it seems people usually understand “nothing” as dark, black. in the techno subculture, where “we don’t show off” — people choose no colour — black colour. in other words - blank, empty.
wait, but blank means white in a number of languages. first i know it from esperanto, where blanko is white. ‘blanc’ in french means white. ‘blanco’ in spanish. ‘bianco’ in italian.
so emptyness, depending on perception, can be black or white. or other colour?
indeed, if we think in rgb colourspace way, then nothing — 0, 0, 0 is black. however, in cmyk way, nothing is when you print nothing on a white paper. so nothing is actually white. so is the paper. in number of languages empty list of paper is blank.

i was reading fpc-3.0 release related discussions, and apparently there is a change in perception. not many reactions like “who ever needs it?”, “bury it”, “is it still alive?” any more. apparently more than 15 years was required to realize that it’s a normal project, not worse than many others, not some outdated technology, but keeps developing, there is a community, they do interesting things, have nice solutions, and project doesn’t look like it’s going to die. it’s alive and running. (:

at the left side is the scan, probably made by John Maloof, I guess with Epson V700 and published at his blog back in 2009. at the right side is, I guess, professional digitization, made with, I guess, Better Light Super 8K-HS, from the same negative, published at the vivianmaier.com site. of course it’s not only about technology, but also about perception and sense of aethetics, and experience of the person who made the digitizing.
the left scan is more contrasty and darker. the right scan leaves much better impression.
