= A GREAT MORNING/AFTERNOON/EVENING/NIGHT TO YOU! ======================= Good day and a sincerely warm welcome to "ST NEWS" Volume 9 Issue 1, the first 1993 issue, the ninth Undead One an the 36th in total. As usual, it was finished. Sortof accidentally, this event took place on March 11th 1994, the 42nd birthday of Douglas Adams, and it was a doddle more than ever. This is the first multi-media issue of "ST NEWS", which means you will find more attention to films, CDs, books and concerts this time. As a matter of fact especially in the music department you may find some really hot information. Of course there are still a lot of computer- related things, as well as the usual amount of fiction. I hope you'll enjoy reading this issue's contents and using the plethora of programs that come with it. Below you will find some more details concerning this issue (like how to copy it and what's in it). Have fun reading, Richard Karsmakers a.k.a. Cronos of the Amazing Cracking Conspiracy (ACC) of the Quartermass Experiment (QX) (Editor) P.S. Please take the time to read the "PLEASE READ ME!!!" article in the "Features" pull-down menu, and act to it accordingly. It would mean a lot to me! = WHAT'S IN IT, HECK? =================================================== This issue, as usual, contains things. Quite an amount of them, even. Below you will find a summary of some of the most important bits, the CAPITALIZED parts of which PD library owners are invited to use in their catalogues. ========================================================================= JEFF MINTER'S "NATURE OF THE BEAST" COLUMN! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where Mr. Yak-the-no-longer-extremely-hairy reveals some information about his hottest projects ever - "Llamazap" on the Falcon and "Tempest 2000" on the Jaguar. ========================================================================= AN IN-DEPTH PREVIEW OF "CHROMASTUDIO 24"! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It seems most likely that Floppyshop's "ChromaStudio 24" will be the hottest, fastest, most powerful and almost ridiculously versatile art package ever to appear on an Atari. As a matter of fact, it seems that it will fully justify purchasing a Falcon all on its own accord. ========================================================================= ADVENTURE SOLUTIONS: "TIME QUEST", "DEMONS SEED", "GOLD RUSH", "HERO'S QUEST II" AND LOTS MORE! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why wait for multiple aeons until another magazine chucks out the odd tip on your favourite adventure that you've been stuck on ever since the week after you bought it? "ST NEWS" has offered solutions to almost *all* ST adventures and quite an enormous lot of PC ones as well. You need look no further; check out the "Adventure Solutions Index". If your favourite adventure's not in there then there's quite a chance it's not actually an adventure. As far as I know, Math has still not grown a beard or anything similar. ========================================================================= AN ARTICLE BY ATARI BENELUX' WILFRED KILWINGER EXPLAINING HOW THE GET THE MOST FROM "MULTITOS"! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Atari neglected to tell you all about "MultiTOS" and the many ways in which it can be configured. This article, however, will meet your every need. ========================================================================= SOME INTERESTING PROGRAMS, AMONG WHICH ALL THE LATEST ST EMULATORS FOR YOUR FALCON AND "ST ZIP" 2.4! ========================================================================= A REVAMPED AND EVEN MORE COMPLETE FALCON SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY LIST! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now you can see for yourself what old and recent stuff doesn't work on the Falcon and, vastly more important, what *does*. It is probably the most complete list of its kind, and trustworthy too; most of this stuff is from my own experience. ========================================================================= REVIEWS OF, AMONG OTHER THINGS: "KHAOOHS" (CD), "HARD TARGET" (FILM), "GENEVA" (UTILITY), "HIDEOUS..." (MC DEMO), "SMALL GODS" (BOOK), "PRINCE" (CONCERT), "A.P.B." (LYNX GAME), "DEMOLITION MAN" (FILM), "TRIP: THE DREAMTIME REMIXES" (CD), "KOBOLD" 2.5 (UTILITY), "WINTERSKUGGEN" (CD) AND A WHOLE, *WHOLE* LOT MORE! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- "ST NEWS" is multi-media now, so we've got a multitude of formats to cover now. Aural, oral or whatever other sensory organs, ours got caressed by the stuff covered in this issue. These include films, videos, ST games, Falcon games, Lynx games, CDs, underground demos, application software, concerts, and perhaps one or two other things. ========================================================================= UNBELIEVABLY HOT NEWS ABOUT FORTHCOMING MUSIC, BOOKS AND FILMS! ========================================================================= INTERVIEWS WITH MY DYING BRIDE, ANATHEMA AND PARADISE LOST! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Due to extraordinary circumstances that won't probably be repeated soon, I had the chance to interview these three most major of doom metal bands. ========================================================================= LITERARY BITS! ========================================================================= = NOTES ABOUT COPYING =================================================== I will be brief. Just like the 35 prior issues, "ST NEWS" is about as Public Domain as you can get. Spread it, copy it, sell it (CHEAP if you will), I don't mind. It is important that as many people as possible get this issue, so give it to a friend for his/her birthday! In case you're the owner of a Public Domain library, you are much encouraged to include it in that. I need NO royalties. This is NO licenseware. The disk format is: Tracks : 0-79 Sectors per track : 11 Number of sides : 2 You can copy it with just about any modern disk copier (though "FastCopy" would be a most excellent choice (free plug there)). And anyway, it's not *how* you copy it that's important, as long as you *do* copy it, possible in the *largest* numbers! Be wise and steer clear of expensive PD libraries. And please send a donation now and again if you've enjoyed our efforts. I have received one donation (hi Marinos!) in the last three years or something. = NOTES ABOUT COMPATIBILITY ============================================= Atari (MEGA) ST(E): "ST NEWS" runs on all systems, including those with 512 Kb memory (though 1 Mb minimum is advised). Graphic cards are not supported. Please use medium or high resolution. Atari TT : "ST NEWS" hasn't yet been tested on a TT but should work when launched from either ST medium or ST high resolution. Please bother to let me know of any TT- related (in-)compatibilities. Atari Falcon 030 : "ST NEWS" runs smoothly from any 80-column VGA/RGB/TV resolution with the exception of VGA double ON 2 colours and TV/RGB none-interlaced 2 colours (where it will bomb). Any 40-column resolution (including ST low res compatibility mode) will cause all GEM and VDI draw commands to be limited to the left half of the screen. Also, the file selector needed to specify an ASCII/WP file to be written is usually coloured wrongly and drawn partly off the screen due to GEM not being properly re-initialised. Any suggestions on how to fix these problems? Keeping [ALTERNATE] pressed during booting on a Falcon with VGA monitor connected will cause the program to use ST high resolution mode instead of ST medium (among other things, this slows down the scroller). "ST NEWS" hasn't been tested a on Falcon with SM12x monochrome monitor. MultiTOS : "ST NEWS" will not work properly with MultiTOS. Please disable it. Warp 9 : Exiting "ST NEWS" may freeze the system with "Warp 9" active. This can be fixed by adding the line "ST_NEWS.PRG s0" (turn screen accelerator off) in the "WARP.DAT" automatic configuration file. BlowUp 030 : Exiting "ST NEWS" will cause a return to a distorted screen. This is likely to happen with most extended screen resolution drivers. Please disable them. That's it. No use in reading on any further.
