VGB-Max : The Ultimate Front-end for VGB-DOS! * Tips for Optimization * ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's some tips to get the biggest bang for the buck: 1. If you're going to search all drives, try defragmenting them first, as it will greatly speed up the search. 2. Put all your games into two directories - those you play alot and those you have just for the sake of having them. If you want to quickly load one of your favorites, just make the Games and Games (Alternate) directories the same on the Search Settings Screen. 3. Turn off loading reviews and aliasing, since neither has any real importance to playing games. 4. If none of your games have cheats (or you just don't want them) then choose not to load them. 5. Never have more than one instance of VGB-Max running at once. 6. Don't use the verbose messages, delay line interrupts, or check for cartridge validity because that'll just slow you down. 7. Turn sound off if you don't have a sound card installed! 8. Don't delete or move VGB.EXE, VGB-DBG.EXE, gifs, or games while VGB-Max is running. 9. Don't compress ROM images in ZIP files unless you're pressed for space on your hard drive. Checking ZIP files takes much longer than loading straight from a GB file. In fact you can turn off ZIP file checking to speed up loading. 10. Make sure the default gif is in the selected gifs directory. 11. Don't modify the game properties unless you've carefully read section C in VGB-MAX.DOC. 12. Don't try to edit VGB-MAX.DAT by yourself - I mean it. 13. Don't store gif files or overiding options in GAMES.LST, because VGB-Max v3.0 and v.31 will ignore them, even though earlier versions did not. 14. Run CONVERT.EXE on .CFG file before importing if the CFG file is outdated, otherwise alot of commands will be ignored. 15. If emulation is chunky, try increasing the number of interrupts and increase the period to 100000 cycles. 16. Turn the "Delete CFG File After Run" option on to save hard drive space. 17. Write options to .CFG as it takes precedence over VGB-DOS.CFG 18. Don't alias a game to another that has aliased the first. The one you want might not show up if you do. Swapping them is ok though. 19. Make .PIF files for VGB.EXE, VGB-DBG.EXE, and PKUNZIP.EXE. That way you can select the "close on exit" option on the program's property pages and not have to close each one manually.
