FAMILY TREE JOURNAL TEXT EDITOR Data entry with the editor defaults to insert mode. You may move the cursor with the and keys to any place on the line without disturbing anything. In the insert mode, the and keys move the cur- sor to the beginning or end of the current line if it is not already at that respective position. Typing the or keys when the cursor is already at the beginning or the end of the line will move to the first or last line on the screen. If the cursor is positioned at the first character of the first line, the key will display the first screen in the file. If the cursor is at the last character of the last line, the key will display the last screen in the file. Typed characters will be inserted into the text and all characters to the right of the cursor will shift towards the end of the line. The key will erase the character under the cursor and the key toggle the mode from insert to normal mode. (Normal mode requires that you retype the entire line when you wish to make changes). This editor does not support word-wrap so anything that is forced off of the right end of the line is lost. You may enter foreign characters by holding the ALT key while typing the decimal code (IBM extended ASCII) for the character. This will work for most of the extended charac- ters except those between the values 200 and 219 (some line drawing characters). The and keys will scroll the cursor up and down. The and keys will display the pre- vious or next page of text, except that you will not be able to go forward past any large area of blank lines (usually the end of text). FUNCTION KEYS F1 HELP - Displays help information. F2 NAMES - Display and edit your name list. F3 SEARCH - Search all data files for information. F4 CENTER - Center the text on the current line. F5 INSERT - Inserts a blank line at the cursor. F6 DELETE - Deletes the current line. F8 SAVE - Saves the information for this individual. The key will exit the editor. You must save the in- formation (F8) before you exit or the changes that you have made will be lost. NOTE: You may prefer to use your own editor or word proces- sor to edit this information. The miscellaneous utilities section of the program provides ways to import and export files that may be used by other programs. FAMILY TREE JOURNAL was not intended to be a word processor so this editor only provides minimal flexibility. The only real ad- vantage to using this selection is that it can (theoretically) handle files as large as 1000 Megabytes! Most word processors would choke on a file that big! *******
