The biggest impediment of rPi is that it is available from only one place due to Broadcomm hold on the processor and the personal union between Broadcom and the rPi Foundation (both run by the same person). Broadcomm has killed the competing rPi clones by simply refusing to sell the CPUs to the independent developers. Even if Broadcomm changed this policy (which I have not heard of), you simply cannot trust the chip vendor with this track record.
IMHO, investing any effort into rPi is a dead alley if you have any plans of “selling these boards to rural Africa”. Simply put, you are at the mercy of a single source who has a track record of using dirty practices against the competition. This is contrary to the idea of open design.
I am currently working on a BeagleBone which I selected precisely because I can buy the processor chips from Texas Instruments who has never refused to sell their chips to anyone. I am not impressed with performance, quad core or whatever. My only concern is whether I can build what I design, and then “sell to rural Africa”. Therefore, the rPi is completely ruled out forever.

#MagPi possibly will publish #article series about #Ada #programming. Get the first #lesson here #raspberrypi #raspberry-pi
when I read about new cool project built with #raspberry-pi I think - okay - they didn’t do any low level #programming. They used #python, and they have all those #drivers ready to use. If it is considered a tool for #children - then what will they learn, they couldn’t learn by using a #GNU/Linux pc?
That’s why when I read about cheap #Linux boards I afraid that #8bit #microcontrollers won’t be used and thus less and less people would tinker with low level staff. And if they don’t deal with it, they don’t have deep understanding of how it works.
That’s why I appreciate #Arduino, and I hope it won’t be ousted from #market. Actually, that language and #compiler which comes with Arduino is too lame. I never programmed #AVR with that language, I used gcc, and thus Arduino + #gcc is a good #toy for a child. I agree. But I am not so sure about #raspberrypi
What I would like to see and have - a #Raspberry-Pi device with screen, wifi adapter and 3d printed case. That would be a nice and cheap platform for development of free mobile technologies. As a start point, we may port there #mer, (#meego) #nemomobile, #shr, #qtmoko.
And not having a #gsm module may be advantageous - we may start to communicate with each other more via #jabber #xmpp by using encription and our own servers, whether by doing voice and video calls via #internet or by writing chat messages and emails instead of expensive and overpriced sms messages.
After all, we do not need #carriers, we need just #wireless #internet providers who provide the connection anonymously. In this case even gsm, #lte, or #3g could be used.
