and ‘life’, right?
having commitment and integrity to who you are keeps you away from those who may bring you frustrations, and brings you closer to those you would enjoy socializing with. if there are any.
this is not even a problem of a small society. it is on the scale of the planet.
relationships have dependencies and prerequisites. for a friendship or romantic relationship to exist, the participants have to meet. meeting means that they exist in the same world.
i say world, and mean dimensions and time. i say dimension, and mean, shared environment, existence, way of life. in one world everything most important exists around the theatre: discussions about directors, current performances, unanswered questions. in the other world, it’s when and where to harvest food. in some world the main, big and fat tag in the tag cloud is politics. somewhere it’s literature. some people live in a world where it’s important to know modern hardware, models, trends. some people live in a world of mathematical proofs. the worlds have to overlap, this is a prerequisite.
worlds can overlap somewhere outside of the main tag area. people go to clubs, pubs, political rallies, film festivals, art exhibitions, IT conferences. so if one does enjoy friday nights, and the other has no idea what people do on friday night and where, then they won’t meet and get acquainted. and even if they have been acquainted somewhere else, in order for the relationship or a friendship to sustain there must be willingness and readiness to merge the worlds, existences, or at least some parts of those. but why?
what can decrease the amount of frustration in the world, is the recognition that the person you had an idea to be involved with somehow lives in the other world. you don’t get involved with someone from the mars. so it’s not stupid to recognize that let’s say this young girl who talks about the theatre all the time, has her own world, and options to consider there. and that may be if you cross the world border, and establish your troops there, because you think you need this, that’s an aggression, and unjustified behaviour to mess with someone’s life.

you know, i love georgia, and i love tbilisi, and i would like to spend a month there, because i am extremely tired of the constant high load, i would describe tbilisi as a best city in the world i have seen, and the second would be new york. i mean, now you can imagine how i do love tbilisi. i also love the georgian language, i sincerely would like to be fluent in it, it sounds very beautiful to my ear.
now after this disclaimer i would like to tell you, that it’s surprising, how we, in caucasus can feel ourselves losers, if the neighbour could achieve something which we did not.
once i was in tbilisi, and there was this girl, who was sharing her experience with the mentioned by me in the previous post application ‘picsart’. she said - “it’s an amazing application, i do not use photoshop any more, you don’t need to as well, you can edit photos in picsart, and it has outstanding features”. well, i doubt you don’t need photoshop or gimp if you have picsart installed, but still, i said, not without feeling good about it, of course, that it’s an armenian startup.
now, because i write it here on my english stream, i need to justify why did i feel good. i know i personally did not participate the development of the app. but those are people like me. i did not study with them, they are a bit younger, but they share the same university teachers (not the best in the world, obviously), the same blockade, and crappy political situation, they went to serve in the army near the borders, like me, and they had some good ideas to create/participate the development of the application. i think it was possible to make it technically much better, i dislike the implementation, but still. the same feeling i do have, when i see good architecture. i know those who did the projects - again, people i know, those are some of us, i am one of them, not better, not worse, and that means we, are actually capable, as a society to produce good buildings, make good design, i would like, and not ashamed to show. even less ashamed than to show picsart, i would not be proud to show picsart. but that means, that though the ruling elite has its own toy architects, who are, of course stupid, because no sane person with dignity would collaborate with the regime, and that’s why we have a lot of buildings i am ashamed of, we as a society are able to produce something i won’t be ashamed of.
so if i can be ashamed of something, then i may allow myself to be proud of something as well.
and yes, i know the yerevan is completely spoiled place, it’s not what it was, it’s not what it could become. one of my friends (friends? acquaintances) uses the tag #independentlandscape for that, which is really sad, because yes, in the independent armenia we are not able to have the ruling elite we would choose. there are different global factors, including russia’s support of our current government, and the real war situation. i used to say ‘semi war’ to describe the situation, when no active military actions are taken every day, but the shootings are real, and every day people near border live under the fire. it’s real. just those in yerevan, or those who don’t take their noses out of yerevan don’t feel that. don’t know that. don’t understand that.
so back to the story, the girl in tbilisi was showing the picsart as an app, because of which you won’t need photoshop. and i said - yes, i know the app, it’s our local startup. and she said - ‘no, it’s not possible, it’s a good, important application, how could it be developed in armenia?’. and i said: ‘yes, my friends work there, i know the people who does it, i have been in their office.’ and she was in denial for some time, and then she was very upset.
so to me, georgian successes in fighting corruption, let’s say, those give me a hope, that we also can do that. this is something very close to us, and it demonstrates that we also can do that, it is real, observable, tangible. so i am glad we have georgia as a good example and inspiration.
what is frustrating, is when your neighbours have this competition feeling with you, you cannot be good for them by definition, because they are superior. it is sad when they, instead of being glad for your achievements, feel upset about those. we go to georgia, but they mostly don’t come to us. the only case a lot of young people from georgia came to yerevan was the concert of the ‘system of the down’, the armenian group at the main square of yerevan. so this is the story. sorry for bothering you. till.

i’ve asked why didn’t he use email and he said it did not pass through his mind. several people also agreed that email only has an association with work and tons of emails they need to read but don’t want to.

i have new photos of #lori-1 wind farm. well, “new”, made in summer. i thought it’s kodak ektar, but it turned out to be kodak cft inside the kodak ektar roll. if i would new it’s b/w i would process it myself. whatever, i get this roll developed just recently, among other 9 rolls, and my slides are still undeveloped, because the lab in the other city did not have chemicals.
btw, i mentioned it again, i love this film. that film never stops to amaze me. as well as the place, it’s always always always different. unfortunately, it does not look possible to find kodak cft film in the vicinity any more. it was medical film, and some people got their hands on it in hospitals, and sold. now the resource is exhausted. it is not available on global markets as well. it was only possible to find in the region.
now i would say, that #լոռի֊1 tag in my blog, which features the place i always revisit, shows my development, but not (merely?) as photographer, but as a person. so these are the photos, attached to this post.

and the comment on the second screenshot suggests such a question: “whom crimea belongs to?”.
the background to understand how brilliant the joke is: what you may not know about russia, is that when the crimea annexation happened, there was a lot of euphoria and excitement about that, and the phrase which became a meme, and was often written without whitespace - крымнаш, which means “crimeaisours”.
when someone says “crimeaisours” you can make a lot of assumptions about them. as i am against militarism and aggression, and for me aggression is evil, you can imagine that i do not share that excitement. and when someone labels that as “annexation”, then you know whom do you talk with. i found one of my best friends by that phrase, i’ve just heard around “was it before or after crimea annexation?”. so she became one of my best friends, and later she was pressured by the government and police. btw she is ethnic russian.

minolta xg-m has an amazing viewfinder, bright, big. i think i never seen any like that. mamiya 1000dtl has a good one, but not that good. also, it has the led panel near the scale with the shutter values in the viewfinder, like mamiya z series, which is very convenient. and also shows the aperture value. the film advance lever is of an amazing quality. you just feel the quality while moving it, and holding camera in hands. #minoltat

i have a lot of film scanned with noritsu scanner at the lab. at first i was happy, especially with the results from the consumer fuji films. but the cinema fuji film - eterna, was obviously out of balance, with green shift. i’ve tried to colour balance, and was again sort of satisfied by the results, but then decided to scan same pictures with my minolta. hmm, here i think the quality is much better. there are even colours noritsu did not capture, the photo on the right have deeper colours, but if i try to do something like that with the noritsu scanned photo, i get red skin, and artefacts. so i am confused, i paid for the scanning, because i have very limited time recently, and wanted to get cool out of the scanner photos without spending much time on the process.

Black is a statement. It gives you a “look,” and fairly uncomplicatedly. It says you’re damn serious about life, and have neither the time nor the inclination to faff about with silly colour combinations and patterns. Nobody should ever mistake you as the type of person to listen to anything but dark music played in dark rooms with unsmiling people who want their clothes to be the physical extension of the abstract ideas that techno brings to the dance floor. And for the most part, it works. Nobody sees a monochrome press shot of two dudes dressed in tight black tee shirts and skinny jeans staring forlornly away from the camera and thinks, “maybe those guys play lots of disco!”
But most importantly, wearing black tells people you’re “in the know.” And in a subculture like dance music, where superior knowledge is traded like cultural capital, being in the know is basically everything. Showing up to an after party as the only dickhead dressed in yellow screams “I’m new here,” which won’t exactly earn you a surprise invitation into the green room for a cheeky one with the cool kids.

he also called azerbaijan a nazi state. and i must admit his words had an effect on many - we here are disconnected from the existence in azerbaijan, we read the words spoken there, and the propaganda, but we don’t take it seriously, because we on a deep level, cannot believe it happens and we are longing for peace so much, we can believe it’s indeed reachable. situation here is that people are much less aggressive-nationalistic, would like to integrate, feel themselves the part of the world, not being isolated, solve problems peacefully, and many would accept significant trade offs to establish the stable peace. and the question is, will those trade offs, that weaken de facto armenian security on the field, for the some recognized by both parties intermediate status for artsakh, will those trade offs indeed pay by peace, or we may end up in a worse situation with more aggressive azerbaijan which knows it has even more power, and gaining the remaining territories back in a short war is much more real for them. and in that scenario, would they stop by getting back artsakh by war (which is already a disaster, and means ~200.000 refugees plus a lot of deaths among both military and civilians, and everyone here would be sent to war, and we cannot handle all this), or they would go further by establishing a connection to nakhinchevan and cutting armenia from the iran. and in that case, would be armenia a country which can sustain it’s life, or that would just be the end of the state?
i always say, that feeling the situation on the ground is very important. going to artsakh and closer to the armenian borders, and seeing what is happening there is very important. driving by the road close to the border and knowing you can be shot at any moment is very important. watching the mountains and identifying who controls which one is very important. that brings you down to earth, to the reality. so freed lapshin also brings many to the reality, because he just experienced the azerbaijani reality, where one of the faults he had to pay for, he was ‘guilty’ for was calling artsakh by it’s armenian name, ‘artsakh’. that alone cannot be tolerated there. while that’s completely normal thing even in case of not political, but merely geographic entities - same places, rivers, mountains are called differently in different languages.
so Lapshin is free.
In a separate Facebook post, the blogger reflected on the Karabakh conflict and made an emotional appeal to Armenians.
“I am ashamed of admitting that before I found myself in the Azerbaijani prison I sincerely believed that the Karabakh conflict is a very disputed one and should be resolved on the basis of respect for Azerbaijan’s national borders,” he wrote. “What an idiot I was! let me complain about life. i believe that’s okay to complain. may be that even has genetic base. there was a research which showed that some people, who have some genetic pattern, love to complain to friends. but that’s in usa, in korea, where complaining is considered bad, nobody does that.
so i believe it’s ok to complain. what alternative do we have? you go to instagram and you see that everybody is happy. there are couples (have have resistance for those photos, never feel bad because i know they are not as happy as they show), and there are companies, friend photos, community photos. on the opposite, armenian twitter community is rather complaining. because as i understand those are people who don’t fit in this or that way, and are refugees from facebook, of course to the known, and not isolated from the world place - twitter. not diaspora.
so to me twitter is a very nice place. i can feel connection to the local community. i don’t follow anyone interesting from the outside world - i have interesting people here. and for celebrities, well, IT celebrities, I don’t follow them on twitter, though I would like to, because I cannot handle and digest big streams. I just cannot.
and the twitter here is the place for losers, for “refugees”. and i believe that’s ok to be a loser, and accept it, and live with it. so i perceive that community as community of complaining losers, and i guess that’s much more healthy environment than the happy instagram. first of all, because the happiness is not true. especially theirs. secondly, because we see that everybody around have problems, and everybody struggling, and everybody is unhappy, and that’s okay. it’s not only you, the loser, we all are.
thus the popular tags or meme replies on the twitter armenian community are “always”, “as well”, those that confirm that everyone has the same unhappiness. and by using those as memes people make fun of themselves.
so my today’s complain is - i hate my pidgin. i hate to turn it on every day to know i won’t chat with anybody. even the IRC communities i am part of, the most interesting to me, are rather silent, because nothing, no life is going on there.
i love tbilisi because of the life. not sweet, sometimes really tough, but there’s life. something is going on. armenia is a really sad place, because it is separated from the world. now also by the curtain of the “eurasian union”. we’ve got two guests in may, for the conference, so one of them was from russia, one from europe. on the road from the airport, the russian one panicked - ‘why don’t you have anything written in russian?’, and the european one said “why do you use so many latin inscriptions, if you have own letters?’. i have answered - i guess because we want to feel ourselves the part of the world. desperately.

apparently, the good style when programming PLC’s or even microcontrollers, is to not write to the ports directly from different functions, but set flags, then have only one function, which looks at the flags and sets ports.
i’ve seen the schneider’s development environment, and apparently you cannot copy the code, let’s say to compare (diff) it in the third party tool. you do everything in one, sluggish, big, slow IDE, not only the code development, but also you write to the device, you read from the device, you configure connection settings, everything.
just the opposite of unix philosophy - do everything, and do it bad.
i guess that’s because most of the developers who use schneider products are electrical engineers, otherwise if they would be programmers, then by being acquainted with the cool development tools and culture, they would not tolerate such a product.

so i had an experience with expired (in 1991) fujichrome 50, and all the shots look overexposed by one-twe stops. after some research i found out that:
Negative films fog darker with age (or temperature), as grains get thermally, chemically, or cosmic ray exposed. Negative films have a large exposure latitude, so you can increase exposure to get above the fog.
Reversal films fog lighter with age. That is why photos may look overexposed. But they don’t have the large exposure latitude, so you can’t increase exposure to get above the fog. You are squeezed between fog and the top of the curve.

i have a guess that there is a correlation between being socially active, like to socialize, and not being aggressive.
it may even have an evolutionary explanation. it looks like there is a connection between us being less aggressive and us being juvenal creatures - animals that look like kids when adult.
also, who likes to communicate and socialize more - kids, they need it.
so, i guess those of us who like to socialize more are likely to be less aggressive.
well i have an impression that in the armenian twitter community there are sort of, sometimes even infantile people, very liberal, accepting differences and each other, they are chatting there being far from the eyes of the “everybody”, who in armenia are of course on facebook.
also many of them don’t use their real names on twitter in order to not be found by those relatives or coworkers/costudents who would not understand them.
so my impression is that in armenian twitter community there are mostly very liberal, open minded people.
who comes to the armenian diaspora community? i don’t really know, it’s so small, i probably cannot speculate about that. yes of course i know that i speculate. (:
so i don’t understand. i guess part of us are people who value some ideas, the old core, and the newcomers are usually those who are willing to communicate but don’t always have proper skills for that, because they lack experience. also when they come, they see that they are pretty much alone, and it’s possible to get some kind of feedback elsewhere, and go there. they could of course change the language, but most of them would prefer to express themselves in a wave, without thinking is the sentence grammatically correct. this will help me to communicate, i hope. may be i needed to remove more people, in order to make the stream maintainable and then only start adding from scratch, from zero. so when you get a message that i followed you, it’s not that i did unfollow long ago in the past, it’s because i indeed followed you. if i don’t follow you, then i will, if we have some kind of connection. i want to make this diaspora useful, and indeed to be able to follow those i know, well i know on the internet, as people i’d like to socialize with, and not get a huge stream, when i never notice those whom i want to talk to.
and i’ll try to comment you. it’s hard. i need to convince myself to comment, when i know, i will say something stupid. just because the stupid comment will create a connection.

many things we learn are about culture. the culture is not less important than the actual ‘knowledge’. let’s say you write a program. you may write it in hundreds of ways, but when you have a culture of unix programming, you may prefer to make it usable with pipeline. that’s not about programming, purely, that’s about the culture. or may be you have the culture to write a markdown, or you know the wiki syntax. that’s about the culture, and having the culture is as important as other skills.
and i am very much frustrated, that when somebody around has culture, it’s not close to the culture i have adopted. well i have chosen my culture, so i have chosen to not be understood. but it’s not on purpose. it’s just the way it is.
i sometimes notice that i differ. when i communicate. during the barcamp meeting someone sent me an attachment, and i’ve received it, saved with alpine, and a girl sitting next to me said something like ‘i swear by my mother’s name!’ and i realized she experienced some cultural shock, and then i noticed that i am different.
however, it’s not a pleasurable feeling, to be different always. i would prefer not to. i would prefer many people with similar culture around, so that i would feel better understood, and i would have more fun socializing. something like that. aha. #culture

by the way, you don’t get that it is not really fare that palestine gets a lot of attention, but artsakh(nagorno-karabakh) problem does not, and those who managed to not be expelled or killed, are now considered occupants just because they were able to stay alive and not become refugees. if they would become refugees, the international community, and people like you would say that “it’s very sad”, but now, when these people, well some of them, managed to live with dignity already more than 20 years, well, by paying with lives of many, of course, but live where they used to, now some think that this gives them right to tell that “these barbarians are killing each other”, which is actually very imperialistic thinking, but clearly, these people would not live there if not the failure to expell them because of the armenian resistance. and armenia does not get sanctions from the international community, because everybody knows the truth - there would be no single armenian in artsakh, if they would not defend themselves. and yes, if we would not help them.
actually, i really understand the importance of not changing the borders. because that could kindle the war, and many could be killed. so i am the first, seriously, who thinks, that changing the borders even on post soviet space, where those borders were drawn by colonial administration without taking in consideration what’s “fair” but because of their short term political interests, let’s say good relationships of early bolsheviks with turkey, and trading armenian land (i mean the actual republic of armenia, not some historical, virtual land) for the port cities (batumi), so still i think that changing borders is a very bad idea. but! when there is a choice - you don’t change the borders, and people live peacefully, even discriminated, but in peace, then let’s keep borders, bad peace is better than war.
but when people anyway get exterminated, then you don’t have peace anyway. whether you fight, or you die/leave without it. and i mean really exterminated, not like in crimea, where nobody had a danger of being even expelled. (well now tatars and ukrainians have that danger). i am already used to participate discussions why crimea and artsakh cases are absolutely different, but that will be too much for you. anyway this post won’t get much attention.
and yes, this is very important to me and each and every armenian, not because those are armenians, or we dream of an expansion, or “armenia from sea to sea”, there are armenians in georgia, and guess what, they live, well, sometimes get discriminated, but still, nobody exterminates them, and such a surprise, nobody said that armenia occupied parts of georgia, right? while i know, that during the russian-georgian war russia tried to ignite armenian-georgian conflict. i cannot prove that, but military people who knew, told me, - so this is important to each of us not because of imperialism we cannot actually afford, but because anyone has a friend or relative in artsakh. just anyone. when you know someone, you feel their pain, and you can identify with them as well. they always were, and are a part of our society. they were coming to study to armenia, they were working here, and though soviet azerbaijan made everything that there would be no feasible physical connection - for instance no real road from artsakh to armenia, but it was impossible to cut the connections that way. and when you know your friend’s sister or brother is under the fire, it’s very influential, you cannot be indifferent. it does not matter that’s not your sister. that’s too close to not care deeply.
i strongly believe there are cases, when you need to pay, but stay with dignity. let’s say, you are in a country where you can be punished for what you say, no free speech. first they burn your car, then they put you to jail. or you go to the political rally, and they catch you. that does not mean that you don’t have to go to the rally. that means that when you want to live with dignity, it means, you go to the rally, and you know you can end up in jail. that’s what you have to pay. it’s inevitable. otherwise you don’t respect yourself. so to me this is similar. they tried to eliminate the population, first by the help of soviet army, then by themselves. they failed miserably. now they sold a lot of oil and have a lot of military power, got a lot of arms from our “strategic partner and alley” called russia, and the military budget of their country exceeds the whole budget of armenia. we already paid by the years of blockade, huge emigration, stagnating economics. but that’s the price, when you have hostages. and we have hostages there, in artsakh, actually. that’s not a pleasure. nobody feels that we are occupants, we feel that we have people who live under constant threat. and one year ago, during 4-6 days war, that got confirmed. azeri army entered the villages, they could manage to, and killed, cut years, the elderly people who could not leave. the whole rhetoric of their media was along the lines of “armenians run from karabakh, it’s our land”, and after that they want to use all their resources to make us leave artsakh alone, to get control over it by using international community and the law. well that’s very nice. so we do not feel occupants, we feel like someone who has close hostages would feel. i don’t even talk about people who live in other places near the border, not necessarily in artsakh. or actually any of us could go to war at any moment, we know that. we are not happy about that. just it is what it is.

so according to the internal light meter of my camera, yellow filter makes a difference in one stop, red filter - three stops, and polarizer - exactly two stops!
so i can use it to push while pushing iso 400 film to 1600. in the evening take out the polarizer, and shoot at 1600, in the afternoon, shoot with polarizer on by setting light meter to 400. unfortunately neither red nor yellow filters will work.
i wonder if two stops neutral density filter would suit this purpose of pushing better than my polarizer, it shouldn’t right? #photography

i feel a bit guilty that i don’t share texts with you recently. i write in the armenian stream but not here.
so let me tell you something which i did not write there because i have been written there the same in the other context.
i want to tell you why i feel reluctant to use instagram. years ago i wrote here (and if diaspora navigation would be better, here would be the link to that post) that i have many questions, in particular, is it ethical to post to instagram photos made with dslr or on film?
now i see that well that’s a standard behavior of many photographers. though there is an irony - photographers come to instagram because there is market - a lot of people, and a lot of people they know in person. on the other hand if i would be on instagram, i would follow the photographers, not the people i know. and if the stream would get bigger, i would not be able to follow everyone. i don’t even talk that i try to avoid saass, that’s okay, i would use it, it’s not the only saass i use after all.
but there’s another reason. the maintenance of instagram stream is too much of overhead for me. i find myself trying to avoid unnecessary overheads. to me updating funtoo is not an overhead. it’s a pleasure. as well as driving. if i would be rich i would not have a driver.
but putting photo to a phone ir order to upload to instagram, because instagram only allows to upload from it’s own software (i even don’t mention it’s proprietary, you see?), just the absence of the api to do so is a hustle. and i find myself saving movements. i feel humiliated by obeying those rules. every time i would do that i would feel humiliated.
i am trying to have less ovehread. i have jolla, so often when i have downloaded new track or an album, copying it to the phone takes seconds before getting out of home. i do scp that to the phone, and then while i take the backpack and get out, it’s already there.
but somehow instagram feels like unnecessary overhead i am just trying to keep me away from. #instagram #jolla #hosting

you use VAR because you want to get the pointer to the array, instead of copying the whole array to the procedure’s stack.
so the suggestion was that if you want to make sure the array won’t be modified, you use “-” mark.
what about optimizations, they say, that in principle compiler can understand that you did not write to the passed array, and instead of passing it to the procedure by value (by copying the whole array), pass it by reference (by copying only pointer to it).
i disagree, because i believe, it is important to mark your intentions. if you intent to make sure you pass it read-only, you pass it with “-”, if you intent to pass it read-write, you pass it just with VAR. passing with ‘OUT’, when you cannot read it, but can only write to it is not supported in Oberon.

Here’s a great example of the problems with having only a few red pixels from an outing a few years ago, comparing a Canon 5D Mark II with 4×5 Velvia. Obviously the 4×5 Velvia has more resolution but we downsampled it to match the 5D Mark II and got the following result (show at 200%)
On the right (the 4×5 image downscaled) we can see all of the berries on the tree but on the left (the Canon 5D Mark II image) a lot of the berries have disappeared. The only berries shown are where there were larger groups of them (i.e. a single pixel size berry is unlikely to match up with a single red pixel whereas a group of berries covering 2×2 sensor pixels will definitely hit a red filtered one).

This is not suprising, since the entire tonal palette for Kodachrome was based on rendering the skin tones as pleasingly as possible of those who would be its principal consumers: caucasians (hence Stalin looks less “caucasian” because he actually came from the Caucasus). “Color” is literally the colour of American consumerism. Japanese Fuji colour film followed the same imperative, but for Asians. Pinks and reds are the colours which “color” recognises and amplifies most dramatically, though sometimes the effect is akin to a mortician’s make-up: people occasionally appear as if they have been painted after death to give the illusion of life, which of course is, historically speaking, exactly what has happened.

I’ve discovered this flickr photographer recently, Tod Gross, most of his photos are daylight street photography, and we know that it’s hard to make daylight photos because of the shadows and high contrast. So I guess what he does, is he uses on camera flash in order to decrease a contrast of the picture. (it may sound counter intuitive, to use flash when it’s sunny, and not use it when it’s dark). there is even some evidence of that in the mirrors or sunglasses.
so i remember you asked if i used flash for one of my daylight photos and i said no. how would i use flash with film cameras? i never used it, but i happen to have a couple. one has some buttons on it, and one does not. so these cameras have sync? what does it mean? to fire the light at the ‘right’ moment? but what shutter/aperture values should i use then? do these flash units use standard light amount or those are different? there is X on one of my mamiyas which is fixed to 1/90 and serves for a shutter i guess. i’ve seached in the web, but i actually want to socialize, and to hear your opinion on that.

Tears of rage.
I had not visited Cinthia and Peter for a while. The day was sunny and they looked older, as if we hadn´t met for years, as if their faces were disappearing, getting away. They didn´t say a word about what happened to them. Maybe they were more silent. Maybe Peter smiled at me in a way more sweet. But I noticed that something was going wrong. They were doing so good lately! The farm was very clean and they were being taken care of by someone, a highly recommended nurse. But the other day I found their house all messy. Cinthia looked unkempt and one of the dogs is very sick and doesn´t move. I asked a neighbor who lives nearby, a true angel who watches them. She told me that she got a call from a worker of the bank office. He was worried. The nurse who was taking care of the old brother and her sister was driving Peter to the bank very often lately. Too much, he said. Peter signed papers, money was removed from the account every time. Peter will turn 90 years old in March and he is the youngest brother. This supposed nurse took advantage of a very old man´s trust and age. The neighbor checked everything and kicked her out. And now they are all alone and uncared of.
Tears of gratitude.
Knowing about what happened to them broke my heart a little bit, I guess. I couldn´t understand who is able to do something so mean! After the neighbor told me, I stayed in the farm a bit longer. Cinthia got a plate of old rice from the freezer and warmed it up. She also cut a few slices of chicken while Peter was getting the grill ready. I looked at them, they were so beautiful! There’s no one in this world, no thing in this world, that can change them now. There´s not a betrayal able to disturb a long life of kindness and trust in its end. The peace of their faces was a revelation suddenly, shining as an everlasting sunny day.

once i have found a definition of an ethnicity which i like: people who share common existence. by living in Armenia we share the same politicians, the same blockade, same prices, same political and economical situation, same fears, same teachers in the universities, same roads, and same little joys.
thus i think repatriation, or not emigrating is an act of solidarity with the others, like not using the hood under the rain, if you know your friend does not have one.
since i was a child i did not think about an ethnicity as of something which is connected to the genes. and genetically we all are homo sapiens, that’s pretty obvious.

I was watching a video about someone’s camera collection, and I recognized a thought I had many years.
The tool is a very important thing. It is complete, because it has a purpose and it can serve it.
The camera can make photos. Someone may use it to make “art”, someone to document something, someone to play. It absolutely does not matter.
The camera can make photos and that’s it. The qualities and properties and purposes of those photos are not important. The camera is complete because it is a tool that can make something.
And I love making tools. Making photos is a nice game to play, but you never know if your photo has any value. But the camera always has value because it is a tool that can serve to make photos. It’s purpose is not creating this or that kind of photos, good or bad, artistic or random snapshots. It’s purpose is to make sure the film or the sensor have been exposed to the light for the necessary time. That’s it. And by that it is complete. So creating a tool has sense, and creating it is motivating.
When you create something with the tool, let it be the hammer, and you create a chair, you never know if your chair is any good. But the hammer is important.
So I think that I love making tools. I want to make tools.
Human existence is overwhelmingly sad. It does not matter what choice do I make. Anyway the life is sad. And making choices in order to “improve” life sounds funny to me. Me feeling a bit more or less good or not so much, is so unimportant. So by making the choice why would I consider that? People who are so concerned about their well being are so funny. They are ready to fight, they get angry or sad because they did not get something, because they feel something is not fair, or because they don’t care what is fair. And in any case everything is so unimportant.
May be it’s better that we can be sad. It’s better than being a bunch of self obsessed violent monkeys, who would never get sad because of what they or other violent stupid monkeys do.
May be it’s better to understand how spoiled is everything and be sad, rather than feel good.
Vegetarians say, that by not eating meat we vote, contribute to the existence of less animals, therefore less animals are suffering. Not only when they die, they suffer when they live.
So by following that logic, if we don’t want to contribute to human suffering, we can vote for that by not propagating. If you don’t have kids, they won’t experience this overwhelming sadness.
if there are no humans, they don’t exist and they don’t suffer. humans are suffering creatures.
Adams was writing that some ask if getting out of oceans was a good idea? Yes, life in the ocean is easier and less painful.
But still, I don’t get it. Is it better to be a dolphin than a human? Because of dolphin’s experience? But it’s not important. Experience is not important. Just someone got more or less lucky with the way of life at some time frame.
Then is it better to be a hydra than to be a human? Is it better to have a brain? Is it better to be a stupid human? Why life happens, and is it good, that there are some animals that live and die, nobody knows why. Then does it matter what language we speak? Does anything that ever seemed significant or important to me really matter? And what matters? And what’s really? What’s important?
I don’t know why do I write this, and what’s the sense of getting to this after what i’ve been written above. I want to tell you that I feel so much pain when I return to Armenia. It is so insignificant, of course. Why would my feelings be important?
There are gorgeous mountains and gorges. Breathtaking landscapes. Beautiful houses. With dark winodws. Roofs with the holes. Empty houses. Nodoby lives there. You can see that almost nobody lives there. It is such a lonely place. The owner of the flat in Georgia described his life “I live in a God’s gifted country and city”. Then I would say I live in a god’s forgotten country. Some place nobody wants to look at it, because it’s so sad. Easier to forget that it exists. Get rid of it. Hide it under the carpet. Get out of it. Never remember.
I don’t know why do I love life. It’s amusing. It’s cute. I want to photograph it. And I want to make tools for someone. Because tools are usable. What they do with the tool - I don’t know. But the tool itself is an important thing. This was a reprise. Take care.

so, garbage collector is a good solution when you have two threads, or two programs that use shared memory, and you need to free memory automatically. it is very hard to do that in other ways (let’s say with smart pointers). which is obvious, one process does not know how the other behaves.
on safety. wow, in rust you have no null pointer. and you cannot dereference it therefore.

i have learned an interesting way of developing b/w film.
first of all, you don’t need to buy a developer, like d76 or rodinal. you can make a better developer yourself. (:
for that you need: solution number zero:
Dilute this in one litre of water.
solution number one:
Keep the film for 7 minutes in the first solution, then 7 minutes in the second solution. if you feel you need more details in shadows, then keep up to 15 minutes for the second time.
what is important, and what distinguishes this process, from d76 is that you never can “spoil” the negative. whatever ISO is it, however long you keep the film in the fluids, it will “expose” what is on the film, but it won’t go beyond that. I even got to know how does that work chemically, but i cannot explain that myself.
this solution is also known as Kodak D23, or “hungry development”.
By the way, you don’t need to buy a “Stop bath” solution as well. Just get %5 solution of Acetic Acid and dilute it in one litre of water. That’s your stop bath. (:

since pretty long ago i don’t feel comfortable telling others about my sad life, about how unfair somebody treated me, etc.
because whenever someone tells me, how unfair they have been treated, or even left/dumped by someone, what I think is, well, may be it’s not them who haven’t been good friend to you, or haven’t been loyal, may be you are the one, who haven’t been a good friend at the first place, and that’s why it happened?
this does not mean, that i have always been treated as i deserve. it does not mean that people have to stay in relationships, if they believe they haven’t been treated as they deserve. this rather means, that may be the “negative feedback” is not always necessary. and that if i tell someone, that somebody haven’t been fair to me, then that listener has a right to raise a question, very understandable, though may be silent, if it isn’t me, who are responsible for that?
i also believe that indeed, i have “earned” most of the treatment, which i have got from others, and i am not happy about.
and today i am very thankful for all the obstacles, “misfortunes”, and the chains of pain i have got, because if it taught me something, may be it made me a better person. for instance, it taught me that if i feel hurt by something, it is not necessary to hurt back. and it is better to try hard to keep staying calm in any situation.

theoretically the word “entrance” in russian has to be written as “подъезд”, not “под’езд”. this practice to use the apostrophe sign instead of the letter have been widely used back in 20ies, when bolsheviks were enforcing new orphography. armed people in loose-fitting uniform jackets and armed with mausers were confiscating the letters used in old orphography from printing houses, among them this “hard sign” letters. that is why people were using apostrophe signs instead of them.

The M-3 could have also remained a one-of-a-kind machine (its development was not officially sanctioned by the government), had it not been for the academician Viktor Amazaspovich Ambartsumian. Upon his arrival in Moscow in 1954, he asked his friend Andronick Gevondovich Iosifian, Director of the All-Union Soviet Scientific Research Institute of Electro-mechanics [today the Vserossiskii nauchno-isledovatel’skii institut elektromekhaniki, or VNIIEM], to help him obtain a computer for the Armenian Academy of Sciences. Iosifian turned to Brook, and the two of them agreed to manufacture three M-3s at the Institute of Electro-mechanics, which had its own manufacturing facility. One computer was to be built for the Institute of Electro Mechanics, one for the Yerevan Institute of Mathematics of the Armenian Academy of Sciences, and another for Korolev’s space program. They formed a joint group of specialists: Matyuhin (from Brook’s laboratory), Boris Moiseevich Kagan, George Petrovich Lopato (from Iosifian’s Institute), and others. In 1956, the first of the M-3’s was fine-tuned and presented to the State Commission, together with technical documentation required for industrial mass- production.
…Because the M-3 was actually a self-initiated project, independent of any state plans, the State Commission headed by Bruevich and assisted by Shura-Bura showed its true character by not wanting to acknowledge this computer, claiming that it was “born illegitimately.” Although they did eventually accept it, two years went by without it’s going into mass production. During this time, the Yerevan Institute of Mathematical Machines was founded and began producing its own computers using our documentation for the M-3. 27 At the same time, the first industrial computer factory in Minsk, Belarus, was built, but had nothing to produce. The factory managers learned that Iosifian had a model of a computer but nobody had given him permission to make it. Only then were the M-3’s documents transferred from the Institute of Electro Mechanics to the factory in Minsk and the M-3 computer became the basis for computer manufacturing in Yerevan and Minsk.

I have met a family in one of the Armenian towns.
They both are educated.
The wife works as a teacher at the local school. The husband, however, decided to become a farmer. That was an efficient way to support the family. All the day long he works at the farm, and she, after the school, makes cheese and matsun, which they distribute to sell at the town shops.
When he was a teenager, he was an M. C. Hammer fan. He said he had to go to Tbilisi to get shoes like those Hammer had. Also, they did not have any interesting clothes, so they were asking tailors to make custom clothes for them.
They are able to support a rented apartment for their kids, who study in Yerevan. One of them was able to get and keep a free education at the medical university, which is very hard. They say, that according to the other brother, this guy only studies and sleeps. Another brother, however, who had chosen the IT way, has more free time usually and enjoys the city life.
The wife dreams of having a room with bookshelves, but they send all the money to the kids. “It has to wait” - she said.
We, of course, also talked about coming elections. She said how the teachers have been forced to go to “stand” at the faked rally when the current “prime minister”, from the ruling party came to the city.
She also said she wonder how some people can engage in such a dirty thing to do, as distributing ads of one of the parties. They get paid around $100 for that. “Well, some people have no choice” - argued her husband. “There are more important things, I would do anything, any kind of hard work, but I would never distribute those papers” - she said.
She said - “they’ll never get our voices. they’ll never win in our town. whichever falsifications they do, they won’t win.”. “It’s you, your town, who give them voices, where they are able to fake” - she condemned me. (:
She said that one of the kids - the one who studies to become a physician, already decided to emigrate. He has a feeling that the corruption in the field is huge and he’s not gonna fit the system.
The other one can see how he can live in Armenia. He’s a programmer and he hopes to find a decent job, or maybe, found a startup here.
Everything in the house had been built by them. The husband built the furniture, the walls. The walls are still naked concrete. I have noticed that the walls are built very well, very accurate. I’ve seen different walls and I believe I can notice and appreciate a good work.
Her sister sends her books from Yerevan. She showed me books she reads currently - one of them was an Armenian translation of Hermann Hesse. She is proud that she can convince the pupils to read. She said recently she found out one of them have read “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde, by following her advice.
There is no bookshop in their town, she said. Though recently one had been opened, but it only sells books in Russian. “I am not reading Russian fast” - she confessed.
Overall, they both left an impression of advanced, smart people in very hard circumstances, but who still can find their way to live with dignity, and without betraying their values.
When you stand in front of someone (with your car) and you horn at that person, … In my opinion, it’s like pointing a loaded gun. It is a threat. One you probably wouldn’t execute, but that is also one of the biggest uses op weapons: threaten. The victim never knows for sure what you are going to do…
