Startup Sound v1.3 ญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญญ by Pierre ROUBLOT / PiRou Soft! 1.What is it? A very simple program that plays any IFF sound sample you wish when your Workbench is loaded, just like Windzzz 95 does for example. Now we can have it too. Of course it is FREEWARE(but if it delights you at every boot, you can write to me,can't you?) 2.Installation Just put the StartupSound executable in your WBStartup drawer,or start it from your "S:User- Startup" script,if you wish. 3.What to do then? When you'll run the program for the first time,it'll ask you which sample you wish to play at every startup, with an ASL requester. It'll even play the sample once to see if it works. YOU ALWAYS OUGHTA CHOOSE AN IFF SAMPLE (AND NOT A .WAV ONE OR ANYTHING ELSE),else StartupSound won't play anything of course. Please note that converting .WAV to .IFF is quite simple. Also, please choose a sample whose size is less than 128k (else it simply won't work). And next time you'll run StartupSound,it'll play the IFF sample you chose. ->It couldn't be easier, could it? 4.I want to change my startup sample now! OK,let's imagine you put a fine belch sample to make your little brother laugh. But while your brother is at school you might wish to hear anything else each time your Amiga reboots after a Guru(do you know Blitz Basic?). So you must know that the StartupSound preferences file can be found in your "sys:prefs/envarchive/" drawer Now if you want to change the sample, simply delete the startupsound.prefs file. Then you'll just have to lauch StartupSound again(or to reboot of course) to chose a new one. 5.I have no IFF Sample If you have no HD and no more space on your Workbench floppies for a sample, you still can use StartupSound.Put it in your WBStartup, delete the prefs file if it exists and run StartupSound. Now,instead of choosing a real sample name, enter the path+name of a file that doesn't exist. I mean, for example: "Ram:fake" if you have no file named "fake",of course,in your ram disk. Then, instead of playing a sample,StartupSound will synthesize and play a simple (and ugly) sine-wave sound on startup. Startup Sound is the smallest program on Earth and it shouldn't be too buggy. In fact I think three problems may appear: - Startup Sound doesn't play the sample. It prefers showing an empty error requester:are you sure the sample is an IFF sample? If not, don't throw it away, convert it!(you know what to do!). - The sample is a genuine IFF sample, and yet Startup Sound plays its ugly sine-wave sound instead of it: are you sure the sample size is really <128k ? - Startup Sound does play the whole sample but it sounds somewhat jerky: well you probably installed some program it doesn't like on your system, like EXCHANGE for example: you must make a choice now: delete Exchange or delete Startup Sound. For myself, I kept Startup Sound because there's nothing like hearing a sample when the Workbench is loaded. 7.Future ญญญญญญญญ In the next version, you'll use tooltypes instead of creating/deleting the .prefs file! And tooltypes filter control.Coming Soon? Well, you guessed it,PiRou Soft is me alone. Apart from a fine adventure game on Amstrad CPC(not released yet but maybe one day for your favourite CPC emulator?),I am the proud father of a few things that you should be able to find on the Aminet: - Washing Machine: a easy-to-use and accurate picture scaling tool. You are allowed to laugh but I use it all the time. - pIROU Special: the coolest gadget set around for UrouHack, inspired by the pOS design. - Alien NewIcons vol.1: Some of the best NewIcons around for NewIcons4.1, mostly adapted from Linux or Win95,but THESE ONES are good. - Alien NewIcons vol.2: Only original Amiga stuff,in the NewIcons style this time. 9.Contact ญญญญญญญญญ No E-Mail yet but sending a little postcard or a letter or MILK chocolate can be fine from time to time(remember than if you are using Startup Sound, you are using it daily, at every boot!).
