some carriers provide internet plans only for tablets.
i tried such a sim card in several devices - it did not connect. checked the apn on the tablet where it works. same.
as i understand the carrier only sees the imei, is there a way to find out if the device is a tablet or phone via imei number?

still, so i tried to configure mod_firewall and it wasn’t that easy, i just blocked everything. (: then i used the block-spam.pfw script from the mod_firewall, and tried to send me a message from other server’s users that is not in my roster. did not help.

For example, the recent standardisation of DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) pitted advocates for dissidents and protestors against network operators who use DNS for centralised network management, and child safety advocates who promote DNS-based filtering solutions. If the IETF were to only decide upon technical merit, how would it balance these interests?

this answer to @{Dennis Schubert; denschub@pod.geraspora.de} post seems reasonable.
it is indeed seems possible to map some subset of activitypub to the current diaspora functionality.
moreover that ruby libraries for ap already exists, there needs to be work done on integration, which is not easy, of course, but i think necessary - because otherwise diaspora stays isolated from the rest of federated world.
i think we have to try to create a social demand for this. if there is a demand, these functionality is more likely to be implemented - whether by diaspora team or by the fork.
well, the main problem is, that we have lack of developers, which is because diaspora is not that popular, and it is already a miracle that we have diaspora, and we have the existing team.

today’s internet is not decentralized, but multipolar. it has many centers.
it becomes something, which it would become, if there would be no arpanet with it’s decentralized design. it becomes something, which it would become, if usa would not contribute years of research to the public.
there was minitel. if someone remembers it. there were different online boards.

Indeed, cannibalizing a federated application-layer protocol into a centralized service is almost a sure recipe for a successful consumer product today. It’s what Slack did with IRC, what Facebook did with email, and what WhatsApp has done with XMPP. In each case, the federated service is stuck in time, while the centralized service is able to iterate into the modern world and beyond.

yesterday at the kitchen one of the developers was remembering the time before cellular phones. he said — That girl told me “I’ll call you from 7 to 7.30 pm” and that implied that I had to be at home, which was a regular story, and then, if someone else locks the resource, while you’re expecting a call, you could not resist and ask “for how long do you intent to talk?”.
That is amazing. I do not remember anybody to tell me “I’ll call you at this time”, or I do not remember to use the phone more than for a 30 secs to agree on something, or to ask about homework, if I missed the class.
Well, I remember I locked a line for hours to download software or music, or to prepare my first stupid web sites(with first stupid experiments with js and java applets), or to read forums about digital video and sites about dogs, I was passionately interested at that time, and surprisingly my parents did not ask for a line, probably because my mother was happy nobody would call her, and my father was never at home.
I was trying to chat, but my computer’s soft modem would hang up, if I would use more resources than the system could afford, so I preferred to not, but concentrate on “important” (as it seemed that time) things.
p. s. well, no, I could not use web chats - that was heavy, but i’ve used cyberspace.org and hobbiton.org to chat by console icq clients.

amos oz was saying that Hebrews were stunned with the force they posses now, and never had before. this reminds about the compensation theory that those from Russia or Arab countries who recently became wealthy or well-to-do, often compensate former asperity and lack of opportunities.
by transferring the compensation theory to the internet, I think, that many of us today are stunned with the opportunity that many acquaintances and even strangers may read what they transmit, and even like it. Which can be roughly estimated as the likes count.
it is of course a natural need for humans to be accepted in the community, and to feel a bit of self importance. probably, those, who were devoid of those, are more obsessed with showing off in the “internets”, as Bush put it.
thus, like the Hebrews are compulsive to use force, like New Russians must use golden lavatories, we write online, and count what god sent us today likes, instead of aiming for deeper interpersonal relationships.
which has it’s opposite side: consuming this astonishing amount of information simply is not easy/possible, thus we learn to swallow it fast, without chewing, in vain hope of not missing out.
that’s the vicious circle of the beginning of the internet age, which is hard to escape.

decentralization matters to the regular user: it is very much exhausting to keep several identities and keep them synced. on this site for these people and on that site for those friends. like we aren’t on a one global network, but several not connected worlds.
we had to underestimate what may internet become, and invent rss/openid much earlier, this had to be the foundation of internet, just like smtp was. may be rss/openid is not enough.
even if one chooses photo hosting service, she could choose one, and follow friends on the other services, because all services would provide generic interfaces to exchange the data. and that would lead us to the real competition - where every service has equal opportunities, but must work hard on be a better service.
because otherwise the user will get it’s data and move to other service! and this is what i call a true competition.
now we already lost this. :/ may be something new, in addition or instead of rss/openid will make a change. some new technology, which will define interfaces for data exchange.

Social media have provided instrumental means of communication in many recent political protests. The efficiency of online networks in disseminating timely information has been praised by many commentators; at the same time, users are often derided as “slacktivists” because of the shallow commitment involved in clicking a forwarding button. Here we consider the role of these peripheral online participants, the immense majority of users who surround the small epicenter of protests, representing layers of diminishing online activity around the committed minority. We analyze three datasets tracking protest communication in different languages and political contexts through the social media platform Twitter and employ a network decomposition technique to examine their hierarchical structure. We provide consistent evidence that peripheral participants are critical in increasing the reach of protest messages and generating online content at levels that are comparable to core participants. Although committed minorities may constitute the heart of protest movements, our results suggest that their success in maximizing the number of online citizens exposed to protest messages depends, at least in part, on activating the critical periphery. Peripheral users are less active on a per capita basis, but their power lies in their numbers: their aggregate contribution to the spread of protest messages is comparable in magnitude to that of core participants. An analysis of two other datasets unrelated to mass protests strengthens our interpretation that core-periphery dynamics are characteristically important in the context of collective action events. Theoretical models of diffusion in social networks would benefit from increased attention to the role of peripheral nodes in the propagation of information and behavior.

I was discussing something with a friend recently: She said that we leave too many trails and footsteps on the internet, here and there, and we don’t think enough what it will look like to next generations, to our children. Her point was that when generation Z’s kids will become teenagers or adults and will discover our footsteps, then society will rethink many things about it’s behaviour on the net. And that next generations won’t share, at least publicly many things generations before them did. They won’t reveal intimate, personal stuff or won’t do it to such extent.
Well, I think there’s another option: next generations, and we all, will become more sincere, more tolerant, and less reticent. Of course being sincere and showing your underwear are different things. This is culture we may have to learn. However I believe we’ll accept people as they are more than today. We’ll accept that yes, people have many weaknesses, foibles and shortcomings. People behave stupid, say stupid things. People feel bad. People get frustrated. People are jealous and jaundice. People lie. People fake themselves. People are self destructive. They know it’s better to not behave somehow but they behave like that. People are not always fair, say true things, or bring up rational arguments. This is it. We are like that.
And I believe we have an option to learn to accept ourselves as we are, and to be more tolerant to ourselves. To be relaxed and more sincere in public, because people around won’t form bad opinion, make fun of us, and label us. Because we all are weak, have shortcomings, and are not ideal. That’s our chance to be closer to ourselves. This also means - to show off less by faking ourselves, and show off more by who we really are.

Let’s call things by their names — and stop saying “Users” when we mean “Citizens”!
First of all, it frames the discussion in a very convenient way for the other side. When we’re talking about users, we’re talking about people with contracts signed with companies, or about people consuming cultural works one way or the other. In other words, from square one we seemingly agree to play on the “business turf”, and on their terms.
Then there’s the problem that things that look beneficial for users can be unacceptable for citizens. For example lowering the fee by an ISP if the user agrees to use only certain web services (vide the whole Net Neutrality debacle). This might look like a good deal for a user, but a citizen should be able to see that it’s dangerous for free speech, among others.
And finally — and most importantly — rights and freedoms that we defend are citizen’s, not user’s. We should not be ashamed to call upon them if we’re supposed to defend them! And seemingly all other sides to this dispute (and many beside it) have to be reminded, over and over again, that people are citizens first and foremost; they can be users afterwards.

this galore of information we have, these unlimited amount of options to read something on the internet leads us to want to not loose each and every option. because people are naturally curious. but it’s technically not possible. we feel it, thus we read, perceive superficially. we learn to read many small articles, instead of fat books, then we learn to read small twitter statuses instead of blog posts and articles. add to these various notifications which prod us from different sides.
knowledge, work and development require deep concentration, and not being constantly distracted by notifications and status updates. i myself read less books than before. i myself notice this tempting desire to refresh the feed, instead of concentrating on my project. project requires concentration and a lot of thinking, and environment requires fast context switches between different sources, which drains brain power very fast.
i have no solution for this. may be accept that i’ll loose information. read one article of every ten i want to, read it slow and thoroughly, without hurry, fully perceiving one, not many. chew well one thing, not swallow many things. they cannot be digested after all. i don’t know.

ensure that Internet access is maintained at all times, including during times of political unrest.
Well, I would like to add that you also have a right to not access the Internet. Especially if Internet for you is limited by Facebook, where online anonymity is not respected.
Nobody will punish you, fine you, or pursue you for that. May be some people will be offended, but, most likely, no one will notice your absence.

If there is a resource connected to your gmail.com account called something similar to “MessagingXXXXXXX”, that’s the ‘new’ Google Hangouts (the one that doesn’t play nicely with XMPP). And quite possibly it’s the Android application for Google Hangouts.
So yes, Google Hangouts stays connected even if the device you’ve logged into from is not. Apparently this is a connection that’s created internally, inside Google, from their Hangouts service to their Talk service — from the new IM tech to the XMPP tech. And if you try to trick the XMPP service to sign out Hangouts (for example, by creating a new connection with identical XMPP resource), the Hangouts will happily log back into XMPP in your name and present you as ‘away’. And messages intended to be stored offline will end up in Hangouts, never to be seen again unless you use Hangouts on other systems.

Social Media and the ‘Spiral of Silence’
A major insight into human behavior from pre-internet era studies of communication is the tendency of people not to speak up about policy issues in public—or among their family, friends, and work colleagues—when they believe their own point of view is not widely shared. This tendency is called the “spiral of silence.”

Probably, my main problem with many saas services, including facebook, is that they quietly substitute ideas of technology with exact services. The verb “to google” is a perfect example, because we all know that web search is not limited to google.
Companies like facebook and twitter avoid using standard technologies, so that people think of services provided by company, forgetting that Internet is a network, and it’s about technologies, not companies. It’s a space where anyone can create a service, by using common underlying and free for all technologies.
That’s why saas avoids usage of rss, for example. That’s why there is a question “what’s your name on skype?” instead of “what’s your chat id?”, as we do with email.

I do tend to know this industry. And I was the first to tell you, on this blog, that Nokia’s handset business just died. I told you when it happend, and more importantly, I told you why it died. I was searching who was the author of this photo https://spyurk.am/posts/2587 https://joindiaspora.com/posts/1996816 https://diasp.org/posts/1394284 links point to the same post as seen from different nodes. And eventually I found it at #moma website. Indeed, I have been written the names of the photographers, and I have been written the name of #Helen-Levitt. However while searching in the #internet for her photos I did not find this one and assumed that this is not her photo and I forgot to write down the name of the author. So now I found it at the MoMA site and now I know that this is a photo by Helen #Levitt. And actually I could have understand it by myself, from the style. #photography #NY #New-York #moma #woman #bus #ֆոտո #ՆՅ #Նյու֊Յորք #Լեվիտ #Հելեն֊Լեվիտ #մոմա #կին #ավտոբուս

today I have subscribed to the #gif tag. That’s why I decided to show off contribute something with this tag in D* myself too. So this is my first gif ever made, back in #2000 for my #freenet.am page dedicated to the #ELP or #Emerson-Lake-and-Palmer music. Some time later I lost it, and found somewhere in the #Internet, someone else was using it in his elp page. I noticed that I felt no anger. On the contrary, I was happy, that someone used it. (:
I actually don’t like when people show off with old work, that may mean that they don’t do anything new. Then they need new people to continue to show off. However I do believe my motives to do work are different.

It was an actively #creative #society. Then the #Internet happened and everything got put on hold for a #generation.
http://blogs.hbr.org/fox/2012/04/low-innovation-internet-era.html I don’t agree. I believe those who are not interested and don’t become expert in something, they just don’t, inspite of #internet existence. If they wouldn’t have internet, they would go to pub, or watch tv. Does not matter. And those who are interested in something will find Internet very useful as a universal knowledge database, as a communication means, etc. And it will influence their development because in pre-internet era there were no such resource - I cannot imagine how did we live without it. Of course I remember, I mean - it was not really cool. But now I’ve read many books just because search brought me those. I wouldn’t know authors, or it would be hard to find that book in local markets, but now I just have read them. So I believe Internet makes society more developed, and nice people have more opportunities.
#Copyright Alert System Coming Within Weeks
American #Internet users can expect to start seeing notifications from their Internet service providers if they trade files on #peer-to-peer networks. http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/legal-and-management/copyright-alert-system-coming-within-weeks-1007986052.story #p2p #freedom
What I would like to see and have - a #Raspberry-Pi device with screen, wifi adapter and 3d printed case. That would be a nice and cheap platform for development of free mobile technologies. As a start point, we may port there #mer, (#meego) #nemomobile, #shr, #qtmoko.
And not having a #gsm module may be advantageous - we may start to communicate with each other more via #jabber #xmpp by using encription and our own servers, whether by doing voice and video calls via #internet or by writing chat messages and emails instead of expensive and overpriced sms messages.
After all, we do not need #carriers, we need just #wireless #internet providers who provide the connection anonymously. In this case even gsm, #lte, or #3g could be used.
