------------------------------- THE COMPETITION - BLITZ BASIC 2 ------------------------------- Blitz BASIC 2 is the new wonder basic from Vision/Acid Software, currently generating the amount of enthusiasm that AMOS did when news of it was first released. Amiga enthusiast `Dan' gives it the once over. PROJECT BUZZBAR --------------- What do you get if you cross Asteroids, Defender and Space Invaders? Project Buzzbar, that's what. Programmed completely in Blitz Basic 2, this is one of the most addictive games I've ever had the pleasure to play - and written in BASIC to boot!. You control a little ship and have to rid the planets surface of aliens, whilst collecting the little men (Defender style). The graphics are simple but fit the game well and, in these sort of games, excellent graphics aren't really needed. Like the graphics, sound has taken a backseat to playability as well. It's highly original and makes for a completely brilliant blast. Quite superb. Rating - 92% Comment - Marginally better than most AMOS P.D but not as good as Brian Bell's Charlie Chimp. DEFENDER -------- This is definately one of the best coin-ops if not, dare I say, the best. Computer conversions are a common site throughout the many P.D libraries, and it also appeared full price. Programmed by Jeff "Lamma" Minter it utilised a bizarre mouse control system - come on, it's a shoot-em-up!!!!!!!! However, I loved this version. It's literally perfect, everything from the coin-op is there. Defender really is the pinacle of playability. Rating - 97% Comment - Blitz BASIC kicks ass Defender style! ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE ----------------- What do you get if you take Operation Thunderbolt and change the graphics? Complete crap that's what. Whilst Defender and Project Buzzbar were addictive and extremely playable and original, this is just a plain old shoot-em-up. Even now people still chuck this style of shoot-em-up out with almost every movie licence, and on the consoles you get a placky gun as well..... WOW!!!!! As you can probably tell I didn't like this game, but then It's not to say I didn't enjoy a two minute blast. Zombie Apocalypse just hasn't got what it takes. Rating - 56% Comment - All AMOS is better than this, surely! All in all AMOS users have something to worry about. However [how come there's always a `However' - Ed] it should be noted that ALL of these games were written by the authors of Blitz BASIC and that these guys are professional games programmers. Don't throw AMOS away just yet!!!!
