Upper Disk Tools is an Amiga software package designed to help the user to handle problems that he may have with AmigaDOS disks. One of the programs of the package is a file retrieval program named Recovery. About Recovery... Recovery is a program that is based on a new concept to recover deleted or lost files from either corrupted or normal disks. This new concept is based in a method that is a novelty in the way that deleted files can be retrieved from disks. Using this new method, Recovery provides facilities that normal file recovery programs would never be able to provide. Files are recovered from disks through a new virtual AmigaDOS device named REC:, that is mounted by Recovery. Each scannable disk drive has a directory within the REC: device with the same name. The scannable disk drives can be floppy drives or hard disk partitions which includes those formated with newer file systems Directory Cached and International. Once the user scans any of these directories, the program starts analysing the respective AmigaDOS disk drive and builds that disk's directory tree inside the scanned directory. The files found during the scanning process, are placed in specially named directories according to their category. These categories can be, normal deleted files, deleted files without parent directories and files without headers. The brilliance of the concept, is that the users can retrieve the files with simple copy procedure from the REC: to anywhere else, using either CLI, the Workbench, or their favourite directory utility program. Even backup programs can be used to retrive files of any size to floppies. --- - Retrieves files from AmigaDOS disks, including damaged or corrupted ones. - Supports all file systems upto AmigaDOS V3.1 even when run under AmigaDOS V2.04. - Very fast disk scan method for deleted files. - Commodity like user interface window to configure options. - Context dependant AmigaGuide based on-line help. - Locale language support for internationalization. --- Comments... Everything is so transparent that it is easily possible to read or even execute any deleted file directly through REC: device, even without having to copy that file to elsewhere. This file recovery program is the way it is meant to be. If you know how to deal with Workbench, the CLI, or a directory utility, you know how to recover your files with this program. Makes good use of the way the operating system was designed to provide users with the power they need to save them from file loss. It really is a great idea to use the loadable filesystem handlers as a way to recover files. Michael Sinz - former Commodore-Amiga Software Engineer. --- Nice! I really like it. I've only played with it for a second, but it looks great. Now I've got to wait until I accidently delete my source again ;-) Nico François - well known Amiga developer. --- Recovery is a straight-forward, easy to use system for recovering deleted files. It is much faster than previous programs of this type as well, since you can tell it to only scan currently unallocated blocks (the most likely place to find a deleted file). With its drive locking mechanism, you are also assured of not overwriting the file you are trying to recover, while still being able to read other files/data from the drive. James Cooper from SAS Institute --- Another program in this package is DSBackup (Disk Structure Backup). About DSBackup... This program is meant to allow relevant information about the structure of a disk, to be saved for later retrieval for instance in the case of a disk crash. DSBackup can backup the information present in a disk's Rigid Disk Block that conforms to the standard Rigid Disk Block as defined by Commodore. The Rigid Disk Block is a block in the beginning of a disk that is able to autoboot. This block is where the information about the partitions of a disk is stored. --- Availability Upper Disk Tools will be fully available since the 1st of November in the best UK Amiga software shops or can be purchased directly from: Upper Design Apartado 391 3800 AVEIRO Portugal Internet: etmall@zeus.ci.ua.pt The recommend retail price is £20 + VAT (where applicable) + Post & Packaging when purchased directly from Upper Design. --- Distributors Upper Design is currently looking for distributors in other countries besides UK.
