Da Vinci Tutorial #3: Using the filter drawing mode. By Stephen White The following functions will be demonstrated by this tutorial: Running Da Vinci's art program. Loading a picture. Using the ellipse "to brush" option. Selecting a palette color. Using the filter drawing mode. Using freehand draw. Introduction: This tutorial was designed to demonstrate how to use a few of Da Vinci's features to create a simple landscape, with the emphasis of this tutorial being on how to use Da Vinci's filter drawing mode. Each step of this tutorial is explained in great detail, but don't bother reading the entire description of a step which you already know how to do. For example, how to select a palette color is explained in this tutorial. If you already know how to select a palette color, then just select the specified palette color and skip to the next step. For a more thorough description of any of Da Vinci's functions, refer to the proper section in Da Vinci's manual. Using the filter drawing mode: Step 1. Run Da Vinci's art program. To run Da Vinci from Desktop, insert disk 1 into a disk drive. Open a directory of that drive. This is done by double clicking on the drive's icon. If a directory of that drive is already open, then press the 'esc' key on the keyboard so that the window will show what is on disk 1. Now, double click on the program called DAVINCI.TOS. Step 2. Select teh disk submenu. If the icons are not visible, then press the space bar on the keyboard. Click on the disk icon using the right mouse button. The disk submenu should appear. Step 3. Load the picture called INTRUDER.IFF. To load a picture, click with the mouse on the "load" button. A file selector will appear. On the left side of the file selector, there should be a directory of what is currently on disk 1. On disk 1, there should be a subdirectory called PICTURES. Double click with the mouse on PICTURES. The directory should change so that now you are looking at what is inside of the PICTURES subdirectory. There should be a picture called INTRUDER.IFF. Double click on INTRUDER.IFF. Step 4. Select the ellipse submenu. Click on the ellipse icon using the right mouse button. The ellipse submenu should appear. Step 5. Select the "to brush" option. Click on the "to brush" icon (or press the 'q' key on the keyboard). Step 6. Select one of the green palette colors. The greens are organized from darkest to lightest. Pick a green from the middle of the selection of greens. The current palette colors are displayed above the main strip of icons on the menu. To select a palette color, simply click with the left mouse button on the desired color. Step 7. Draw a small ellipse on the picture. Move the mouse pointer on top of the picture. Press and hold down the left mouse button. Now, while holding down the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer away from where you first clicked the mouse button. A filled ellipse will appear. When the ellipse is at the desired size, release the mouse button. Step 8. Select the drawing mode submenu. Click with the right mouse button on the drawing mode icon (the icon looks like a brush with an 'm'). The drawing mode submenu should appear. Step 9. Select the filter drawing mode. Click on the "filter" button (or press the 'F9' key on the keyboard). Step 10. Turn off the menus. The menus can be toggled on and off by pressing the space bar. Step 11. Draw over the robot. Notice that the robot turns green under your brush. The filter drawing mode functions by using the h (hue) of the current palette color and the s & v (saturation and volume) of each color under the brush to develop a new color. If the desired new color exists in the current palette, then the desired new color is drawn over the color under the brush. The filter drawing mode is used to modify the color of something while still retaining its brightness.
