Diaspora differs from Facebook or Google in the same way, as free market differs from central planning.

Google marks Artsakh IP addresses as Armenian, but Twitter marks them as Azerbaijani
That must be very frustrating, to live in Artsakh and to see twitter greetings in Azerbaijani, specifically when you are struggling for your freedom, and get bombed by Azerbaijani military.
I know the feeling. When I am driving in Artsakh, I tend to not open Google Maps, but use some Open Street Map software.
Because once I open google maps, then this is time to panic! Why there are Azerbaijani/Turkic locality names around? Where am I? Didn’t I get lost? Will they shoot me now? Oh, may be that’s google? But wait, then what this locality name means? Yes, I can read Latin letters, but what this locality name correspond to? Aaaaa… God save me! Please.
But openstreetmap shows a line of contact, shows Armenian locality names, and I see native homy letters. That feels safe. Everything is as it should be.
So, no, nobody can force me to use google maps, instead of OSM. (: No. Not possible. No. (:

why doesn’t graphics on ios lag as much? apparently, it’s because when you put the finger on the screen, it stops every process, except of a couple of important system services. even if you run a browser, and you put finger on screen, it stops unless you raise the finger.
android, on the contrary, tries to divide resources between processes.
this is why we often notice lags on android, and this is why ios seems to work smoothly. we cannot say - faster. it’s not faster, because other processes don’t even work for some time. it’s responsive, and looks faster to the user.
well, at least, this is why it’s often happens, when android user cannot call, or answer the call, while the same situation is not very much common in case of ios.

Election politics is very much a type of marketing, and politicians are starting to use personalized marketing’s capability to discriminate as a way to track voting patterns and better “sell” a candidate or policy position.
Psychological manipulation—based both on personal information and control of the underlying systems—will get better and better. Even worse, it will become so good that we won’t know we’re being manipulated.

Why I’m Saying Goodbye to Apple, Google and Microsoft

it is possible to download chromium (not chrome!) build for android here, or compile it yourself.

If there is a resource connected to your gmail.com account called something similar to “MessagingXXXXXXX”, that’s the ‘new’ Google Hangouts (the one that doesn’t play nicely with XMPP). And quite possibly it’s the Android application for Google Hangouts.
So yes, Google Hangouts stays connected even if the device you’ve logged into from is not. Apparently this is a connection that’s created internally, inside Google, from their Hangouts service to their Talk service — from the new IM tech to the XMPP tech. And if you try to trick the XMPP service to sign out Hangouts (for example, by creating a new connection with identical XMPP resource), the Hangouts will happily log back into XMPP in your name and present you as ‘away’. And messages intended to be stored offline will end up in Hangouts, never to be seen again unless you use Hangouts on other systems.

okay, we need to port it to #maemo #meego #jolla #sailfish #sailfish-os #nemomobile #ubuntu-touch #ubuntu, and then we need #diaspora to use #mozilla #geolocation instead of #google. (:

Probably, my main problem with many saas services, including facebook, is that they quietly substitute ideas of technology with exact services. The verb “to google” is a perfect example, because we all know that web search is not limited to google.
Companies like facebook and twitter avoid using standard technologies, so that people think of services provided by company, forgetting that Internet is a network, and it’s about technologies, not companies. It’s a space where anyone can create a service, by using common underlying and free for all technologies.
That’s why saas avoids usage of rss, for example. That’s why there is a question “what’s your name on skype?” instead of “what’s your chat id?”, as we do with email.

I personally have no problem with the whole #Apple #patents brouhaha. Steve #Jobs did a miraculous job on "dumbing-down" the smart #phone, to the point where it now has no buttons at all, and the only thing the user can do is finger-paint on it. The #touchscreen may seem like a cool approach to a user interface, but it also subtly locks the user into being merely a #consumer of information, never a #producer. The rest of the #cell phone #industry has blindly rushed down the rabbit hole right behind Apple. The jury really was right -- the whole world now is filled with iPhones and #iPhone wannabes. These corporations needed a good smack in the side of the head to remind them that Apple's way is not the only possible way to design products. Stuff like pinch-to-zoom is popular because Apple made it popular, not because it is necessarily the best way to do things. Right now, I don't see _anyone_ trying to actually compete with Apple. The default response seems to be what #Nokia did -- just give up, dump your entire internal R&D department, and license the latest #iOS clone from #Microsoft or #Google. Maybe if Apple wins enough patent cases, somebody will get the hint and go back to designing a device that isn't an iPhone
