By pressing 'Index' a correspondingly restricted index will be read in order to select the desired files. Here one may also choose whether the backup is suppose to be appended at the tape or not. If the backup will be written at the beginning of the tape, all data on the tape are going to be deleted!! This is not caused by GEMAR but by the meaning and the way of function of a streamer. Incremental- and daily-backups are only applicable within the registered version. Afer the backup procedure the index will be removed from the storage. A new index must be entered, if further files are suppose to be saved. The dialog appears only, if a tape index is read and files are marked, or if no index has been entered. In the first case only a backup of the marked files can be carried out (Shell-Backup). In the latter no shell-backup can be made. If an index has been entered but no files are marked, a backup cannot be carried out. %FReferences:%F İMenu-BackupİMenu-Backupİ İFile-RestoreİFile-Restoreİ @ ***************** File-Restore ************ @File-Restore@ During a file-restore you can choose whether all files or only the marked ones shall be modified. The corresponding button is not choosable if no files are marked. In addition one can choose whether the files shall be written into the same path as during the backup, or whether the files sahll be written into a new path. Please keep in mind: there is a significant difference between window-menu 'restore' and main-menu 'restore': -only the files and binders within a path of a certain window can be modified after the call of a window-menu -after a call of the main-menu all files will be modified After 'restore' only those files are marked which have not been restored. Please see also backup parameters. %F%U ATTENTION %U%F It is not possible to mix file- and image-backups on one single tape. %FReferences:%F İMenu-BackupİMenu-Backupİ İFile-BackupİFile-Backupİ İBackup parametersİBackup parametersİ @ ***************** Image-Restore ************* @Image-Restore@ In the following some informations are given for the case of having read the header of an image-backup. There is a number of options: Pressing %FOrigin%F indicates how the hard disk was partioned when the backup had been made. %FNext%F skips this backup and reads the next backup. %FRestore%F starts the restore procedure of the data. Before that, GEMAR asks for the desired partition. If the desired partition is too small th backup cannot be carried out. If the partition is too large the restore can be performed. Pressing %FAbort%F makes you to leave the restore function. %FReferences:%F İMenu-BackupİMenu-Backupİ İImage-BackupİImage-Backupİ @ ***************** Image-Backup ************* @Image-Backup@ With an image backup the entire partition or the whole hard disk can be saved on a tape. Due to that also partitions of alternative systems such as OS9, Minix, Spectre etc. can be saved. Only the partitions which have to be saved are to choose. Afterwards the backup can be started. Within the field which contains the SCSI-address, the hard disk will be selected that is to be saved, The list of partitions will directly be read from the root-sector of the hard disk. Hereby, only the official formats by AHDI, or CBHD can be recognized. AHDI represents the official dealer of Atari, CBHD the disk driver known from the text book "Scheibenkleister". Different formats are not supported. A maximum number of 30 partitions can be . For a full backup of a drive, the drives port must support Class 1 Commands (READ CAPACITY) or the drive must report correct values on MODE SENSE. %H ATTENTION %H File- and Image-backups must not be stored mixed on one tape. %FReferences:%F İMenu-BackupİMenu-Backupİ İImage-RestoreİImage-Restoreİ @ ***************** Read Index ************* @Index lesen @Read Index After an index of a file backup was entered, some informations about the backup will be given. One can now choose whether a backup shall be edited, whether the next backup on the tape shall be read. @ ***************** Marking ************ @Dateien markieren @Mark Files There are three options applicable to mark files as a Backup/Restore. %FBy names%F Files will be selected/deselected by their names %FBy the date%F Files will be selected/deselected by their date of creation. Thereby all files can be modified which a younger than a reference date and all older files: The default date is -Date of the last full backup as 'Older than date' -Point of time which presents the start of the program as 'Younger than date' %FBy attribute%F Files will be selected/deselected by their file attribute. All functions include the option of selecting/deselecting the file with respect to its' selection criterion. Files will be selected if %FAdd%F is chosen. Files will be deselected if %FSub%F is chosen. With this more complicated selection criteria can be considered. If %FRecursive%F has been selected all subbinders will be modifed that belong to the path, where the selection had started. There is a difference between a selection within the main-menu and a window: -within a window, only the files will be modifed which are in the path in the window -within the desktop all paths will be modified, therefore this is only reasonable in connection with %FRecursive%F %FReferences:%F İMenu-EditİMenu-Editİ @ ***************** Streamer parameters ************* @Streamerparameter @Streamer parameters This dialog box deals with the settings of the streamer parameters. A number of words in the proper sequence may have a significant influence on the streamer. The parameters should be adjusted properly in order to gain the best efficiency. %H ATTENTION: Wrong settings may lead to crash the program! %H %FReferences:%F İMenu-OptionsİMenu-Optionsİ İCommandsİCommandsİ İTimeoutsİTimeoutsİ İSCSI-WaitsİSCSI-Waitsİ İSCSI-AddressİSCSI-Addressİ İQuick File AccessİQuick File Accessİ @ ***************** Quick File Access ************* @Quick File Access The Quick File Access functions are needed to quickly reach a certain location on the tape. 'Seek' is an internal command, used by Tandberg in Streamers with SCSI-1 firmware. Tandberg Streamers with SCSI-2 firmware only support 'Locate'. 'Locate' is a normed SCSI-command. It will be supported by some streamers. Please notice that the streamer has to support 'Locate' as well as 'Read Position'. These commands are class 1 commands, which means that they can only be used with the SCSI-Port of the TT or Falcon, or with the ALTA, respectively. Any doubts ? - choose 'none'. %FReferences:%F İStreamer parametersİStreamer parametersİ @ ***************** Streamer Commands ************* @Kommandos @Commands With 'Streamer commands' one can decide which commands shall be supported by the streamer. These commands are all optional alternative commands according to the SCSI-Norm. If the streamer does not recognize a command, it can be deactivated here. If the Mode Sense was activated it can be checked whether the block size matches the settings during the input of a tape. With Mode Select one can set the streamer at the desired block size. This is necessary at streamers which announce an error at a set Fixed Bit (e.g. HP-DAT), or Streamers not set to buffered mode by Default (e.g. DEC TZ30). The streamer will then be adjusted at the selected block size using Mode page $10. At machines working with the SCSI-2 norm all command parameters can be turned on. In case of the occurence of a problem the machine does %Unot%U keep the SCSI-2 norm. %H ATTENTION: Wrong settings may lead to crash the program! %H %FReferences:%F İStreamer parametersİStreamer parametersİ @ ************************* SCSI-Waits ************************ @SCSI-Waits SCSI-machines send a message to the SCSI-Bus (Msg-Byte) after a command has been carried out. In order to avoid the simultaneous occurence of this byte with a new command, one has to wait a short while. This makes sure that the Msg-Byte has definitely passed the SCSI-bus. The period of time should be chosen as short as possible in order to save time. On the other hand it must be long enough to avoid errors. In this case GEMAR will send an error message. The time intervals are given in system ticks of 5ms. %FReferences:%F İStreamer parametersİStreamer parametersİ @ ************************* Timeouts ************************ @Timeouts %FLoad-Time%F is the time interval which passes by while waiting for the streamer when a tape is being loaded. It might take a short while to rewind the tape since it may be at the end. In order to avoid the occurence of a Timeout the, value should be as high as necessary to exceed the complete rewind procedure (The programs will be terminated with an error message, since the streamer is not going to be ready after elapsing the time). %FRewind-Time%F represents the maximum time needed to completely rewind the tape. %FSpace-Time%F is the time that passes by after a space-command. As a reference value the time should be adjusted such that it would be able to completely read the tape (thus, with a transfer rate of 5MB/min ca. 15 min. with a 60 MB streamer). %FRead-Timeout%F A few streamers may need some time until the first block will be read/written on the tape. This is because the track for reading/writing the data must be found first. In addition the streamer needs some time for changing the reading/writing direction at the end of a tape. In order to avoid an error message during the change, this time needs also be adjusted. %FReferences:%F İStreamer parametersİStreamer parametersİ @ ***************** SCSI-Address ************* @SCSI-Adresse @SCSI-Address The address to which the SCSI-device (Streamer or hard disk) is connected, can be determined here. ALTA and DMA are adapters which are connected to a DMA-port. Will the streamer be hooked on to the DMA-port with another adaptor than a c't-ALIA, some particular functions cannot be used. Those are: -Show error messages of the SCSI-machine -Functions on the Quick-File-Access -Mode Sense in prior to a backup @ ***************** Desktop Parameter ************ @Desktopparameter @Desktop parameters Here a selection of parameters in the desktop can be adjusted. Among those is the way the files will be presented in the window, as well as the use of the GDOS-fonts. Please note that the presentation using GDOS-fonts needs storage. It might be better not to use GDOS if only a limited storage is available. %FReferences:%F İMenu-OptionsİMenu-Optionsİ @ ***************** Backup Parameter ******* @Backup Parameter @Backup parameters %FVerbose%F : During Backup/Restore extended inforamtions on the process will be provided. Beside others, these information are the current file, the degree of buffer contents, as well as the entire process of the activity. If Verbose is not used, a beam will be shown which reveals the particular level of progree. As the output needs some time, Verbose should be turned off. %FMedia-Change%F : After each hard disk partition that has been done a 'Forced-Mediachange' will be performed. This option should be used only, if there are any problems during the backup. (OUT OF INTERNAL MEMORY) %FTime before SCSI%F : The time of the last streamer action will be recorded before the actual action. This is an essential value for deciding whehter a streamer can be kept running. Using TEAC, this point should be activate. Please read the manual for a more detailed description of the impact of the backup velocity. %FPassword%F : Backups will be coded with a password. %FVerify Backup%F : After Backup, the data written to the tape will be verified by a comparing run. %FClear Archiv Bits%F : After a Backup has been performed the archiv bits of the saved files will be deleted. %FCompress Data%F : The data will be compressed before they are going to be stored on the tape. %FWrite Index File%F : The index of a performed backup will be saved as a binary file. This file can be read in by selecting 'Editing Read File'. It will be stored in the start path of GEMAR under the name GMddmmyy.IND. %FWrite Index File (ASCII)%F : The index of a performed backups will be saved as an ASCII-file. It will be stored in the start path of GEMAR under the name GMddmmyy.TXT. %FOverwrite Files%F : Files which are already existing will be over- written during a restore. %FOverwrite newer Files%F : Files which are younger than the files in the backup will also be overwritten. Therefore, the point 'Overwrite Files' must be selected. %FDrives to backup%F : In order to prescribe, wich drive is suppose to be considered during backup, this button leads to a dialog box for selecting the desired drives. %FBackup-Buffer%F : Segmentation size of a buffer storage. Having a segmentation size of 0 kBytes, only a buffer is used that is as large as the available storage. %FRestore-Buffer%F : The same can be said for the restore. A separation makes sense as it is hardly possible to remain in the restore mode. Therefore one may put a zero here, while at a backup one can stay in the streamer procedure with another size of a segment. %FMaximum memory%F : The maximum memory to be allocated for the buffers. On machines with very large RAM it may be better to limit the amount of memory to be used. 0 = use all available memory %FMax. Read%F : There will never be more data taken from a file as it is restricted by the maximum reading capacity. %FData Rate%F : The data rate determines what speed is provided for supplying data to the streamer. The value should be slightly higher than the data rate of the streamer in order to set off the tolerances of the time distribution. More detailed information can be found in the manual. %FReferences:%F İMenu-OptionsİMenu-Optionsİ İPasswordİPasswordİ İBuffersegmentationİBuffersegmentationİ İCompress DataİCompress Dataİ İDrive SelectionİDrive Selectionİ @ ***************** Data-Compression ************ @Daten komprimieren @Compress Data In order tp write a particularly high amount of data on a tape, the data may be compressed before saving. An external program is used for compressing, so that the compressing pro- cedure can be chosen from different options, For doing this all necessary parameter will be a set within the file 'GEMAR.PAK'. Please note that the data rate for saving is extremly low! %FReferences:%F İBackup parametersİBackup parametersİ @ ***************** Drive Selection ************ @Laufwerksauswahl @Drive Selection In some cases it is more reasonable not to save all the drives which are known to the system. There are problems, for example, if you want to save the pseudo drives during the use of MiNT or MultiTOS. It can also be that you like to exclude drives that are not supposse to be saved, such as, e.g., CD-ROMs or network drives or (last but not least) the XFS-Drive of your Streamer. The drive selection will also be considered during the start up of the program, where only the drive icons, belonging to the drives to be saved, will be shown. Default drives are drives C: through P:. %FReferences:%F İBackup parametersİBackup parametersİ @ ***************** Streamer-Control ************ @Streamer-Steuerung @Streamer-Control Here, one can work with the streamer. Four actions can be carried out: %FRetension%F : The tape will be winded forward and backward. This command only works, if 'Load Tape' is permitted among the streamer commands. %FRewind%F : The tape will be rewinded to the beginning %FTape end%F : The tape will be winded to the end of the existing data (logical end of tape). %FErase%F : All data existing on the tape will be deleted. %FReferences:%F İMenu-StreamerİMenu-Streamerİ @ ***************** Batches ****************** @Batches In order to automate repeating actions, GEMAR offers the possibility of using batches- These batches are readable files with commands which describe the necessary actions. All actions that have been carried out are written in one batch in order to simplify the creation of batches. Such a batch can be modified or extended afterwards. Following actions can be performed due to a batch: -Enter an index -Selection/deselection of files (single, or groups separated by date/time/attribut). -Perform an image- or file-backup Due to safety reasons restores cannot be performed by a batch! %FReferences:%F İMenu-FileİMenu-Fileİ @ ***************** Index-Info ****************** @Index-Info Here you will obtain informations about the volume of the already entered index. You will see the values as they will be seen by GEMAR. That means root entries and TAR-Header will also be added. Do not be surprised if more data will be listed than given by the desktop. %FReferences:%F İMenu-EditİMenu-Editİ @ ***************** Password ****************** @Password To protect your tapes upon undesired access you may provide a password. A tape protected with a password can only be accessed by entering the correct password. Please keep in mind the password and the corresponding username. Tapes will only be coded after having activated the point 'Password' under %FBackupparameter%F in the dialog box. %FReferences:%F İBackup parametersİBackup parametersİ @ ***************** Buffersegmentation ****************** @Puffersegmentierung @Buffersegmentation It is extremly difficult to keep a streamer on streaming during a backup. Therefore, GEMAR offers a variety of settings. An essential feature is the buffersegmentation. It determines the size of the portions that supplies data to the streamer. GEMAR always reserves as much storage as available. This storage will be divided into a number of segments. In turn, those segments will be filled up with data and sent to the streamer. With this, problems due to the collection of data will be released (Binder with many small files). For a first check set the restore buffer at 0 (one segment) and the backup buffer at the size of the inter buffer of your streamer. %FReferences:%F İMenu-OptionsİMenu-Optionsİ @
