PUZZLE BYLINES When solving, before bringing the puzzle up on screen, Crossdown now displays the name of the constructor. Byline information is contained in the XDOWN.BYS file, which is an ordinary non-document text file. Type the name of the puzzle file without the XWD extension in all caps followed by a space and the constructor's name as you wish it to appear, all on one line. Each line must be flush left. For example: PORTSIDE John M. Samson TRIVIA2 Sam Bellotto Jr. These are byline data lines for two puzzles as they appear in the XDOWN.BYS file. Byline data can be listed in any order. Bylines are optional; if the XDOWN.BYS file does not exist, Crossdown simply will not display byline information. OPTIONAL SYMMETRY In Writecross mode, you can now turn the diagonal symmetry "on" or "off" by clicking on the SYM radio button. GO BACK IN AUTOCLUE When using the Autoclue feature to write puzzle definitions, you can now back up to previously input definitions by hitting the PAGEUP key. Any definitions changed or input after hitting the PAGEUP key must be saved in the normal way, by hitting the ENTER key. REBUS PUZZLES In order to accommodate constructors who desire to make "rebus" puzzles, Crossdown now offers a special "rebus" key. When working the grid, hit the plus (+) key to assign a square to the rebus icon. On screen, the square displays a question mark (?) to indicate that it is a rebus square. But in the printouts, rebus squares are empty, facilitating insertion of the correct rebus icon by hand or other means. NOTE: The rebus key is intended to be used by constructors who need to output these puzzles as manuscripts. In "game mode," Crossdown does not support rebus puzzles constructed this way. CLUE NUMBERS When writing definitions, Crossdown now displays the correct clue number in addition to ACROSS or DOWN in the upper right hand corner of the Autoclue window. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Additionally, Autoclue now supports the complete set of Foreign Language and Extended Characters. Generate these characters by holding down the ALT key and pressing 0 (zero) on the numeric keypad, followed by the three other Foreign Language Extended ASCII Characters (128-175) which can be found in any standard ASCII code chart. These characters cannot be generated within the puzzle grid itself. Crossdown puzzle grids permit ONLY letters A to Z, in upper case, according to standard rules. ENHANCED WP FEATURES Autoclue now features a richer set of word processing operations. You may use the left and right arrow keys to position the cursor anywhere on the definition. The delete key now deletes characters to the right of the cursor. Hitting CTRL-Y erases the entire definition. These enhancements make editing much easier. SCAN ENTIRE PUZZLE Before tackling a puzzle, solvers often like to first peruse the clues and their relation to the grid. This is now possible. In Solve Mode, at any time, "click" on the white clue box with the left mouse button. The clue box expands and displays a full column of clues, numbered, beginning with "1 Across." Corresponding numbers also appear in the grid. The mouse cursor disappears. Hit PageDown to display more clues. Hit PageUp to back up one column of clues. The ACROSS clues are in blue. The DOWN clues are in red. You can quit the scan at any time and return to normal Solve Mode by hitting the ESC button. The mouse cursor will reappear. Please note that the new Scan Mode is to be used only for obtaining an overall view of the puzzle clues, logic, and so forth. You cannot solve in Scan. UNINTERRUPTED SOLVING Quitting from a puzzle in Solve Mode no longer takes you out of the program itself. As a result, you can go right on to solving another puzzle or (if you wish) into CONSTRUCT. To quit from CROSSDOWN altogether, first quit out of the puzzle you are currently solving or constructing. This "clears the desktop." Then click on the QUIT radio button again with the left mouse button. HEWLETT PACKARD DESKJET 500C PRINTERS The driver for the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 500C Printer is designed to function with the BLACK INK cartridge loaded. Using this driver with the color cartridge may not work correctly. CANADA $$ WELCOME Canadian neighbors note: probably because of the proximity of Rochester, NY to our northern continental partner, we are happy to accept checks drawn on any Canadian bank! But because of the international exchange rate, the cost is $36.75 in Canadian dollars. Thanks. Sam Bellotto Jr. 02/24/94
