---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brain Damage is a puzzle game where the aim is to arrange a given set of
pictures into a specified pattern on an 8*8 picture grid. The pictures are
given to you in an initial pattern which you must transform into the
specified pattern within a given number of moves and within a given time
limit. The only way to move a picture on the grid is to shift the entire
row or column that it's in. The pictures may further be rotated,
reproduced or destroyed using `active pictures' (see below).

Prior to playing the game, you are presented with the following options (on
the left-hand side of the screen):

NAME:	Allows you to enter your name using the mouse or joystick.

INT:	(Intelligence.) Denotes the difficulty level of the stages.
(Each difficulty level contains different stages.)
You can set it to one of 3 levels:

MORONIC:	the easiest 10 stages. There are no time or
moves limits at this difficulty level.

The registered version contains 50 MORONIC
				stages.

		      AVERAGE:	the main 10 stages.

The registered version contains 100 AVERAGE
				stages.

INGENIOUS:*** THIS VERSION OF BRAIN DAMAGE DOES ***
*** NOT CONTAIN INGENIOUS STAGES ***

The registered version contains 50 INGENIOUS
				stages.

STAGE:	Allows you to alter the stage at which you will start the
game. You can start the game at any stage that you got up
		to in previous games.

START:	Clicking on this button starts the game ...

SAVE GAME: *** THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THIS VERSION OF ***
		    *** BRAIN DAMAGE ***

LOAD GAME: *** THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THIS VERSION OF ***
		    *** BRAIN DAMAGE ***

HELP: Shows you the pictures which are referred to as `active
pictures' (rotators, transformers & bombs) by this
manual and provides some brief instructions.

TOP SCRS: Shows you the hall of fame (press a mouse button or the
fire button on the joystick to exit).

MUSIC/SOUND FX: *** THIS OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THIS ***
*** VERSION OF BRAIN DAMAGE ***

During the game you are presented with the following information (on the
right-hand side of the screen):

STG:	Specifies the stage you are currently playing.

	SCR:	Specifies your score.

MOVES:	At the MORONIC difficulty level this value specifies the
number of moves you have made while playing the current
stage (the game will terminate if the number of MOVES
		exceeds 999).
At the AVERAGE & INGENIOUS difficulty levels, this value
specifies the number of moves you can still make while
		playing the current stage.

TIME:	At the MORONIC difficulty level this value specifies the
number of seconds that have elapsed since you started
playing the current stage (the game will terminate after
		999 seconds).
At the AVERAGE & INGENIOUS difficulty levels, this value
specifies the number of seconds remaining to complete the
		current stage.

PATTERN: Shows a colour-coded version of the required pattern.
The picture represented by each colour is shown below
the grid with the corresponding colour in a box above
		  it.

You can also access the following options while playing the game:

SOLUTION: Displays the required pattern on the game grid.
The TIME value does not increase while you are examining
the required pattern. The MOVES value decreases by 1
every time you select the SOLUTION option (in the average
		   and ingenious levels only).

	PAUSE: Pauses the game.
The TIME value does not increase while the game is
paused. The MOVES value decreases by 1 every time you
		   pause the game.

	SUICIDE: ...

The rows & columns of the game-grid can be shifted horizontally/vertically
using the numbered buttons around the grid. Clicking on the button above,
below or next to a row/column will shift the corresponding row/column by 1
square in the direction of the arrow on the button. Using the right mouse
button or the fire button on a joystick causes the row/column to shift
repeatedly until the button is released. Using the left mouse button
causes the row/column to only shift once per click.

Apart from `plain pictures', Brain Damage also contains `active pictures'
(click on the HELP button to view these). Active pictures are used to
perform various operations on plain pictures. Active pictures are treated
as empty squares on the grid when it comes to completing a stage. They do
not appear in the SOLUTIONs since they can be placed in any vacant (black)
slot in the game-grid to complete a stage. Active pictures are activated
by moving the mouse pointer over them and pressing the mouse/joystick button.
The following active pictures are available in Brain Damage:

ROTATORS:	Rotators are used to rotate plain pictures in the
vertical & horizontal planes. When you click on a
ROTATOR, the area in which you will be able to move
the mouse pointer will be limited to the pictures
surrounding the ROTATOR. The game will then wait
for you to select a picture to be rotated (by moving
the mouse pointer over it and pressing a mouse/fire
button). Rotations are not allowed on active
pictures and vacant slots on the grid.

TRANSFORMERS:	Clicking on a transformer will transform all the
pictures in the row and/or column it is pointing to
into the picture in the slot it is pointing at.

BOMBS: Destroy the 4 pictures (immediately below, above and
to the left & right of the bomb) surrounding the
			bomb.
