Maps and Legends REFERENCE GUIDE The Reference Guide contains a list of the main features of the Maps and Legends program and a brief description of the way they work. ABANDON: Use this selection on the File menu to abandon the file you have loaded. The original file will be reloaded from the disk. The name of the file that will be loaded is the same as the one that appears as the window title. BROAD: Use this option on the Drawing Tools dialog under the Options menu to select the largest size for the pen, eraser, and text annotation. COLOR: Use the Color menu bar selection to choose a color for drawing, erasing, filling and annotating your map. Click in the white box in front of the color you are selecting. CONTROL PANEL: Use the Control Panel desk accessory to change the colors on the Color menu. When you load a program from disk, the picture will have the same colors as when it was saved. However, if these differ from the default colors on the Control Panel, the colors will be reset to the Control Panel default colors when you open the Control Panel. DEGAS: A graphics and drawing program from Batteries Included which can load, change, color, fill, label and enhance your maps in any resolution. High-res maps are stored with a .PI3 extender, medium-res with .PI2 and low-res with .PI1. The saved Cartographer map is slightly smaller than the full Degas screen but you can fill the extra area easily with color or pattern. DESK: Desk is the menu bar selection used to read About Maps... and to access the Desk Accessories that you have installed on your TOS disk. The accessories that you may want to use are the Control Panel, Install Printer, and Fonts. DRAWING TOOLS: Use this selection from the Options menu to choose the Pen, Eraser, or Fill functions and the size of the pen, eraser, and letters for annotation. ERASE MAP: Use this selection on the Options menu to clear the screen before starting a new map. You can draw one map on top of another if you click on "Cancel" when the erase- map warning appears on the screen. Erase Map resets the tool selection to pen, the pen size to fine and the color to black. ERASER: Choose Eraser to erase a portion of the screen. The cursor changes to a small square the size of the area that is erased when you press the left mouse button. There are three eraser sizes: fine, medium, and broad. Be sure to choose the Page 23 Maps and Legends color for the eraser from the Color menu before using the eraser. The color should be the background color that you want to appear. ESC: Escape key; press it to halt the drawing of a map and regain mouse control to continue. FILE: File is the menu bar selection used to save and retrieve your maps. The menu selection Quit is used to end a session with Maps and Legends and return to the GEM Desk Top. FILL: Use the Fill drawing tool selection to select the fill function. This fills in an area of the map with the color and fill pattern that you have chosen from the Color and Fill menus. FINE: Use this option on the Pen Selection dialog under the Options menu to select the smallest size for the pen, eraser and text annotation. GRATICULE: A network of parallels and meridians on a map or chart. This is a toggle function. A check will appear in front of it on the Options menu when it is selected. LOAD: Use Load to retrieve a map from your data disk. The Item Selector dialog will appear on the screen. Click on the map in the directory then click on the OK button to load the map. LOCATE MODE: Use this selection from the Options menu to read geographic coordinates from the map. This is a toggle function. A check will appear in front of it on the Options menu when it is selected. See the section on Locate Mode in the main manual. MEDIUM: Use this option on the Pen Selection Dialog under the Options menu to select the middle size for the pen, eraser, and text annotation. OPTIONS: Use this menu bar selection to chose a map projection and to access the Pen Selection, Erase Map, Locate, Graticule, and State Boundaries selections. OVERLAY: Choose this selection from the Files menu to add more coordinates to your map from other database files. The Item Selector dialog will appear on the screen. Select a coordinate data file and it will be drawn with the projection and scale of the map drawn most recently. See the Overlay section of the manual for more information. PATTERN: Use the Pattern menu bar selection to choose a fill pattern for filling an area on the map. Click in the white box in front of the color you are selecting. Page 24 Maps and Legends PEN: Choose Pen to draw on the screen. Three pen sizes are available: fine, medium and broad. PRINT: You can print a map on a compatible graphics printer by simultaneously pressing the [Alternate] and [Help] keys with the map on the screen. If the picture is not printed correctly you can change the printer setup by selecting Install Printer under the Desk item on the menu bar. You can also print a map by loading it into the Degas program and using its print option. QUIT: Use this selection on the File menu to return to the GEM Desk Top. RESOLUTION: You can draw a map in any resolution - low, medium or high - depending on the number of colors you want and the clarity of the features you wish. When you save a map, an extender is automatically added which defines that resolution (.PI1 for low-res, .PI2 for medium and .PI3 for high-res). SAVE: Use this menu selection under File to save a map that you have previously loaded from disk or to resave a file that you have continued to work on after saving it using Save As... The map will be saved in the file with the name shown as the window title. If you want to save it under another name use the Save As... selection on the File menu. SAVE AS: Use this menu selection under File to save a new map. Type the file name for the map then click on the OK button. STATE BOUNDARIES: Make this selection before drawing a map if you want to include the boundaries of the states within the United States on the map. This is a toggle function. A check will appear in front of it on the Options menu when it is selected. TEXT MODE: You can type legends and annotations on the map by selecting Text Mode from the Options menu.
