Welcome Welcome to PageStream 2.2! Soft-Logik Publishing is pleased to announce this free upgrade from PageStream 2.1. If you downloaded this patch archive from a network or BBS, and already own PageStream 2.1, you have everything you need to create and run PageStream 2.2. If you do not want to use a patch program to create your copy of 2.2, or if you prefer a printed addendum, you can order the upgrade from Soft-Logik for $25. You will receive a 12 page printed addendum and a complete four disk set. If you do not have PageStream 2.1, you can upgrade to version 2.2 by calling sales at 1-800-829-8608 (314-894-8608) for only $75. PageStream 2.2 is fully compatible with version 2.1. Documents and fonts may be switched freely between versions. The format for macros has changed somewhat, so old macro files will have to be re-entered. As well, macros saved as the default must be erased and re-entered. The tag format has also changed, however, old tags can be loaded into 2.2. Release 2.2 improves on PageStream's winning interface. The new toolbox provides faster access to magnification features and has more shortcuts to help you move more quickly through documents. This will improve the learning curve for new users and make PageStream even easier to use for experienced owners. PageStream 2.2 is the evolution of desktop publishing. It is the culmination of years of development and evaluation. The input of thousands of users and testers has resulted in the best integrated and designed interface of any Atari desktop publisher. We hope you enjoy using the new PageStream as much as we enjoyed creating it. Installation Several files have been changed in version 2.2: - replace PGS2.PRG: this is the new PageStream program. To create the new PageStream program file, you must run the patch program which modifies your copy of PageStream 2.1 to create 2.2. Refer to the README.1ST file for instructions. - replace or add any new printer drivers which are applicable to your system. - there are several new and improved drivers. Note that the new PostScript driver requires two separate files, the PostScript driver and prolog header (PSCRIPT.PRT and PSCRIPT.HDR). - replace FONTEQIV.V2: this will improve font compatiblity. - replace FONTSS.V2: this fixes some Compugraphic character mapping problems. Replace and add the above files to your working floppy disks or your hard drive, depending on your setup. 1. Run PageStream. Note that PageStream 2.2 will take longer to load the first time because it will verify the location of all font files. Subsequent loading times will be shorter. 2. Select Set/Save Paths and choose the Font Manager button. The Font Manager dialog box will open. Update the paths for CS Times, CS Triumvirate and Garamond fonts. (Select the path in the left selector, then choose the Update button.) Update the path for the Fonts directory. (Even if there are no files in the Fonts directory, its path must be added.) 3. Select the Default button. PageStream 2.2 is now ready for use. Installation Notes Never use old (1.0-1.8) printer drivers or import modules with PageStream 2.2; use only 2.1 or 2.2 printer drivers and import modules. Only some modules and drivers have been updated this version. If some of the drivers or modules you use have not been updated, continue using the drivers which were included with version 2.1. PageStream 2.2 is fully compatible with all versions of the Atari operating system from TOS 1.0 to the most recent version. It is also compatible with the upcoming MultiTOS (multitasking version of TOS). While it is compatible with most public domain and third party accessories and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs, compatibility cannot be guaranteed if those programs do not follow proper Atari programming procedures. While PageStream 2.2's text display speed is much faster than its predecessor, font rendering speed is a function of available memory and processor speed. Compugraphic fonts render much more quickly when cached in RAM, but 4 MB of RAM is required. PageStream 2.2 is entirely usable with a 8 MHz 68000 processor, but there are several lowcost accelerators now available which improve PageStream's speed. The addition of a math coprocessor (FPU) will not increase PageStream's speed because it does not use floating point arithmetic. TT030 Notes PageStream 2.2 can be run from ST or TT RAM (random access memory), but not both. For example, if your system has 4 MB of ST RAM, and 8 MB of TT RAM, you can choose to run it in 4 MB of ST RAM or 8 MB of TT RAM. The entire 12 MB of RAM will not be available to you because the memory is not continuous and cannot be treated as one block of memory. The SLM804 and SLM605 printers require that you use ST RAM in order to print to them. It is NOT possible to print to Atari laser printers if PageStream is run in TT RAM. SLM printers also require 4 MB of ST memory in order to image a page. If you have the Diablo emulator loaded you must use the DIAB804.PRT driver. When not using the emulator, use the SLM804.PRT driver. Resolutions of less than 300 dpi are only available with the DIAB804.PRT driver. PageStream 2.2 can be run in TT medium resolution for a total of 16 displayable colors. PageStream 2.2 can display up to 256 colors with additional hardware such as the Crazy Dots or ISAAC graphic cards. Contact their manufacturers for more details. ST/STe Notes The Edit Color Palette dialog box can only display a sample of the actual color in 16 color mode, so this ability is not available on the ST/STe computers. Drawing Tools (described left to right, top to bottom). Text Tool: No change in function. The Text tool is used to enter text and to change text attributes. Pointer Tool: No change in function. The Pointer tool is used to select, move and resize objects. It is also used to change the attributes of objects. Master Page Tools: The Left and Right Master Page tools are unchanged in function although their appearance is different from previous versions of PageStream. Clicking on a Master Page tool will move to the left or right master page. If the current document is single-sided, both tools will move to the single master page. Go To Page Tool: The Go To Page tool is unchanged from previous versions. Clicking on its icon will open a dialog box to select a page to edit. (Note that the requester's default is now blank, instead of page 1.) Holding down a Shift key while clicking on the Go To Page tool will move to the last page viewed. Flip Page Tools: The Flip Page tools are unchanged from previous versions. Click on the Flip Page Left tool to move one page left in a document, or on the Flip Page Right tool to move one page right. Holding down a Shift key while clicking on the Left or Right tools will move to the first or last pages containing objects. Drawing Hints You should use Snap-to-Grid to help draw accurately sized objects. PageStream maintains a high degree of internal accuracy, but you cannot draw as accurately on a 65 dots per inch monitor. While lines may appear aligned visually, PageStream may have different internal coordinates for them and they could appear out of alignment when printed. Snap-to-Grid alleviates these difficulties by ensuring that all objects snap to the nearest grid point. (Use the Show Grid command to see the grid, the Set Grid command to set the grid spacing, and the Snap-to-Grid command to toggle on and off the grid feature.) One change has been made in the way the grid works in this release: objects will now snap to the grid while they are being drawn. Previous versions of PageStream snapped the object to the grid after it was finished. This change should make drawing even easier. Text Object Justification In previous versions of PageStream, text objects could not be justified, although Center and Block Right worked to some degree. This has been changed in PageStream 2.2, and all justification options may be applied to text objects. This may create surprises when opening old documents with PageStream 2.2. If you created a text object in 2.1 while word, character or auto justify was selected, the text would have been blocked left. The attribute changes were entered, but not implemented. These text objects will now be justified in 2.2 so you may have to select these objects and use Block Left to reformat them. Screen Redraws Screen rendering of text is significantly faster in PageStream 2.2. Users of 68000 machines may wish to take advantage of version 2.2's new draft mode to make it even faster. Select the Set Greeking command from the View menu and toggle on the Draft button. All text will now be shown as bitmaps. This will not affect printer output, but will speed the screen display by reducing the quality of screen text. If a bitmap version of the font is not available, a sans serif Helvetica-like font will be shown. Shortcuts PageStream is filled with time-saving shortcuts. Many use the Shift key in conjunction with a menu command to speed up commonly used features. Some of these are: Shift New: opens a new document using the previously set values. Shift Print: prints the active document using the previously set values. (Except for pages printed. The All Pages option will be ignored, and the page range set in From/To will be used.) Shift Duplicate: duplicates the selected objects using the previously set values. Shift Create Columns: creates columns using the previously set values. Shift Edit Hyphen Exceptions: opens a file selector to select a list of words to add to the hyphenation dictionary. Only words which differ from the rules will be added. The words in the file should have slashes (/) to indicate where to divide the word, and should have a space, carriage return or line feed to separate words. Shift Edit Spelling: opens up a file selector to select a list of words to add to the spelling dictionary. Same as Edit Hyphen Exceptions. Shift Remove in the Font Manager: removes all font paths from the font manager. Shift Copy or Shift Paste: clears the copy buffer without actually copying anything to the buffer. Whenever you import a picture or a block of text, or copy an object, the data is stored in a temporary buffer. Use this command to free up the buffer's memory. New PostScript Printer Driver PageStream 2.2 has a brand-new printer driver for PostScript printers which is faster and has more options. The driver name is the same (PSCRIPT.PRT) but a second file, PSCRIPT.HDR, is now required as well. This text file is the PostScript header which is inserted in PostScript output and makes it easier to update the PostScript printer driver. PostScript output is now centered on the page to avoid the edge cutoff common to laser printers. This is only of use if the page size is smaller than the paper size. Configure Printer Options Some options in the Configure Printer dialog box were previously undocumented or added in version 2.2. Note that these options are for use with the PostScript driver only. The additional options are: NOTE: Do not type the quotes in the commands below. ie:'color' should be color EXAMPLE: color, time, f[128,121.05,121.05,119], a[45,0,33.124,0] Put the command 'color' in the Special text field to print to color PostScript printers. If you do not include this command, PageStream will print the page in grayscales. Do not include the command when you do not require color printing because it slows down printing considerably. Put the command 'bleed[h,v]' in the Special text field to set the size of the bleed area for printing with crop and registration marks. The default is a 0.5 inch bleed area. (The crop and registration marks take up 0.5 inches so this is a good minimum size.) The values h or v must be specified in points. If only one value is entered, it will be used for both the horizontal and vertical bleed size. Put the command 'EPS' in the Special text field to print pages to disk which you plan to later re-import as an EPS graphic into PageStream or some other desktop publisher or illustration program. This command is required to stop layout information from being included in the EPS file. Put the command 'resident' in the Special text field to stop the PostScript header from being downloaded with each page. The PostScript header will only be downloaded with the first print job in each session and will not be re-downloaded until the next time PageStream is loaded or the next time you load the PostScript printer driver. If you turn off the printer for some reason during a PageStream session, you must force a redownload of the header by reloading the PostScript printer driver from disk. Put the command 'time' in the Special text field to print the job processing time with the output. This option is intended for troubleshooting only. New Crop and Registration Marks PageStream has always had adequate crop and registration marks but version 2.2 will definitely impress your service bureau when you send them pages for imagesetting! The crop marks are unchanged, but the registration marks are now more professional. When Crop/Registration Marks are selected, slur gauges will be printed in the top right and bottom left corners. As well, color strips will be printed in the bottom right corner. The color strips on each separation will be offset and will not overlap. The frequency and screen angle of the page (or color separation, if applicable), will be printed immediately below the file name in the bottom left corner of the page. Note! Crop marks will print to non-PostScript printers, but the other printing aids here are not available without a PostScript interpreter. Stop Printing Pressing the Help key to stop PageStream from printing does not stop PageStream immediately. This feature has been improved in version 2.2 and a Stop button has been added to the Printing dialog box. PostScript printing will stop much faster than non-PostScript printing due to differences in the drivers. Import/Export Modules Several modules have been updated and others have been added in version 2.2 to further improve PageStream's flexibility. The significant changes are: New Modules CVG: This module will import drawings saved in Calamus Vector Graphics format. All options are supported. A few files may not import as expected due to differences in fills between Calamus and PageStream. (PageStream can only support PostScript compatible fill options.) Arabesque: This module will import bitmap graphics saved from Arabesque Professional. Calamus Text: This module will import text files saved from Calamus or PKS Write. That's Write: This module will import text files saved from That's Write. Calligrapher: This module will import text files saved from Calligrapher. Improved Modules ASCII: The ASCII text import module has several new options to help you load PC and Mac format text files. The ASCII text import module has a new option for compatiblity with some text editors. EPS: There are now three PostScript import modules. The modules let you import ASCII EPSF files (which will be shown as a box with a X), Macintosh EPS files with PICT headers (which can be shown with bitmap previews on screen) and IBMEPS files with TIFF headers (which can be shown with bitmap previews on screen). Adobe Illustrator: drawings saved in Illustrator's version of EPS can also be imported as objects. (You will be presented with a choice of import modules in the Import Graphics dialog box if PageStream recognizes the file as an Illustrator drawing.) This module will not import text or fountain fills, but will import the drawing as a group of objects. You can then use Ungroup to separate and edit the drawing inside PageStream and print it to any type of printer. Most of the graphics in the Soft-Logik Graphic Library were created with Adobe Illustrator. This opens an entire new world of clip art to non-PostScript users. Note that Avant Vector and Convector Professional save in Illustrator EPS format, so their output can be imported as grouped objects into PageStream. GEM: The GEM import module has been improved to accept files stored in the GEM/3 format. This format includes Bezier curves and is used by most current Atari software (and PC GEM software). Plotters and Sign Cutters PageStream 2.2 has a new HPGL driver for printing to plotters and sign cutters. Instead of using limited specialty software on MS-DOS computers, you can have access to all the features of PageStream and push your plotter or sign cutter to the limit. (This is an excellent small business opportunity!) All of PageStream's features will work except for bitmap pictures which cannot physically be reproduced by plotter pens, and Compugraphic fonts which are incompatible at this time. This driver has several command options which you can enter in the Special text field in the Configure Printer dialog box: color: will switch pens if included. (Other wise will print entirely in black.) fill: will print solid objects as solid. (This is suitable for small objects.) stroke: will outline all objects and text with a black line. The fill and stroke options are not applicable to sign cutters. If you are using a Roland CAMM1 sign cutter, an additional command has been provided for full compatibility: camm1: will provide compatibility with the Roland CAMM1 sign cutter. Compugraphic Font Notes Do not purchase Compugraphic fonts on MS-DOS format disks unless you have access to an MS-DOS computer or emulator. Agfa sells their fonts in a generic format (FAIS) which must be converted to Intellifont format using a supplied MS-DOS installer program. Some Compugrahpic fonts will not work properly with PageStream 2.2 due to character mapping problems. These include the Dingbats and Symbol fonts sold by Gold Disk on Amiga disks. Compugraphic fonts have a size limit which prevents them being printed at sizes around one inch. This is due to the font code written by Agfa. The size limit depends on the complexity of each character so you may notice characters not printing at some sizes. Miscellaneous Improvements in 2.2 This release of PageStream contains thousands of changes to improve program stability and interface uniformity. Some of these improvements are: PageStream is now stable on 1MB machines and will let the user recover from low memory situations. When typing over highlighted text the first character is now redrawn. More efficient screen redraws are employed for Move to Page, Set Grid, Show Pictures and Create Columns. The Fonts/Points dialog box opens more quickly. Text display speed is no longer dependent on the number of fonts installed, or on the size of the FONTEQIV.V2 file. You should use only the FONTEQIV.V2 file supplied with PageStream 2.2 for full font compatibility. The relative depth of grouped objects is retained when copying and pasting within a document. Resizing vertical or horizontal lines with Edit Coordinates now works as expected. Placing the cursor before the first character in a column now picks up the attributes of the first character. Using Select All to highlight all the text in a column or text object will pick up the attributes of the last character. Ruler numbers are more legible and ruler numbers can be greater than 999. Text runaround fuctions correctly without respect to the number of selected objects. Printing tiles works more efficiently because only the required information is sent to the printer for each tile. Changing the point size of rotated objects has no effect on object coordinates. The presence of rotated objects on a page has no effect on other objects. Line spacing is adjusted accordingly when grouped text objects are proportionally pasted. Batch hyphenate hyphenates after en and em dashes. EPS files separate correctly. Arrow gadgets function once, then repeat after a short pause to provide more positive control. The Control D character codes correspond correctly to the PageStream character set. You can now select fill color and fill style, or line color and line style, in any order. You can type the name of a color in the text gadgets in the Line Style and Fill Style dialog boxes. Text flow is updated when editing the coordinates of objects with text runaround. Unlock/Lock/Line/Fill commands now reset all selected objects. Em and en dashes are spaced correctly in Compugraphic fonts. Super and subscripts can now be underlined. Measurement system abbreviations are now case sensitive. Text can be pasted even if it is taller than the current column or text object height. When Show Pictures is toggled off, the screen will not be redrawn. Picture outlines will not replace pictures until the next screen redraw. Paragraph Formatting (indented and outdented first lines) now works the same as Super/Subscripted text. Batch kerning PostScript Type 1 fonts now works properly. Legal size documents can be printed to laser printers with multi- purpose trays. (ie: QMS410, TI MicroLaser.)
