competition is good. we can see it even by considering free projects: how firefox improved because of chrome/chomium and how gcc improved because of llvm.
btw, did you know about -fsanitze flag which first appeared in llvm and now in gcc? very useful!

if I were a leader of a software development company, I would make sure every project has a team which focused not on new features, not on development of the product, but on improving it.
I have an impression companies don’t invest in improvements, as if they cannot afford doing that. But if they were, they would have valuable advantage on the market.
