This software is provided by FirstNet Services to make 'Getting onto the Net' as simple as possible for Amiga Users. All we ask is that you read these instructions as carefully as possible, as the whole package is very complex but has been compiled with your needs in mind. It may help if you print this documentation. The whole system has been tested thoroughly, and has been reduced to the absolote minimum in terms of disk space required. To prevent any errors during installation, we have opted NOT to use the normal Installer. Instead, all the software required will be installed to one directory for ease of use. You will be taken through each step of the actual 'customising' of @{b}3@{ub} very small files. These files will need to be changed for your personal configuration. We can take no responsibility for loss of data under any circumstances, and strongly advise that every applicable section of this document is read thoroughly. @{b}You should also BACK-UP your disks@{ub}. It may be a good idea to PRINT OUT the sections which explain the file changes required. Thanks for listening - Kev Kitching :-) @endnode @node REQUIREMENTS "Minimum Requirements for this Package" The following equipment is essential to allow the use of this software:- @{" Modem " link Modem} Fairly obvious ? @{" Amiga " link Amiga} Computer running Workbench 2.1 or higher. The following equipment is recommended:- 68020 or higher CPU (yes, Web Browsers need Speeeeeed !) v34 Modem As much ram as you can manage (8mb recommended) @endnode @node INSTALLATION "Installation of the Software" @{b}Installation@{ub} ~~~~~~~~~~~~ You will notice that the installer is very simple. This will allow the software to be installed effortlessly, and with no problems on your system. Simply click on the Install icon and then click the appropriate buttons! @{b}OPTIONS@{ub} ~~~~~~~ Some of you will have used the Commodore Install Disk on your system. This will give you two partitions named WB_2.x: (or WB_3.x:) and Work: If your system has been set-up in this way, select the WB_2.x: or WB_3.x: button when prompted. Others may have the standard DH0: & DH1: partitions. If you have, click on the DH0: button when prompted. @{b}FAILURE TO SELECT THE CORRECT INSTALLATION WILL MEAN PROBLEMS!@{ub} ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But we're not that silly. Are we ? @endnode @node MODEM To use this software you MUST have a modem ! Various types are available on the market, but it is recommended that you use the fastest that you can afford - if only to save money on phone bills. A 28800bps modem takes only half the time to access & download files as a 14400bps model ! The software has been tested with the following modems:- @{" Supra v32bis 14400 " link 14400} @{" USRobotics 14400 " link 14400} @{" Supra v34 28800 " link 28800} @{"USRobotics v34 28800" link 28800} @{" Motorola v34 28800 " link 28800} If you own one of the above units, and are running a 68020 or higher CPU, then you @{b}WILL NOT@{ub} need to change as many files provided in this package. You will be asked what speed your modem is! However, your SerialPrefs (in Workbench) SHOULD be set to 57600 for the serial port speed & the buffer should be set at maximum ! Some of you may not be able to set a maximum speed higher than 31250. In this case, if you have Workbench 2.1 - use the SerialPrefs from that. It allows a higher Amiga to Modem speed ! (if you haven't got it - get it !) For any problems see the @{" Support " link SUPPORT} section. @endnode @node SUPPORT If you require Technical Support for this package, contact:- Kev Kitching 0113 294 4224 (Between 10.00hrs & 17.00hrs Mon - Fri) E-Mail: kevk@firstnet.co.uk Please have the following details ready when requesting support:- AMIGA - Model, CPU, Ram & Workbench version number, SerialPrefs settings. MODEM - Model, Rom revision if known. Specific problems with program modules should be referred to the authors concerned. ie: If you have a problem with Thor, you should contact Ultima Thule ! (Although help @{b}will@{ub} be given if you cannot contact them !) @endnode @node AMIGA This software will work with @{b}ALL@{ub} Amigas which have the following specification:- Kickstart & Workbench: 2.04 2.05 3.0 3.1 Minimum Memory: 2mb (Mosaic & Thor will JUST run!) 4mb (recommended). To view Images with Mosaic, either AGA or a 24bit graphic card is required to enable Workbench to run in 256 colours. Mosaic is also more stable running in 256 colours. (Looks better too!) You can @{b}STILL@{ub} use mosaic in less colours, but some aspects of the Web Pages will not be visible ! @{b}AGA or 24bit cards are NOT essential@{ub}. But they sure help ! @{b}This version of AMosaic will NOT work with Kickstart 2@{ub} A text based Web-Browser has been included instead. To install this simply double click on InstallWB2 @{b}AFTER@{ub} you have installed the rest of the software! (You will need Disk4 of this set). The installer will delete mosaic from the "Internet" drawer and replace it with Lynx. (This was a late addition to give WB2 users a way of accessing the 'Web'). @{b}Hard Disk is essential !@{ub} This package will @{b}NOT@{ub} run from floppies ! You will need 1mb free on your sys: partition (Mosaic stores its history !) 5mb free on your main partition (Main Package goes there !) The more newsgroups that you join, the more space you will need to have documents, mail etc ! If you are getting tight on space, now is the time to either get a larger hard drive or start 'weeding out' those old files you don't use ! Any problems ? See the @{" Support " link Support} section ! @endnode @node HISTORY @{b}History@{ub} ~~~~~~~ This package was put together after seeing what other software was available with other Service Providers. It was felt that other packages were neither easy to install nor let the user do anything other than 'ftp' files. You, the user, had to get the software yourself ! How do you know that what you are downloading is any good ? What do you do if you don't speak fluent Unix ? What do you do when you've pulled out the rest of your hair ? Hence this package ! You have the software to do MOST of the things that have been 'hyped' in the press. World Wide Web ? - no problem. E-Mail & Newsgroups ? - no problem. This software started taking shape in December 1995, and was configured by 1st January 1996. The Custom Installation Routine was written 28 Jan 1996 - the 4am mix! It would have been released in December '95 but I decided to use the AmigaGuide documentation rather than a simple text file. This makes everything easier to 'get to grips with'. Also, @{b}permission had to be obtained from the authors ! @{ub} (Which is why you CANNOT duplicated any of this package !) Also, everything had to be tested thoroughly ! (I have seen another 'kit' which allows easy access to the net. That one needs LOTS of messing around with to get it to work !) This package as it stands is for your personal use only. It uses Dynamic IP Addressing. No changes will need to be set within the software in this case ! @{b}This is release v2.02 for Amiga Format@{ub} We reserve the right to change modules/content at anytime. (It's called progress). Please report any problems or suggestions for improvement to:- Kev Kitching kevk@firstnet.co.uk @endnode @node SMILEYS @{b}Smileys ? What are smileys ?@{ub} ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Smileys are a way of expressing feelings or emotions on the net. These are the more common ones:- :-) Smile ;-) Wink :-D Big Smile :-)) Very Happy B-) Evil Grin >:-) Evil Grin :-X Lips are sealed (Not telling) }:-) Devilish :^) Tongue in cheek O:-) Saint %-) Drunk :-O Shocked :-( Sad These are only a few of the more popular ones ! The authors of AmiTCP have stressed that they will NOT provide support for this unregistered version. I will therefore provide ALL initial support if required. Please register each module with the respective authors. Their details can be found within this document. @endnode
