in the following posts you’ll see our videos from the last trip to Lori, you’ll see #coaf - children of armenia building designed by Paul Kaloustian, 12th century Kobayr monastery which looked much cooler when they did not start the restoration work, and Odzun church and village. #walk #armenia #kobayr #odzun #friends
this is an amazing building, designed by paul kaloustian, i know him. it belongs to coaf - children of armenia, they have buses, which bring kids from the vicinity to classes - drawing, music, theatre, dances, yoga, programming, various natural languages. they also have a hotel, in that building, so staying in it helps the project. it is not expensive, but the location and design are amazing. the centre built with modernistic aesthetics in mind. in hotel you can see naked concrete walls. i like that very much. stayed there a couple of days ago, hostpitability was extra ordinary even by armenian norms.

one of my friends reminded me of this channel. i have actually been in the recording studio in Vanadzor, which you can see at the end of the video, and Lernapat is the village very close to Vanadzor, like almost a suburb. the guys visit villages, film the life there, talk to the people, and collect songs. then record those with the aesthetics close to them - they like rock.
i personally have mixed feelings, i am tired of rock, and i am not sure turning folk songs in to rock is good idea, but anyway - this will be interesting for you to watch and listen, i believe.

says: do you know who is the main promoter of armenia? it’s turkey. if not turkey, nobody would remember us. if not turkey, who time after time remembers and says something about armenia, that we are bad guys, or that there was never a genocide. thus someone living in island may think, stop, wait, which armenia, and try to find it on the map, which is indeed not easy.
continues: i would go further and claim, that turkey saved armenians. when turkey conducted genocide of armenians, armenians practically did not exist as nation. in turkey and russia they were forgetting how to speak armenian, and were speaking empire languages. there was no single party that would claim the independence of armenia is its goal. instead the goals were to make turkey or russia a better countries, so that equality for all, would mean also equality for armenians. the genocide is what forced armenians to face that they are different. because they are treated differently. the genocide was the reason for them to remember that they need security, army, borders. if not the genocide, most likely we would not have this armenia today. so thank you turkey, this nation would not exist, if not you. we would dissolve like every old nation does. we did not want to survive, but you were saying - hey armenians, comon, lets play war, hey you, defend yourself, take this weapon. yes, take the weapon, we are gonna play with you.

So, Samvel Martirosyan writes on telegram, that he spoke with Artsakh military and other gov people, and
a. The probability of new offensive (Azerbaijani, obviously), is extremely high now. b. Because now it is hard for them to be invisible while approaching our positions (we have cameras and drones), the easiest way to bring military to the border is conducting military exercises. And now Azerbaijan is conducting military exercises without a pause, and it looks like those are very expensive. c. The probability of war will be much higher after July 14, when the football championship will be over. Before that starting the war can offend the Russian side. By the same logic, now they almost don’t shoot at the borders. e. The offensive probably will start from the south, so that less people will be affected, to decrease response of international community.

by the way, you don’t get that it is not really fare that palestine gets a lot of attention, but artsakh(nagorno-karabakh) problem does not, and those who managed to not be expelled or killed, are now considered occupants just because they were able to stay alive and not become refugees. if they would become refugees, the international community, and people like you would say that “it’s very sad”, but now, when these people, well some of them, managed to live with dignity already more than 20 years, well, by paying with lives of many, of course, but live where they used to, now some think that this gives them right to tell that “these barbarians are killing each other”, which is actually very imperialistic thinking, but clearly, these people would not live there if not the failure to expell them because of the armenian resistance. and armenia does not get sanctions from the international community, because everybody knows the truth - there would be no single armenian in artsakh, if they would not defend themselves. and yes, if we would not help them.
actually, i really understand the importance of not changing the borders. because that could kindle the war, and many could be killed. so i am the first, seriously, who thinks, that changing the borders even on post soviet space, where those borders were drawn by colonial administration without taking in consideration what’s “fair” but because of their short term political interests, let’s say good relationships of early bolsheviks with turkey, and trading armenian land (i mean the actual republic of armenia, not some historical, virtual land) for the port cities (batumi), so still i think that changing borders is a very bad idea. but! when there is a choice - you don’t change the borders, and people live peacefully, even discriminated, but in peace, then let’s keep borders, bad peace is better than war.
but when people anyway get exterminated, then you don’t have peace anyway. whether you fight, or you die/leave without it. and i mean really exterminated, not like in crimea, where nobody had a danger of being even expelled. (well now tatars and ukrainians have that danger). i am already used to participate discussions why crimea and artsakh cases are absolutely different, but that will be too much for you. anyway this post won’t get much attention.
and yes, this is very important to me and each and every armenian, not because those are armenians, or we dream of an expansion, or “armenia from sea to sea”, there are armenians in georgia, and guess what, they live, well, sometimes get discriminated, but still, nobody exterminates them, and such a surprise, nobody said that armenia occupied parts of georgia, right? while i know, that during the russian-georgian war russia tried to ignite armenian-georgian conflict. i cannot prove that, but military people who knew, told me, - so this is important to each of us not because of imperialism we cannot actually afford, but because anyone has a friend or relative in artsakh. just anyone. when you know someone, you feel their pain, and you can identify with them as well. they always were, and are a part of our society. they were coming to study to armenia, they were working here, and though soviet azerbaijan made everything that there would be no feasible physical connection - for instance no real road from artsakh to armenia, but it was impossible to cut the connections that way. and when you know your friend’s sister or brother is under the fire, it’s very influential, you cannot be indifferent. it does not matter that’s not your sister. that’s too close to not care deeply.
i strongly believe there are cases, when you need to pay, but stay with dignity. let’s say, you are in a country where you can be punished for what you say, no free speech. first they burn your car, then they put you to jail. or you go to the political rally, and they catch you. that does not mean that you don’t have to go to the rally. that means that when you want to live with dignity, it means, you go to the rally, and you know you can end up in jail. that’s what you have to pay. it’s inevitable. otherwise you don’t respect yourself. so to me this is similar. they tried to eliminate the population, first by the help of soviet army, then by themselves. they failed miserably. now they sold a lot of oil and have a lot of military power, got a lot of arms from our “strategic partner and alley” called russia, and the military budget of their country exceeds the whole budget of armenia. we already paid by the years of blockade, huge emigration, stagnating economics. but that’s the price, when you have hostages. and we have hostages there, in artsakh, actually. that’s not a pleasure. nobody feels that we are occupants, we feel that we have people who live under constant threat. and one year ago, during 4-6 days war, that got confirmed. azeri army entered the villages, they could manage to, and killed, cut years, the elderly people who could not leave. the whole rhetoric of their media was along the lines of “armenians run from karabakh, it’s our land”, and after that they want to use all their resources to make us leave artsakh alone, to get control over it by using international community and the law. well that’s very nice. so we do not feel occupants, we feel like someone who has close hostages would feel. i don’t even talk about people who live in other places near the border, not necessarily in artsakh. or actually any of us could go to war at any moment, we know that. we are not happy about that. just it is what it is.

Despite the challenges it faces, Armenian civil society remains energetic and defiant. Armenia has its share of human rights problems, but so far has resisted making the sharp authoritarian turn seen elsewhere in Eurasia in recent years. This is due to the dynamic nature of Armenian civil society, the importance of a semi-open political system to competing oligarchic groups, and political elites’ understanding that such a turn would aggravate the West and some influential diaspora figures, which Yerevan sees as hedges against Russian geopolitical and economic domination.

My first thought was curiosity that he chose to go up and over, rather than going around. But then I wondered if I would have noticed him at all if he was just easily slinking underneath the metal fence like it was no big deal. Instead, I watched his entire journey until he was no longer visible on the other side of the wall, just as our hike was ready to depart.
It’s worth noting, perhaps, that this guy would have nearly filled the palm of my hand. I had never before seen (land) snails as large as those I saw in Armenia and Artsakh.

Four weeks into my stay in Armenia, I took a trip to Artsakh with a rambunctious busload of other diasporans. The entire time, I wished I could ditch the group and just explore on my own time. Learn about a history I had, up until that point, simply not known, much less understood. I wished I had more Armenian under my belt so I could take time to talk with the families we stayed with in Shushi, to listen to their stories, understand their pain, their strength.
The morning of our departure, after three jam-packed days of being bussed from place to place to place and back again, we were given the opportunity to go on an optional hike above Shushi, at 7:30am, with just a few hours sleep under our belts. Only nine of us showed up. And during the two hours that followed, we hiked quietly, nearly too tired to talk, up the hills above Shushi. The hills were rich with scads of fragrant, wild herbs. The rocks dropped off dramatically around each bend, giving way to the valley below. After days of rain, the sky was clear, the air crisp, and we stood on the edge of this valley, just taking it all in. The current moment, beautiful, peaceful, and quiet under a morning sun. But also the layers upon layers of history, trauma, fierce pride, reverence, and unwaivering resolve amongst those we met to do whatever it took to keep calling this breathtaking place home.

i have found these photos here. vachagan made them back in the winter 2014.
that was the next day after a car crash accident. in front of me there were two girls and one guy from azerbaidjan. vachagan was asking them about differences and similarities between azerbaidjani and turkish language. they said that formerly they were watching movies on tv or in cinema in russian, they were receiving films from russia. now they receive films from turkey, with turkish translations. she said, when the film comes to the end i realize that i didn’t even notice that it was in turkish, not in azerbaidjani.
we also asked them about the orthography. she answered that they’ve changed orthography 5 times - they were writing with arabic letters, then, during short independence in 1918-20 in latin letters, then cyrillic letters, then now again latin. she said “our president gave a promise that in two years all books will be reprinted with the new orthography”. “and, did they manage to reprint them?” - i have asked. “no” - she answered.
also she said very interesting and typical thing for someone from a country with authoritarian regime: she said she does not see any other good candidate rather than their ilham aliyev. she said “if not him - then who?”. well, isn’t it obvious that he did everything for you to think like that, my dear?
then they started to ask us about the language. they’ve said “we know there are eastern and western armenian languages. do you understand each other? how do you live in one small country and speak two languages?”
i have answered, that well, languages do not differ that much, and we perfectly understand each other, except for a couple of words that may have a bit different meaning. and i have added, that western armenian is spoken in the west only - in europe, usa, latin america. not in armenia as a rule.
and she asked naively - “why?” i hate mentioning the “genocide” word and the theme, so i remained silent for some time.
then the azerbaidjani guy who sat next to her, a guy in a shirt with some horizontal fur line on it, he smiled happily and started to whisper something in her ear. his face exprecced great satisfaction.
she said “ah, i understand”.

Armen T. Marsoobian offers us the unique lens of the Dildilian family of Armenian photographers in provincial Anatolia. Around the turn of the twentieth century, the Dildilians worked to memorialize portraits of fragmenting families and to document everyday scenes in provincial cities such as Sivas, Samsun, and Merzifon. Marsoobian, himself a descendant of the Dildilians, has woven together the family’s remarkable photographic archive along with their memoirs and oral histories, to describe how through ingenuity and professional connections, the family and with them much of their art survived the genocide in 1915-16.

By the way, Thursday I have been in the German parliament when the deputies finally passed a bill on recognising the Armenian genocide. Brilliant discussion, very good argumentation. The cool thing is that the government didn’t want this decision, but the parliament just did it. Merkel and her most important ministers didn’t attend the session, because they had promised to Erdogan not to vote in favour of the recognition.
Even the deputies with Turkish roots have voted in favour of the recognition. Unfortunately, they have a lot of problems now and are threatend by Turkish nationals. They even get murder threats now and Erdogan has personnaly called these deputies “terrorists”.

Would Israel sell a used drone to a Hitler?
Suppose the Nazis were not murdering Jews but were murdering ‘only’, say, Slavs, Gypsies, and Jehovah’s Witnesses; and suppose our beloved State of Israel were in existence: Would you agree to our selling arms to the Nazis?
Israel is reported to have sold billions of dollars worth of arms, including to governments that are killing or threatening to attack victim peoples. Last week there came reports that an Israeli drone in the hands of Azerbaijan – a huge arms customer of ours – was responsible for the deaths of six Armenians in the enclave Nagorno-Karabakh. And most recently Azeri military transport planes were reported to have landed in Israel (perhaps to pick up and deliver arms) during the war with Armenia.
I am ashamed.
The Armenians were the victims of a major genocide 100 years ago that has even been called the “Armenian Shoah” by some Israeli scholars, including from Bar Ilan University. A great deal of their national and cultural ethos continues to focus passionately on the memory of that genocide (does that sound familiar to us Jews?). For many years now, we Israelis – whether led by Labor or Likud – have insulted and hurt the Armenian people by failing to recognize their genocide officially and formally. Would we ourselves tolerate another government – say the US or England – refusing to recognize the Holocaust because of their realpolitik interest with the perpetrator government?
One senior Armenian official has written several of us in Israel to express his deep pain as well as indignation, not only at our government’s cowardly and self-serving denials of the Armenian Genocide, but also at our thick military trade alliance with the Azeris, a Turkic people who adhere to Turkey’s bizarre and fascist tradition of rewriting history and denying the Armenian Genocide.
I am reminded of the prophet Natan crying out to King David for an earlier though more delectable murderous act of self-interest, or Elijah remonstrating Ahab about his murderous larceny: It’s bad enough that you killed him, are you also taking a profit from the sordid affair? (In the Hebrew: “Haratazachta v’gam yarashta?”)
In general, how willing are we Israelis to strengthen our economy by lucrative arms sales? Of course, “everyone” in the world is doing it, but do we have to also? Have we given up the vision of Israel as a moral leader of peoples on this planet? Is this idea tiresome, naïve, and childlike in a madly destructive and self-destroying world?
An alternative principle could be that we build arms first and foremost for the defense of Israel, and that we supply arms only to underdog peoples who are facing mass destruction and to allies like the US that are essentially committed to shared democratic values and to peace. Of course we will still make some mistakes, but at least our conscience will be more clear that we have not delivered arms to the ‘Nazis.’
To my Armenian colleagues and friends, I can only say that as a Jew and as an Israeli, I am mortified – and angry.

today is a conventional date of the beginning of the 1915’s Armenian genocide in Turkey. Armenians all over the world commemorate the victims. Some of survivors are still alive. Almost all Armenians in the west are ancestors of survivors. Many of us have some relative who survived. My grandfather is also from the family of survivors from Van.
I never liked the date, in particularly, because I felt a link between the date and the victim psychology among the nation. This psychology of the victim was also stimulated and greeted in USSR, as a way to make Armenians more loyal to the empire, and make them sure that they won’t be able to survive without the big brother.
Today is of course, non working day in Armenia, however I came to work, to deal with problems caused by power outage. I was passing through the building and made this photo. This is an A4 b/w print of the We are our mountains monument in Artsakh, and photo of Monte Melkonian, hero of so called NK war. This is what regular radio engineer have printed to hung over it’s table. And though it may seem “militaristic” to hung a photo of a man in uniform, I believe, it’s not really.
(Monte was a very interesting person. when almost all of the Martakert district was lost, and Azerbaidjani army had much more power, he was able to take it back. He had no tanks, but to the end of war he had ~40 tanks under his control, all captured from the Azerbaijani army. He did not tolerate marauding and never allowed that.)
Why is this? Because something have changed. Armenians do not perceive themselves as victims to the such extent as in the past. The important part of an Armenian identity today is that Armenians were able to defend themselves in Artsakh, the population was not eliminated, ethnic cleansings conveyed by Azerbaidjan in late eighties and early nineties failed, at least in most of Artsakh.
They were able to prevent the next genocide. That is why Artsakh is extremely important for any Armenian. That’s a symbol of a victory, probably the most important victory throughout the last ~1000 years.
And what is very sad, that Artsakh has no many chances to be recognized by the International community, and interests of Turkey, which keeps Armenia in blockade, and Azerbaijan, which has oil, are more important to the big players.
It looks like almost any major force is interested to make Artsakh controllable by aggressive, non democratic, militaristic, not tolerant Azerbaijan, which recently again tried to use violence to, as they say, “reestablish territorial integrity”, and in reality, to clean up remaining parts of Artsakh from Armenians. Or, may be make them citizens of the country which conveyed ethnic cleansings, and destroyed every Armenian heritage they were able to.

Azerbaijan was waiting for this revenge bore than 20 years.
Military and political preparations for the current events have been done during all these years.
Interesting question - why exactly now?
…
That’s simple: only Azerbaijan needs war today. And certainly known why - to return lost in 1994 territories, where now located not recognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Return of the territories, populated by Armenians under the control of Azerbaijan - that is understandable, concrete, never hidden, loudly declared task. Which wasn’t possible to solve 22 years by political means, and now, according to the definition of Karl von Klausevitz, is starting “the continuation of politics by other means”. However that is a politics of Azerbaijan alone, not the “all conflict sides”.
And it’s very much understandable, how this war can be stopped in 20 seconds. By one phone call from Kremlin to Baku, and one simple phrase: “Armenia is our ally”. Nobody in Baku is ready to fight Russia. And they would “go back to the previously prepared positions”. And defer “the continuation of politics by other means” to the better times, which are worser.

also from Waal:
Under this scenario, President Vladimir Putin can then intervene as the real peacemaker between the two sides and demand a peace deal that includes Russian peacekeepers on the ground.
The trouble with this theory is that Russia, although the most important secondary actor in the Karabakh conflict, does not control the situation on the ground. It is not powerful enough to make the Armenian or Azerbaijani military forces do as it wants. They are strongly independent bodies, answerable only to their own presidents. Russia’s ability to shape events is probably smaller than it looks.

The Azerbaijani side has more reason to break the ceasefire. As the losing side in the conflict of the 1990s, when it lost almost one seventh (or about 13.6 percent) of its de jure territory to the Armenians, Baku knows that one of its few tools of pressure on the Armenians is to violate the ceasefire and remind them that the status quo can be shaken.

It looks like Russia forces us to buy two Su-30 military air-planes. Probably it will cost us ~60.000.000 of dollars. I don’t quite get why do we need these planes.
There is a publication on Russian military blog, that there was some event a couple of days ago, during which “we asked” them to sell us these air-planes.
You probably are not aware, that we always “ask them”. And then they generously agree.
A couple of years ago we suddenly decided to “ask” them to support us in joining their union, which obviously they needed more for some reason, and which brings more problems to us, including, but not limited to the rise of prices, and no tangible benefit. Except if it can count as the benefit that Russia does not lead, or kindle war right now here. Yet.
Back to the theme. Armenia long ago decided to not develop it’s military aviation. It’s too expensive and not reasonable. Buying two Su-30’s sounds like nonsense to me.
These are heavy air-planes, that are able to carry a lot of weight to the very long distances, like a couple of thousands kilometres. What are we going to do with them? Attack ISIS? No seriously.
They are also completely useless, by taking in to consideration that Azerbaidjan successfully manages to block Stepanakert airport with it’s S-300 sets. What is the use of Su-30 in these circumstances?
Even if we would need a fighter jet, MIGs would fit more - they are lighter, more manoeuvrable and suitable for use on short distances.
$60.000.000 could be used to protect our near border villages and towns from the constant fire they get. There are many ways this money could be used instead.

while certain music was not welcomed very much in USSR, places like Caucasus were far away, hard to control, and sometimes even intentionally left more free, to prevent separatism. when armenian jazzmen was going to other parts of the empire they’ve got many negative feedbacks for their not conforming to the ideas of social realism beards and bourgeois music.
some then famous Russian performers had “grown up” in Armenia. For instance at 3.50 you can hear Larisa Dolina, ethnic Jewish from Azerbaidjan, who performed adaptation of folk Armenian song. Overall I cannot watch & hear these all now. Too boring for me. Third song seems too vulgar to me. At 13.23 though music gets better. (: No beards here of course. This was too official orchestra.

before my German friend left, we went to the place called “12 tables” to eat spas, amazing Armenian soup made from matsoun. I love it so much that I eat it every day. (:
When we were leaving it was late, the place is already closed. It somehow happened that we got acquainted with the owner (she also works there together with one assistant). She started discussion by noticing Mommintroll on my backpack. It turned out she’s from Artsakh. She said her mother was grown up and educated in Baku, and she does not know Armenian well. She married her father and moved to Martuni. They left it during the war, in 1992. By helicopter which took them to Yerevan. She described how they reached the helicopter in the night. She said “the toilet was in the courtyard, and we could not go to the toilet, because azeris would shoot us.”.
Then they moved to Poland, because they had relatives there. She returned to Yerevan several years ago, she spoke only Polish and Artsakh dialect of Armenian. She learned literate Armenian, the alphabet, and the grammar. She opened one of the best places in Yerevan, cafe-flat, with very tasty dishes. She’s proud she eventually made it completely smoke free.
She does not know if she’ll live here in the future. Because it’s not easy, even if you have business. I hope she will. Her assistant turned out to be a girl from Artsakh who came to study in Yerevan.
Her parents come to Armenia from time to time, but they don’t stay in Yerevan, they go to see their home in Martuni. “In Poland they live in rural area too.They don’t like big cities, many cars and noise” - she explained.

My German friend, when he lives in Yerevan, rents a room in some family apartment. it’s not only cheaper, but also he is able to socialize and understand locals better.
Last time he was renting a room in the flat of the elderly couple of musicians. they were speaking Russian, and were cursing Putin every day. He was asking, how it’s possible.
— Why, aren’t there people in Russia who disagree with his politics? — asked I and answered myself — Of course there are. Also, they speak Russian because educated people had to know well the language of the empire, and it was becoming a standard, default language for the educated class. it’s normal that educated people understand who is Putin, and don’t like him.
other time our German friend said:
— I’ve got acquainted with Armenian family from diaspora, from LA. They left Armenia in early eighties, but they look like stereotypical Americans - fat, they subsist hamburgers and they drink coca-cola. They were very thankful to Russia, they said: “Russia gave Armenians land to live and breed”.
He recounted it with small sparks in his eyes, wondering how we’ll react. i wanted to start explaining that it might be typical for Armenians who left in early eighties, and why. But my friend was unable to resist, and he shouted:
— it’s bullshit!
Now our German friend rents a room at the old woman’s apartment, previously she was soviet engineer. now she does “alternative medicine”. One of her patients has cancer and she believes that she can cure him with her movements. “When i awake, and see someone lays in the kitchen, i realize i cannot get a cup of water” - complains our friend. He also says that this elderly woman loves Putin.
— Why not? — said my local friend — Putin also can be considered as “alternative medicine”.

we supposed to share pictures of food, right? let me do that. i have a low blood pressure and sometimes i need something sweet in order to be able to work. i’ve got this honey, it’s from Berkaber. I know this village, i have been around during my military service. it’s located right near the border and overall is really touchy. all those villages near the border are especially touchy.
These villages are always under the fire, however recently there was an escalation, and deaths among peaceful citizens. We’ve been told that our forces had a decent answer and as a result 16 soldiers dead at the other side. As far as i know, indeed our forces strike back their military, not their villages. I also know that very often our military forces don’t get permission to answer. Sadly this only leads to the escalation of the fire from the other side.
So this is a food photo - honey from the village I served near, made by hard-working people (and bees) who live under constant fire near the border of my small country.

For me it’s very important to make this place better for youth, to create place where they can spend their free time with benefits for themselves. this was back ~10 years ago, at the Microsoft event, where they were basically stating that years of freebie passed, and we have to buy officially licensed Windows copies. As an answer to those, who were whining that Armenia is a poor country, and may it be they can sell licenses cheaper, a guy from M$ answered:
— you buy cars, right? why do you agree to pay for cars, but not for software.
Then there was a voice from auditory.
— can you sell us second hand copies of 15 years old windows installers?

I had to enter that building, which is called “Dom Moskvy”, exactly like that, there is no translation to Armenian or English, so it does not call “House of Moscow” or something like that. Whatever, I had to enter it. I have entered it, and there are several doors, transparent doors. all of them - locked. I was waiting for some of them to open. No electronics, of course. It is called “Moscow”! Okay, how do I enter this? And then I notice the piece of paper with inscription - “ВХОД”. Just a piece of paper. It means “Entrance” in Russian. Okay, I was thinking where to push, eventually just pushed glass and entered the building.
After I had my conversation at reception I told them:
— you know, it was kinda hard to understand where to go at the entrance.
— there is an inscription - “Vkhod” - she told me.
— yes, but first it’s necessary to notice that, and secondly - I don’t read Russian.
Now yes, I read Russian. I know it perfectly. And I like that I know it perfectly. (: But almost all of my friends - don’t, since they were raised or even born in Syria, Iran, Netherlands, USA, etcetera. And I know how they suffer from the assumptions that each and every Armenian has to know Russian. This is one of those situations - it’s a trifle, but you don’t feel comfortable because of that trifle. Same is at the train station. Since Russia got our railways, they don’t write the list of races in Armenian. Only in Russian. When I asked at the cashier’s desk - they told me - “you can ask us, if you are illiterate, and we can explain you”. Okay, what if I don’t want to ask, can you print it in Armenian as well? “No”, - they said. “We won’t”.
So I told her I don’t know Russian. Can they print the same paper in Armenian, indicating that it’s an entrance?
— No - she answered. It’s a Russian building.
And that’s not a good thing to tell if you want someone just to leave. What does it mean it’s a Russian building? It means you expect only people who knows Russian? You have hell of offices in this buildings, are you sure no other person can come?
— It’s located in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia - I said. We have the law regarding the language.
She didn’t even want to talk about it. “It’s a Russian building” - she said. - “That’s all. We won’t add another inscription”.
That’s it.
I don’t feel happy because of similar stories. I don’t feel happy at all.

So Putin does not care that Artsakh(NK) Armenians will remain in total isolation from the world. He just needs Armenia to sign Eurasian-Union agreement at any price.
the preliminary treaty states that the customs checkpoints will be created in Kashatagh, Lachin, and other roads going to Karabakh. Imported products from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia with have relatively high tariffs, in accordance to the Eurasian Economic Union. According to the circulating news, Armenia plans to sign this treaty on October 10, and will go into effect on January 1(2015)

Was it nice by naive Europe and US to support movement in Ukraine toward EU, and then refuse to help in case of Russian aggression? They didn’t expect it? Or they are so afraid of Russia?
Was it nice that when US, Britain and Russia demanded Ukraine to refuse from all their nuclear power, and promised to be warrants of Ukrainian territorial wholeness, that Russia was first who broke the agreement, by aggression, while UK and US just forgot about the paper. US even refuses to sell weapons to Ukraine.
Now, because of absence of western military support, Ukraine cannot fight Russian tanks, and cannot fight professionals from Russia. That’s why Poroshenko had to retreat and do what the monster, the Russian Tsar wants.
but that was predicted back in March by the former Putin’s advisor, and I have shared his talk in Russian yesterday. Putin will go as far as West will allow him.
What can stop tanks? Unfortunately, yes, other tanks can stop tanks. Man with a bag did not stop tanks moving to Tiananmen square. Tanks killed people.
We here know very well that the only reason Azerbaijan did not start war against Armenia yet, is that we are trying to not lag far behind their militarization, which is very hard, cause we are blocked, and don’t have oil money they have. Anyway.
Tanks can stop tanks. Yazidis don’t have military power, that’s why genocide of yazidis in #2014 was possible. And no one, no one helped them from the civilized world. As well, as nobody is helping Ukraine to survive Russian aggression.
This is a very old interview, which dates March 28. Unfortunately there are no good resources in English, and best talks of Illarionov are not available in English.
Now we know, why Yanukovich refused to sign agreement with EU in the last moment. He said to his close people, that Putin promised to take Crimea and Eastern part of Ukraine if he signs the paper. He was pale and frightened as never, as they say.
Also now we know, that military operation in Crimea had no connection with Yanukovich running out of Ukraine, because according to the Defence Ministry of Russia, it started in Feb 20, four days before he run away. Yes, they minted medals, “for taking crimea”, and we can see on those medals that operation started earlier, than they were saying it started.
Also we know from the very careful studies in April, that in all Ukrainian regions overwhelming majority of the people did not feel insecure because of religion, language or ethnicity, and that majority wanted to keep Ukrainian wholeness, continue to be Ukrainian citizens. It’s obvious that there was no people’s movement, but all the troubles were organized by emulating of movement by Russian SpetzNaz.
And corruption, that’s a very good lever if you want to colonize someone. That’s the lever Russia knows how to use.
It’s very pity that by having their great potential, their scientists and engineers they, instead of creating a civilized and developed country, make draconian laws and force free and clever people to emigrate from Russia, so that only controllable and manipulatable, non educated people remain there. I hope one day Russia will become a country, we all would want to be friends with. Not the country which forces Armenia to change national language. Not the country which wants all resources, to control anything, and wants to dictate everything, pressures so hard, by not giving us to take a breath.
Yes, if you don’t like US in Iraq, you shouldn’t like Russia in Ukraine or in Armenia. Let us be free.

Putin went on to praise the philosophy of the “Eurasian idea” and to assert that Kazakhs endorse it and see benefits to “remaining in the space of the larger Russian world.”
Solzhenitsyn’s Greater Russian, Orthodox-driven nationalism, Elder notes, “once had him appear sorely out of touch, but today [is] increasingly fashionable.”
http://www.rferl.org/content/russia-putin-solzhenitsyn-1990-essay/26561244.html
Apparently it’s good that we don’t have Russians in Armenia. Otherwise Putin would “protect” them, and we would have bloody events like in Ukraine. But stop! Putin will protect us from ourselves! The paper we signed with Russia, CSTO paper, contains a point that Russia may “help” our authorities in case of inner, not only outer threat. It means they’ll “save” us from having democratic elections, and change corrupted government. They need this corrupted and puppet government to dictate to us. Otherwise, if we try, they’ll protect us from ourselves.
Also, they’ll protect people of Artsakh. They desperately need their forces there. Once they enter, they’ll never get out.
#eurasian-union #russian-world #russia #imperialism #CSTO #Armenia #freedom.
And I guess I know one of the reasons you cannot hear voices of post soviet countries, if it’s not Russia, and if it’s not Putin. That’s something like imperialistic complex - you don’t think these countries are important - what is important for you is US-Russia conflict. And you blame yourself, US government.
Other, smaller countries are so insignificant, they just cannot have their own interests, their own pain, and their own aspirations. That all should be games and manipulations of the greats. #facepalm

System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian has addressed the recent tensions along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border
“Until there is a lasting peace agreement on Nagorno-Karabagh, both Armenia and Azerbaijan will be both militarily and financially constrained and fall deeper into corruptive political practices subservient to one superpower or another. Karabagh, called Artsakh in Armenian, has been an enclave with a majority population of Armenians given to Azerbaijan by Stalin.
“I’ve been to Artsakh on a visit to Armenia years ago and have to say that the people living there are gracious, generous, kind and deserve peace and prosperity as we all do,” reads his post.

As Conflict Escalates, Dictator Ilham Aliyev Needs to Be Stopped
While Syria burns, Gaza explodes and al Qaeda captures another Iraqi town, another full-blown conflict threatens to further destabilize the Middle East, this one between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is holding dialogue with the relevant Azerbaijani agencies on handing over the body of captive Karen Petrosyan to Armenia, ICRC representative said.
Fariza Tagiyeva, a woman who discovered the lost Armenian villager, said the locals asked him why he was afraid, and he replied that he had no weapons with him.
Tagiyeva took Petrosyan to a tea-house of Agbulag village where youth surrounded Karen and began questioning. The local said he had nothing, except for a normal phone. Besides, Karen did not show any resistance, and the questions ended when the military came to the village.

These attacks are more likely to come from the Azerbaijani side, which has rejected international initiatives to stabilize the ceasefire by removing snipers from the front-line. As the losing side in the conflict, the Azerbaijanis make it their business to challenge the status quo, make the other side nervous and remind the world of the conflict.

so, what do I think about it, why after 20 smth years, Azerbaijan military makes much more attacks now?
Because of two possible reasons, IMHO.
a) As you may remember, Russia forced Armenia to refuse joining EU agreement, and join Eurasion Union. Armenia cut it’s connections with EU by demand of Putin. Then, Eurasian Union did not sign the paper with Armenia (how lucky we are) because they demand to put customs between Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
BTW, Armenia and NK have the same economic space, and joined World Trade Organization without problems. Why? Because NK has no other connection to the world, it’s in blockade. Actually, Armenia is also blocked by Azerbaijan and Turkey, but we still have Georgia and Iran. WTO asked Azerbaijan, if they agree to shut down NK blockade, then Armenia can join WTO without NK. Azerbaijan refused. But now Putin and Nazarbayev, the dictator club, demand us to leave this people in blockade. (: Our puppet president cannot agree, he has no support in the country, and it’s impossible to leave NK people blocked even by us. They hardly survive even now.
However, Putin does not care. He needs Armenia to sign the papers, whatever it takes. If we need to make customs on the Armenia-NK border, then we have to obey. If we don’t obey, he asks his friend, another dictator, who puts all his oil money into buying weapons (also from Russia) to heat the temperature at the Contact Line, and disrespect the ceasefire which lasted more than 20 years.
b) Putin needs to have his army to control NK. Thus he will control the territory, and can manipulate Armenia and Azerbaijan even more. In this case Azerbaijan, because he got everything he wanted from Armenia. Almost everything, we did not change the language law, did not obey and add Russian as the state language in Armenia. That’s in every paper Russia suggested within OSCE Minks group, that they need to put their “peacekeepers” in NK. When they control the territory, they can manipulate Azerbaijan to join Eurasian Union, by trading lives of Armenians living in NK. Also, they need to have military bases in Azerbaijan, and Aliyev-father promised it to Russia, and refused to do that later. So this is a way they can get what they want.
Thus Putin needs manipulate Aliyev to restart the war, to make war happen, then put “peacekeepers” and control the NK, thus three coutries in the region.

Freedom House ranks Karabakh’s democratic credentials higher than those of neighbouring Azerbaijan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN0qjCUigac
That’s a very badly made film, but it’s still more than nothing. This is very important topic for me, for us.
NK(Artsakh) people is a nation which struggles for freedom, and has not less rights for freedom than let’s say Palestine. Nevertheless most of you don’t know about it’s existence. (:
Almost 100 years after Armenian genocide in Turkey, these people decided to not be victims, but defend themselves. And they succeeded. Which is unbelievable. But they don’t have recognition, instead, often Armenian side condemned. Surely, war is not a pleasurable time. But Azerbaijan started the war by ethnic cleansing of Armenian population - no Armenians, no problem. They failed, the brute force did not allow them to get rid of Armenians. Nobody were defending them. But small weak nation was able to win in a war against a big and rich country. Now Azerbaijan has hopes to return the “land” they need (not the people) by the help of diplomacy and oil. I live, may be, in the most militarized region in the world. Russia sells weapons to Azerbaijan, making billions of dollars per year.

facepalm,
In a tense exchange with Armenian pro-government lawmakers, Dmitry Kiselyov warned that Armenia will put its security alliance with Russia at serious risk unless it grants Russian an official status
http://www.azatutyun.am/content/article/25418743.html
why? it is not enough for them to force us to “join” their “union”, now they need Russian as an official language in our monoethnic country. Btw, Russian is still tought in schools, as a second language.

I can’t specify one special thing that makes me feel good here. I feel good here in general. I feel connected to everything here. Every single thing, including the motherland statue and Ararat Mountain. They make me feel good. Sometimes, after having a tough day, I walk up Cascade and seeing the Opera just in front of me, a huge smile unconsciously appears on my face.

The very first day I arrived in Yerevan, I went to the Yervand Kochar museum. It was very interesting. When I went to the Modern Art Museum, I couldn’t believe that I was standing right in front of Minas’s or Rodolf Khachatrian’s works.

This guy made a mistake to return to Soviet Armenia, and USSR didn’t let him out anymore. He was put to jail immeditially. He had a wife in Paris. USSR refused her a visa. So they did not see each other anymore. I may tell you something more about this great painter.

Yes, that’s true. I have been in Armenia during the communist’s rule, 35-40 years ago, for 15 days. It’s hard to compare that Armenia with today’s Armenia. I was limited that time. We were given a car with accompaniment - five men were watching for everything we were doing. They were showing us what they wanted to show. Everywhere we went, they were already prepared to meet us. Headmens were expecting us and greeting with vodka, etc. I wasn’t allowed to make photos of old houses, old villages. One time I was arrested when I was taking a photograph of the beggar. I was obsessed with beggars, poors that time. I was making photos of poor, wretched, blind, outcast. In Armenia at the market I was asked why I am doing it. I have explained that I have no bad intentions, and then some other men explained them that I am under the protection of the government.
For me, who came from Paris, that Armenia was a very strange country. I have seen at the market some people with one flower in hands. I was explained that indeed, they were selling that one flower. For instance, they have a one bush of roses at home, and it bloomed, so they cut one flower and go to market to sell it. I was very strange to me. Here, in France, it was ok to just throw out one flower. But there one flower was a luxury. Host of the house where I was staying, took one orange (it was also luxury in Soviet times) and told me: “this is from Moscow”. There were 5 people around the table, so he cut the orange to 5 slices and put one slice to the plate of each of us. In that small amount orange seems to be more tasty. I had an impression that country is very poor.
This time when I came, there was everything. It was possible to think that you are in a French city. A lot of construction work. Many people at streets. Many many people. I can see that everything moves forward.

Alex Balashov:
I’m leaving Armenia for a non-trivial period of time. I’ll be back in a few months, but am seriously reconsidering my previous inertia toward longer-term residence. I haven’t fully made up my mind. There’s some novel personal reasons that enter into the deliberation lately, including a very short-lived and spectacularly failed marriage here, but I’m not letting a bad marriage ruin Armenia for me, and I’m not here to talk about that. I wanted to share some more general parting thoughts and observations.

For years, when there was no border issue, people on both sides used to have close relationship with each other. Only several years ago the border control was strengthened. In spite of the border remaining non-demarcated, there is strong control on it. Moreover, there is no sign for people to realize where the lands of their villages start and where they end. Now the only thing people dream about is to have a check-point which would allow people to go from one village to the other one beyond the border. Crossing the border illegally leads to huge fines and even imprisonment.

it says: “to comrade Stalin. In order to clean Armenia from more anti-soviet elements, comrade Mikoian is asking to execute 700 more people. I am asking to execute 1500 people more, overall 2000”.
So, ironically, Mikoian, who also responsible for a lot of deaths, part of soviet mincing-machine, is now a successful sausage brend in Russia.

When Mariam Avanesian and her family fled to Yerevan from Azerbaijan 25 years ago this month, they thought they were lucky; they had escaped physical danger, and left behind an apartment rather than “a grave” in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. But moving to Armenia didn’t mean the end of uncertainty for Avanesian’s family members, and tens of thousands of others.

Happy Independence day, #Armenia. 22 years ago 99% of Armenia population voted for free, independent, democratic Republic of Armenia.
It is dangerous time for our freedom now. Putin is forcing us to join his new #Russian-Empire, which is called #Eurasian-Union - one whole country with one army, ruled from #Moscow. But let’s remember, that history does not end here. Empires are going to collapse, sooner or later. We survived so many empires throughout our history, let’s fight this empire too, we are not going to surrender..
Fuck Imperialism. Fuck Putin. Fuck capitalism.

To all folks out there in Diaspora who are interested in what the hell is going on in #Armenia. It may help to imagine situation to some extent. This #movie have been made by #documentary director #Ara-Shirinian. It’s long, there are 6 parts in it, not a high quality footage, but it has English #subtitles, that’s why I share it. It tells a #story about #epic #fail to #change the #system by #peaceful #revolution, without #force. Authorities used #army against #demonstrants which is against #constitution. It happened back in #2008, but I believe nothing really changed since then. #Authorities even gained more strength these days and are able to show that we have more #free-speech and everything is okay. So this movie is called #Change. As we got to know later from #wikileaks West did not support the change here. It was ok to trade #democracy for the authorities they can better manipulate. Nobody needs really independent authorities here.

The final report from the international election mission, also due in April, is expected to make uncomfortable reading for the president. Nonetheless, this is a less troubled start than the early days of Sargsyan's first term. On 1 March 2008, ten people were killed and scores injured during protests over alleged electoral fraud. Robert Kocharian, the outgoing president and Sargsyan's old friend, declared a three-week state of emergency, and the parliament passed a law curbing public meetings.

Open Letter to U.S. President Barack #Obama
I would like to express my concern about your congratulatory message to Serzh Sargsyan, the acting President of the Republic of Armenia, on his re-election. Your message came 12 days after the Presidential Election, which was marred with considerable election fraud. What I would like to ask you is: what changed between February 18 and March 2, to convince you that the official election results are reliable?
<br>
Your note of congratulation came amid numerous reports on election fraud, including ballot stuffing, voter bribing, voting on behalf of émigrés and deceased individuals, and multiple voting. The public outcry over these falsified official election results has escalated, with massive rallies held throughout Armenia and in other Armenian communities all around the world. Receipt of your congratulatory note also coincided with the day that OSCE/ODIHR revised its initial, generally positive assessment of the election, acknowledging the sensibility of public distrust in the official election results, and indicating facts that amount to election tampering

Immediately, it transpired that #Raffi was hovering up the votes. This caused some surprise with the local participants. Indeed, it became somewhat embarrassing in that virtually every vote was for Raffi. Every odd time, a vote came out for the incumbent, there was a slight laugh from some of the locals. On and on, it continued with Raffi getting virtually all of the votes.

Serj #Tankian ’s letter to Serzh(ik) #Sargsyan. #armvote13 #barevolution #soad #armenia #freedom #serj-tankian #serzhik-sargsyan
Dear Mr. President,<br>
<br>
Congratulations on your victory.<br>
<br>
Victory means getting the most votes, of course, in a democracy.<br>
<br>
Based on the overwhelming reported fraud from many NGOs, irrespective of the OSCE report, it seems like it would be scientifically impossible for even you, Mr. President, to know whether you actually won the majority of votes.<br>
<br>
That’s quite funny isn’t it? That you, the President of Armenia are not really sure, deep inside, whether you are the true chosen leader of your people or not.<br>
<br>
That would really bother me personally. If I wanted to lead my people, I would really want them to make that decision for themselves, because I respect my people and that is their decision to make. Otherwise, I would take over Armenia and call myself the Governor General of Armenia or Dictator du jour or whatever moniker I felt like sporting that day. Maybe your party is out of control and the oligarchs are running out of caviar or something and they want to make sure that the flow of the good times doesn’t stop.<br>
<br>
Whatever the case, it is time for change.<br>
<br>
Whether you’ve won fairly or not, somehow you are now President, again.<br>
<br>
What does that mean to you?<br>
<br>
Yes, Artsakh is important to us all and we have to struggle together for our brothers there.<br>
<br>
But what I mean is how are you going to progress the cause of Armenians, in Armenia and around the world?<br>
<br>
How are you going to help pull the country out of its economic, social, and political dysfunction and turmoil?<br>
<br>
Obama at least offers hope, even when he lets us down.<br>
<br>
Years ago, I started a campaign asking President Obama to do the right thing and stick by his promise to recognize the Armenian Genocide.<br>
<br>
You too took an oath, to the constitution of Armenia, to protect the country from enemies foreign and domestic. Those who steal elections from my people are domestic enemies that need to be punished.<br>
<br>
It should be your duty to enforce that, even if some think it hypocritical. You should also consider dissolving Parliament and being the first Armenian reformist President who goes out of his way to make sure that future elections are fair and representational.<br>
<br>
Serzh, everyone who knows me knows that I can’t stand injustice. And like most diasporan Armenians, I have always been reluctant to criticize your government directly and publicly. But the avalanche of people suffering under your rule due to corruption and injustice is tipping the scale for us all.<br>
<br>
You need to know that.<br>
<br>
Armenia is desperate for the rule of law more than anything else. And no one can be above the law. You can make that happen, now, by example and presidential decree.<br>
<br>
Unite us Serzh. Inspire us.<br>
<br>
Please take this challenge.<br>
<br>
Thank you for your time.<br>
<br>
Peace,<br>
Serj Tankian<br>

This is already an old #tradition, that #OSCE #observers acknowledge #faked #elections as #pure, #transparent and #democratic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wezm_DRkozs
The OSCE observers walked out of the hall when Nazaryan took the podium to read the statement on behalf of the citizens of #Armenia.
Dear political tourists, we have had enough of your efforts to legitimize the #fraudulent elections.
The recent presidential election in Armenia, when compared to previous presidential elections, has registered one step forward and three steps backwards, two steps to the right and a half step to the left. In a word, they haven’t corresponded to the RA Constitution, to the demands of the Election Code as well as international standards.
The elections have proceeded against the backdrop of proposed reforms to the Election Code by the parliamentary opposition that were rejected by the ruling majority. Even though international and domestic observers, rights defenders and the opposition raised concerns, especially regarding glaring inaccuracies in the voter rolls, after the parliamentary election, nevertheless, the ruling authorities did nothing to fix the problem before this recent presidential election.
In essence, last year’s parliamentary election and yesterday;’ presidential election took place on the same legal-normative basis.
Of note is the fact that in the February 18 presidential election none of Armenia’s primary political opposition forces either nominated their own candidate or supported any of the nominated candidates. I refer to the Armenian National Congress, Prosperous Armenia, the AR and the Free Democrats. This is ample proof that the election was not truly competitive.
The fact that none of the primary opposition groups refused to nominate their own candidate or support any other candidate running, points to the deep level of mistrust of citizens and political forces regarding the electoral process.
Thus, the opposition forces in the parliament, from the outset, have labelled the presidential election as a farce and a show, since as previously noted, the ruling majority squashed the passage of election reforms proposed by the opposition prior to the election period.
Even though on the surface there was the appearance that important democratic freedoms were being safeguarded during the campaign, including the right to run a free campaign, in reality, the campaign was noteworthy by its competitive inequality in favour of the candidate of the regime. In particular, administrative resources and powers were put into the service of the latter. This was accomplished via pressure brought to bear on state and public employees to attend campaign events of Serzh Sargsyan and to vote in his favour.
The election campaign did not proceed peacefully. Violence was inflicted on candidate Paryur Hayrikian. The man was shot. Another candidate, Andreas Ghoukasyan, staged a hunger strike to protest the electoral process which he labelled a mere show. The press covered cases of violence even on Election Day.
The campaign also stood out by its lack of political and individual professionalism. Candidates employed the crudest of language and public relation stunts. For example, the various incidents that took place during the campaign conducted by the regime’s candidate were widely mocked by large segments of society. As a consequence, citizens tended not to take the election process seriously.
On Election Day, polling precincts were transformed into theatrical stages where citizens showed their attitude to the process. The press and social internet sites were full of ballots invalidated by voters who drew caricatures on them. They drew images of figures from the plant and animal world, images lifted from fairy tales and television cartoon characters. In one precinct, a voter literally ate his ballot as a sign of protest. It significant to note that according to official statistics, the number of invalidated ballots came in third place.
Reports of duplicate voting, ballot stuffing, bribes, and substitute voting and other scams were raised throughout the election itself.
Thus, yesterday’s presidential election in Armenia can be described as yet another normal appalling election.
Dear political tourists, we’ve had enough of you legitimizing the fraudulent election. You are trampling those democratic values that you yourselves have broken.
