                           Rules of the tournament

The Shaolin Tournament for Martial Arts is more than a simple
exhibition. Each of its combatants has been invited for his extraordinary
skills, and each accepting has wagered his/her very life upon them. The
tournament's structure - as simple as it is ancient - tests all aspects of
a warrior, for only the most worthy may earn the title of Grand Champion.
The tournament first tests a warrior's fighting skill by pitting him against
each of the tournament's other challengers. In all Mortal Kombat battles,
meters on the upper-left and upper-right corners of the screen measure the
health of each warrior. The meters begin each round at full health, but are
reduced with each blow taken. The amount of reduction depends both on the
type of hit and whether or not it was blocked. When a warriors health meter
runs out, he is knocked out and the round is awarded to his opponent.
Should time run out before either combatant is knocked out, the warrior with
the less injury is declared the victor. The first warrior to win two rounds
takes the match and moves on to the next opponent. Sometimes when both
warriors hit each other at the same time when all of their life has ran out
or both warriors have the same amount of damage when time runs out, the
match is declared a draw. If four rounds pass without a winner, both
combatants will be disqualified from the tournament.

An ancient proverb declares a warrior to be his own worst enemy.
Another declares his greatest ally to be knowledge of his weaknesses.

                                The Beginning

Thousands of years ago an order of the wisest men from the Far East
received visions of a dark realm. This realm came to be known as the
OUTWORLD. It was a dark and chaotic and ruled by a vicious emperor. The
wise men knew that travel between the dark realm and Earth would someday be
possible if the conditions were right. The conditions being the unbalancing
of the furies ----negative and positive forces which keep our unstable
universe from collapsing onto itself. Knowing that the eminent Outworld
invasion would prove too much for Earth, they appealed to the Elder Gods.
It was for this reason the Elder Gods created the tournament of Mortal
Kombat. Though this contest, we protect not only the safety of our realm,
but the existence of our souls.

                                 Evil Reborn

For centuries Earth has used Mortal Kombat to defend itself against the
Outworld's Emperor -- Shao Kahn. But Kahn becomes frustrated by failed
attempts at taking Earth though the tournament battle. He decides to enact
a plan which began almost 10,000 years ago. It was during a time in which
Kahn had a queen. Her name was Sindel and her premature death was
devastating. Kahn's shadow priests, lead by sorcerer Shang Tsung, would
make it so Sindel's spirit would someday be reborn - not on the Outworld but
on the Earth realm itself. This unholy act gives Shao Kahn the power to
step though the dimensional gates and reclaim his queen, thus enabling him
to finally seize the Earth Realm.

                                   Conquest

Upon breaching the Portal into Earth, Shao Kahn strips the planet of
all human life. He claims every soul as his own. Slowly the Earth begins
to transform into a part of the Outworld itself. But there are human souls
which Shao Kahn cannot take. These souls belong to the warriors chosen to
represent Earth in a new Mortal Kombat. The warriors are scattered
throughout the planet and Kahn sends an army of fierce Outworld warriors to
find and eliminate them. Some of the Earth's warriors survive the attacks,
but most do not. The remaining few hold the chance at saving all of human
kind.

                                Radien's Creed

You have been chosen to represent Earth in Mortal Kombat. Be
warned. Although your souls are protected against Shao Kahn's evil; your
lives are not. I cannot interfere any longer as your Earth is now ruled by
the Outworld gods.

-These are the words of RAIDEN.

                         Rumors Proven To Be False

Since way before MK 3 ever came out, thousands of rumors have popped
up. And all most every single one are false.

Cyrax = Scorpion?: This is false as Cyrax is 100% robot.
Sektor and Smoke were once humans turned
into robots. It is impossible for Cyrax to
be Scorpion. It is easy to see why people
would think so, as Cyrax is a yellow ninja
                                after Sub Zero.

Goro: Goro's DEAD!!! I am sorry but you cannot
jump through the bottom of the Pit 3 and
into the portal to go fight Goro as the
                                rumors say.

Johnny Cage Transformations: Johnny Cage is dead! These rumors about
him coming out of a grave as a ghost is
completely fake. Daniel Pesina was the
actor that played as Johnny Cage. Pesina's
contract with Williams expired as well as
                                his brothers, Carlos.

Nudealities: Let's go ahead and get this one out of the
way. Nudealities are Finishing Moves in
which female opponents are stripped down
naked and do something very nasty. This
rumor was probably created by some perverted
kids. This rumor is 100% false. Why would
Midway put nude images where they know kids
are going to be? The Senate would be all
over them so much, their heads would spin.
You could never play MK 3 because it would
be banned from every arcade. Ed and John
would be in jail. They are already afraid
of the Senate enough, just look at the
                                quality of MK 3's fatalities.

Raiden Transformations: The only way to see Raiden is to do
                                Nightwolf's Friendship. The rumors about
him being playable in the game and him being
in the Fall update are false.

Variety of UKC's: Look people, there is only ONE Ultimate
Kombat Code. It unveils Smoke as a playable
character. Ultimate Kombat Codes that let
you play as Noob Saibot, Raiden, Johnny
Cage, Ermac, etc. Do NOT exist.

                                  T R I C K S

Animalities: Let your opponent win one round, and then
you win two rounds, perform a mercy, and
then do the correct movement for you
characters Animality. You also have to
perform the Animality in the correct place.

Babalities: Do not hit the BL button on your winning
round. Then perform the correct movement for
the Babality for your character. Your
opponent will turn into a baby. It's good to
try to do a Babality on Round 2 if you have
already won Round 1 because you do not want
to be trying to not hit the block button
throughout the Third and Final Round. The
Babality usually makes your opponent mad.
                                (Anywhere)

Difficulty Select: You can select the difficulty before each
one player game by selecting one of the
towers or battle plans. Your choices are
Novice, which is easy, Warrior, which is
medium difficulty, and Master, the hardest
one. On Revision 1.0 the cursor started on
Master and a lot of people selected Master
on accident. Now on Revision 2.0 and 2.1,
                                the cursor starts on Novice.

Finishing Moves: Every character has the ability to finish
off their opponent after they win a match.
The screen will flash FINISH HIM or FINISH
HER and you will be given around 5 seconds
to perform a finishing move movement. These
are also known as Fatalities, Babalities,
                                Friendships, Animalities, and Pits.

Free Game: When you beat 2.0, press START rapidly on
both sides when the credits roll down for
the actors and characters. When Richard
Divizio's feet in both the costumes of Kabal
and Kano hit the ground, you will go to the
character select screen. You lose your game
after you beat the game. This glitch has
                                been fixed in Revision 2.1.

Free Games: To get unlimited free credits in MK 3, just
find a Revision 2.0 machine that has not had
the Ultimate Kombat Code entered on it
already. Just simply enter the Ultimate
                                Kombat Code. (Explained later)

Friendships: Do not hit the BL button on your winning
round. Then perform the correct movement for
the Friendship for your character. It's good
to try to do a Friendship on Round 2 if you
have already won Round 1 because you do not
want to be trying to not hit the block
button throughout the Third and Final Round.
                                (Anywhere)

Galaga: Play 100 2-Player matches in a row. Then
you will be greeted with the following
                                message:

                         YOU HAVE BEEN TRANSPORTED
                             TO ANOTHER REALM
A REALM WHERE NEITHER THE EARTH WARRIORS
NOR SHAO KAHN HAVE ANY CONTROL
                              BEWARE OF THE
                             REALM. OHCANEP

Galaga Hints: Press HP to shoot from your spaceship.
There are green space ships that come out,
shoot them once and they turn blue. While
they are blue, they come down to try to
capture you. If they do capture you, you
lose that life and the spaceship takes your
old one up to the top of the screen. During
the rest of the round, if you shoot the
spaceship that captured you earlier, you
will then get both of your spaceships to
fight with. Each will be side-by-side
giving you a wider range of fire as one
missile comes out of each ship when you
                                shoot.

Kombos: Kombos are combinations of kicks, punches,
and sometimes special moves. When you do a
Kombo, your opponent can either block it or
get hit by it. It depends on how quick
he/she is. They can also Kombo you, so be
careful. Kombos take off massive amounts of
energy if you get a real good one going.
Kombos are limited because of your RUN Meter
(read on down) After your Kombo is
finished, the screen flashes up how many
hits were in the Kombo and a percentage of
how much damage your opponent lost.

Mercy: On Round 3, after you have won and it says
finish him, Hold down the RUN button and
press D, D, D, and then quickly release RUN.
This will give you opponent just enough
energy to come back to life. There is so
little energy that any hit your opponent
takes will kill them again, even if they
block it. This is necessary to perform an
Animality. However be careful, you can
always lose after you perform the mercy.

Pits: Everyone has their own Pit Movement. On the
Subway stage, the Pit Fatality knocks your
opponent into the background where a subway
train comes by and knocks them over. You
cannot uppercut at anytime during a match at
the Subway stage or your opponent will go
flying through the ceiling. On Shao Kahn's
Tower, you opponent falls through seven
wooden floors into a large amount of spikes.
On the Pit III, your opponent falls for what

elemental bolts make the MK 3 warriors the
fiercest and most ferocious combatants on

Toasty!: Dan Forden is the guy that programs the
sound for all the MK games. Sometimes,
when an uppercut is delivered, he will pop
out and say TOASTY! In MK 3 he also says
Frosty! now. To get him to say Frosty!,
freeze your opponent with Sub Zero when they
                                are in danger.

The Ultimate Kombat Code allows you to select Smoke, Smoke randomly
appears on the VS. Screen, but you cannot select him. After you enter the
Ultimate Kombat Code, you will no longer have to enter it for the rest of
the life of the machine, just as if he was a normal character. The only way
for the kode to reset itself is for the arcade operator to replace the CMOS
battery. To enter it, you have to place the corresponding keys. When the
game asks you for the Ultimate Kombat Code, you have to press Player 1's HP
Button once, Player 1's BL Button 9 times (or U + 1 time, see below), and
Player 1's HK Button twice. On the Player 2 side, you have to hit the HP,
LP, and BL Buttons twice each, and the LK Button 3 times and the HK 4 times.
It is now hard to find a single MK 3 machine that doesn't already have the
Ultimate Kombat Code entered.

WARNING: YOU COULD GET KICKED OUT OF ARCADES BY PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING
MANEUVERS.

First, You must find a Revision 2.0 machine. Whenever you enter the
Ultimate Kombat Code on a 2.0 machine, the machine sets itself to free play
automatically. But nowadays everyone has already entered the Ultimate
Kombat Code on every machine. So what you have to do is reset the Ultimate
Kombat Code. To do this, you have to beat the game, do the Free Credit
Trick which gives you your game back that was explained above, then with
your free game beat some more computer opponents, and then lose. After you
lose, reset the machine by flipping the little switch on the top of the
cabinet on the left side. When it boots up, the ROM's will have errors, so
they will reset the CMOS Battery (The Internal Clock) Then they will set to
how they were when the machine was brand new. Just go and lose and re-enter
the Ultimate Kombat Code. Almost every arcade has upgraded to 2.1 because
of this. Be careful whenever the arcade operators walk by.

The Throw

The throw is performed by pressing the F + LP buttons. It is the
cheapest move in the game. When you throw someone, it will usually make the
other person very angry. If you do not mind what people think about you and
you don't care if you get beat up, press and hold the RUN button, run
towards your opponent, throw them, then move the joystick to the opposite
direction while still holding the RUN button and run over and throw them
again. Just repeat and you should win. There is only one known way to get
out of this. It was discovered by Rick Stumpf. What you do is you Jump
back after a throw. Most people prefer to disable throws in a two player
match by using the Kombat Code. If someone that you know that they know the
Kombat Code to disable Throws and they don't do it, that gives you the green
light to do the maneuver described above. However, don't do it if the other
person looks like a beginner that doesn't know about the Code.

How not to be called cheap

If you are someone who is getting tired of people calling you cheap,
follow this Guideline on fixing your cheap ways.

1. Always Disable throws
2. NEVER! I repeat, NEVER pick Kabal.
3. If the other person does not disable throws, don't throw them!
4. Never do the same move more than 3 times in a row, like the sweep.

If you do that, people should quit calling you cheap! Also, beating
the game with Cyrax, Smoke, Kabal, or Sub Zero is not really considered
beating the game.

The RUN Button

The RUN Button is the yellow button to the left and down to the LP
Button. It is lined up perfectly with the LP, BL, and HK Buttons. There
is a little meter under your name and the health bar. This meter measures
how much RUN Energy you have. The RUN button allows you to RUN towards your
opponent fast. You have to Hold F while running. If you don't, you will
not RUN, just run out of RUN energy.

Using a move that uses Up

When a move calls for you to hit U, you may hold BL first to make it
easier. Also, when a move calls for you to do a 360, you may hold BL first
to make it easier. However, you have to release the BL button if you have
to hit an attack button at the end to execute the move. Such as Stryker's
Pit- You press and hold the BL button and press F, U, U, then you release
the BL button and hit the HK button.

Endings

With each character, you will see an ending. Endings are the story
lines that are flashed up on the screen after you beat the game. Each
character has there own unique ending.

Fatality Distances

After Fatality listings in this FAQ, you will see a set of parentheses,
in the parentheses it will tell you the distance to stand at to do the
fatality.

(Close) Right Next to your opponent
(Sweep Distance) The distance in which you become out of range
to connect with a Sweep (B + LK)
(Half Screen) Self Explanatory. Stand half of a screen away
                             from your opponent.
(Far) Stand all the way on the other side of the
                             screen.

The Balcony: Off in the background, you will see a green glowing pit.
There are large statues of Motaro to the far right and
left. The green glowing pit seems to lead down into
the Mouth of the statue with the souls in it in the
Soul Chamber. You can get to this stage from the Soul
                     Chamber by uppercutting.

The Bank: There is a stone floor with symbols on it. You can see
windows that view out to the city. It doesn't look to
much like a bank because it has walls with windows and
no indication of a bank. On each wall there are lights.
You can be knocked though the ceiling here to the
                     Rooftop stage.

The Bridge: You can see the cityscape in the back. Plenty of
newspapers and other litter blow in the wind. It looks
like the bottom of the Rooftop stage. It also appears
that this stage is right next to the street stage.

The Graveyard: This is nothing but a graveyard with a bunch of
tombstones. The night sky is a very dark purple. A
lot of the tombstones have some interesting names like,
Boon, Tobias, Beran, Michicich, Cage, etc. They all
seem to have died on April 1, 1995, which is April
Fool's day. There are also some tombstones with the MK
                     Dragon logo on top.

The Pit 3: This is a bridge with spikes on the side of the
walkway. There are floating greenlamps in the
background. There are big statues of faces in the back
and sides of the stage. In this stage you knock them
down into the pit, when you hit the bottom there are
big turning blades that will cut you up into lots of
                     pieces.

The Rooftop: The rooftop is a cityscape with Shao Kahn's tower in
the very back with the portal circling the top. It
appears that you can knock them down off the building
to the bottom of the building. There is a big dragon
logo on the floor in the center of the stage.

Shao Kahn Tower: This is a bell tower, you can see out the windows to
the city. Everything is made of wood. And you see the
moon in the background. Performing your character's
Pit Fatality movement on this stage will knock them
down through seven wooden floors. At the bottom, there
are a bunch of spikes that your opponent lands in.

Soul Chamber: There is a large figure of an open monster mouth with
greenish smoke moving in a line from top to bottom.
You can see some faces peek out of it at times. There
are some giant skull figures with their mouths open.
There are spikes on the edge of the walkway that look
like teeth. There are also a few statues of the
MK 2 Sorcerers. You can get knocked through the
ceiling here up to the Balcony.

Smoke's Stage: To fight on Smoke's Stage, you have to enter the Kombat
Code at the Character Match up in a Two Player game.
The stage looks just like the bridge with spikes in The
Pit 3. Instead of Floating Lamps and skulls in the
                     background, you see the Portal.

The Street: This is where you fight after going through the Subway
Ceiling. This stage has paper and litter blowing in
the wind in the background. This stage appears to be
at the bottom of the rooftop stage.

The Subway: You're down on the subway tracks in the depot. The
overhead lights are flickering on and off. When you
uppercut your opponent, he/she gets smashed up into the
street and then you follow. You cannot uppercut if you
want to do the Pit Fatality on this stage. By doing
the Pit Fatality, your opponent gets uppercuted up, as
if it were a normal uppercut in a normal game, but
instead of you following up behind him/her, he/she
lands in the background on the Subway tracks and a
Subway Train comes by and knocks them over. A real
                     crowd pleaser.

The Temple: There is a large stained glass window in the back with
the MK Dragon Logo in it. There is a red cloth draped
over the altar that has a gold MK Dragon Logo on it.
There are red candles in the foreground.

Motaro----------------------------------------------------------------------

Played by: A Clay Figurine

Motaro is the first boss that you face. He belongs to the Centaurian
Race. The Centaurians are Half Human, Horse monsters with a steel tail. He
looks just like a Human, Horse, and some type of dinosaur rolled into one.
He can be very cheap with his teleporting and fireballs. Projectiles either
disappear or bounce back at you so don't use them. Jump Kick him, and he
will fall back. While he is laying back, run over to him and do a super
Kombo. You have to be quick or he will grab you and hit you. Run in on him
when he jumps up and throws the fireball from his tail and Kombo him.
Whenever you start a Kombo on him, if he is blocking the combo, in the
middle of the combo he will quit blocking and your last hits from the Kombo
hit him. There are mid points to some Kombos in which he can grab you in
the middle of your Kombo. The only known character that this happens with
is Sub Zero. You can also walk backwards and do a jump kick whenever he
jumps up, then hold Back. When he gets up, he will jump up again for you
to jump kick.

Shao Kahn-------------------------------------------------------------------

Played by: Brian Glynn

Shao Kahn He is a lot harder to defeat him than before. He still wears
the same outfit but is now taller and has many new moves. He doesn't taunt
you as much but now does more often in Revision 2.1, and uses a big steel
mallet to hit you with. He still has his Shoulder Butt and a new Knee
Uppercut. He also has a fireball just like Kabal's in the way that it comes
from his head. You can beat him with Kabal by Holding D + BL. Whenever he
does his Knee Uppercut, Do a Spin. This will leave him spinning in the air.
Hit HP, HP, HP, B, B, HP. This will hit him with three HP's and a Fireball.
When ever he taunts you, spin him and do a Super Kombo. With characters
like Sektor and Liu Kang and any other character with a fast projectile can
beat him easily by using the fast projectile. With Cyrax, all you have to
do is throw the net over and over again. But be careful, he can do a Knee
Uppercut right through your net. Do the same with Sub Zero.

Noob Saibot-----------------------------------------------------------------

Played by: Richard Divizio

He's back and can be fought by a Kombat Kode on the VS screen. The
winner on round one gets to fight him for one round. He is now a shadow of
Kano, instead of Scorpion like in MK 2. We haven't seen any moves for him
yet. His name comes from Ed Boon and John Tobias by spelling both of their
last names backwards.

After both people select their character in a two-player match, you
come to a VS. Screen. At the bottom of the VS. Screen, you will see six
boxes lined up with Dragon icons in them. The six symbols represent secret
codes which can have subtle or dramatic effects on game play.

Each button causes the symbol in the corresponding box to change to
the next icon in a predetermined order. For example, pressing Player 1's
LP button once will change the dragon in the first box into a MK symbol;
pressing it a second time will change it to the third icon in the sequence
(a Yin Yang) and so on. Pressing a button more than nine times will cause
the order of icons to start over; in other words, pressing a button that
corresponds to a box with a skull symbol, will change it back to the
original Dragon icon. The chart below shows the order in which the symbols
appear. In some codes, you have to press a button 9 times. The VS. Screen
doesn't stay up for long, so you would have to go fast. Fortunately, you
can reverse the order of the icons by holding U on the joystick on your
side. So instead of pressing a button 9 times, you can hold U and press it
once.
