     PRIME¿ is based on an ancient practice of reading numbers and
letters in terms of their "vibrations".  Early mathematicians and
philosophers considered numbers to be something more than things
to figure with.  They saw in them a kind of elemental and
irreducible clue to the universe as a whole.  The alphabet was 
viewed in a similar way since each letter could be reduced to a
single digit according to its position in the alphabet.  It
too could provide a clue to greater things.  The attitude was
