while certain music was not welcomed very much in USSR, places like Caucasus were far away, hard to control, and sometimes even intentionally left more free, to prevent separatism. when armenian jazzmen was going to other parts of the empire they’ve got many negative feedbacks for their not conforming to the ideas of social realism beards and bourgeois music.
some then famous Russian performers had “grown up” in Armenia. For instance at 3.50 you can hear Larisa Dolina, ethnic Jewish from Azerbaidjan, who performed adaptation of folk Armenian song. Overall I cannot watch & hear these all now. Too boring for me. Third song seems too vulgar to me. At 13.23 though music gets better. (: No beards here of course. This was too official orchestra.

But for many years Fuchs had been, along with a number of other top mathematicians, trying to alleviate the effect of the discrimination against Jewish students by privately teaching young talented kids who were denied entry to MGU.
As part of those efforts, Fuchs was involved in what became known as “Jewish People’s University,” an unofficial evening school, where he and his colleagues gave courses of lectures to students. Some of those lectures had even been held at Kerosinka, although this was before my time.
The school had been organized by a courageous woman, Bella Muchnik Subbotovskaya, who was its heart and soul. Unfortunately, the KGB got on the case, alarmed that there were unauthorized gatherings of Jewish people. She was eventually called to the KGB and interrogated. Soon after that interview, she was killed by a truck under suspicious circumstances, which led many people to suspect that this was in fact a cold-blooded murder. Without her at the helm, the school collapsed.

Russia wants to rewrite the rules in three ways. First, it does not believe that its neighbours should make their own decisions about their geopolitical future. Russia’s security, in short, depends on these countries’ insecurity. Russia particularly begrudges the former captive nations of the Soviet empire their freedom, their prosperity, and their independence. These pose an existential challenge to the stagnant and autocratic model of government pioneered by the Putin regime.

And I guess I know one of the reasons you cannot hear voices of post soviet countries, if it’s not Russia, and if it’s not Putin. That’s something like imperialistic complex - you don’t think these countries are important - what is important for you is US-Russia conflict. And you blame yourself, US government.
Other, smaller countries are so insignificant, they just cannot have their own interests, their own pain, and their own aspirations. That all should be games and manipulations of the greats. #facepalm

A man of Shahumyan who was 12 during those events told how the Russian soldiers shot the last people leaving the village in a Willis car. The child fell of the car with the others but did not die and understood that he should keep quiet. He lay quiet under the car and listened how the Russian soldiers shot the people, then climbed the cherry trees and ate cherries. Hranush Kharatyan says the man who was 12 then told her this picture remained in his memory.

Yes, that’s true. I have been in Armenia during the communist’s rule, 35-40 years ago, for 15 days. It’s hard to compare that Armenia with today’s Armenia. I was limited that time. We were given a car with accompaniment - five men were watching for everything we were doing. They were showing us what they wanted to show. Everywhere we went, they were already prepared to meet us. Headmens were expecting us and greeting with vodka, etc. I wasn’t allowed to make photos of old houses, old villages. One time I was arrested when I was taking a photograph of the beggar. I was obsessed with beggars, poors that time. I was making photos of poor, wretched, blind, outcast. In Armenia at the market I was asked why I am doing it. I have explained that I have no bad intentions, and then some other men explained them that I am under the protection of the government.
For me, who came from Paris, that Armenia was a very strange country. I have seen at the market some people with one flower in hands. I was explained that indeed, they were selling that one flower. For instance, they have a one bush of roses at home, and it bloomed, so they cut one flower and go to market to sell it. I was very strange to me. Here, in France, it was ok to just throw out one flower. But there one flower was a luxury. Host of the house where I was staying, took one orange (it was also luxury in Soviet times) and told me: “this is from Moscow”. There were 5 people around the table, so he cut the orange to 5 slices and put one slice to the plate of each of us. In that small amount orange seems to be more tasty. I had an impression that country is very poor.
This time when I came, there was everything. It was possible to think that you are in a French city. A lot of construction work. Many people at streets. Many many people. I can see that everything moves forward.

I know how crappy car is this. And god knows why, probably because it’s a relatively cheap SUV like car, it’s very popular in Armenia. Of course everybody hack and tune it. Nobody can use it out of the box, it’s just unusable then.

What’s interesting in these posters is that they suggest to manufacture nivas yourself. Probably they wanted to license it. However, I am not surprised that nobody wanted to produce nivas. (: And what a cynicism, they were stealing so many technologies from others, but wanted to license nivas. At least you have something to license. Something original. Which is always inferior anyway.
Also it has no real improvement since then. if we read about mitsubishi pajeros we notice how engineers do improve them. but not niva, it’s so anachronistic that is almost a relic.

In the 1960’s and 70’s they didn’t execute #professors and scientists anymore, but in return for their lives, they forced them to cooperate with the Soviet authorities. Most of them did cooperate with the government, since otherwise none of them would have been able to travel abroad and attend a single scientific conference. Such cooperation with #authorities, at first glance, was nothing special, and sometimes nothing was requested in return for their foreign trips, but this was only at first glance. In reality the main thing was taken away from them - freedom of speech and the right to have their own opinion. They couldn’t express their political views openly and had to support the government in all crucial cases (in every single one, for that matter). That’s what really happened - together with the Soviet government most Soviet scientists obediently created one big Soviet lie. Of course there also were exceptions - those who didn’t want privileges, apartments and cars given by the government (or the government didn’t with to encourage them). But there were very few of them - mostly they sat in the kitchens of their council flats. They would work, eat and drink and express negative opinions regarding the #Soviet #regime only there, in the safety of their tiny #kitchens. True, some - including academics - were in #jail (and not kitchen), but those were known as #dissidents.

When the men opened the coffin lid, Gega’s mother turned away, waiting for their reaction. The men, deeply stunned, looked at the corpse which was difficult to identify due to the lapsed time. But it was Natia Megrelishvili who said with conviction: ‘This isn’t Gega. This is Soso, it’s his jeans, there’s the sun drawn on them.’ The others looked at the open coffin again and only now discovered the deceased was wearing the jeans, unaffected by the time and the soil. The jeans looked new and there was a shining sun drawn above the right knee.

The Georgian authorities demonstrated more respect to the dead than to the living. However, there was one prerequisite for a guaranteed grave - one had to die ones’ natural death. If one was executed for crime, the dead convict would certainly be buried but he or she wouldn’t have a proper grave. Starting from 1920s, thousands of executed convicts found their eternal resting place in various unmarked stretches of land across the country. Very often the diggers assigned to the job of preparing a deep hole (not a grave) weren’t able to identify with certainty the places, especially that there were no landmarks to guide them and the work was usually done in the small hours, in complete darkness.

In those days every pair of jeans was believed to be American, and as the Soviet propaganda was particularly set to destroying American values, many thought the happiness lay where jeans were abundant. There was a grain of truth in such a belief because the Soviet state denied its citizens the basic civil rights, the right of property among them. One could truly be free only in one’s grave or rather, the authorities stopped worrying about your freedom and rights when you were safely put under the earth…. … There might have been other reasons, but the fact is that a grave was the only property people owed. Such political attitude marked the start of altering Georgian taste for the worse. For centuries, the traditional Georgian graveyards were simple and modest, while in the Soviet times the graves became ovely decorated, adorned with marble tables and benches, statues, bikes and even cars. The Soviet Georgians were confident in one thing only - the grave belonged to them, so they were taken care of and zealosly protected. People built and decorated them as they’d do if they had real estate property. The authorities turned a blind eye to the graveyard eccentricities. The Soviet regime principles didn’t extend to the Georgian graveyards.

On publishing this book, I did not consider its relevance in today’s current political climate, rather, I naively believed that after the USSR disintegration, the Soviet past of Georgia would become nothing but a bitter memory. I was wrong. As it turned out, the past can come back to haunt you, especially if we ourselves cannot move from it.

#Krushchev was very impressed by #American #washing-machines. He had to admit that #US was superior in this field. However when he was asked a question by one of the journalists about the impressions from #US technological advances he said that not washing machines make great countries, but missiles. I think, it is obvious that he was not right. Not that I love other player in that #cold-war - #US leaders. I just think that washing, and other machines, i. e. technologies that help regular people - are much more important than military technologies. Besides, in this picture it is possible to see #Brezhnev, one of the future leaders of the #USSR, who is famous by granting medals to himself and starting so called period of stagnation. #СССР
Also, I believe that time of evil empires is gone. Now it is time for technological advances and education aimed for people, not against them. It’s a pity that, let’s say not all the leaders can see that.
