~EMU Frequently Asked Questions ~------------------------------- ~HOW DO I MAKE MY LOGITECH WINGMAN WARRIOR WORK? Load the DOS device driver that comes with your Wingman Warrior. It is an automatic process. If you do not have spinner control under Tempest with your Wingman Warrior, please email neil@synthcom.com and describe your system's environment. ~HOW DO I CONFIGURE MY SOUND CARD? EMU Works with Sound Blaster 16 or Sound Blaster 16 compatibles, and keys its settings off the BLASTER environment variable. This must be set for EMU to be able to speak. ~DOES EMU WORK WITH THE OLD 8 BIT SOUND BLASTER BOARD? No. ~I GET A HANG WHEN EMU STARTS. WHAT DO I DO? Try "emu -vidselect" to manually select a video card. If that doesn't work, try "emu -nosound" to keep sound supressed. If that fails, try "emu -nojoy" to remove joystick support. If none of these work, contact neil@synthcom.com or send a message to emu@synthcom.com describing your problem. ~EMU LOCKS UP, DOES WEIRD THINGS, ETC... WHEN STARTED Provided that you have already checked the video setting, try removing any memory managers you have installed. I have changed EMU over from using DOS4GW to using PMODE, so hopefully it will be more driver-friendly. ~HOW DO I DO A SCREEN DUMP? While playing a game, hit . ~HOW DO I PAUSE THE GAME? While playing a game, hit . ~HOW DO I CONFIGURE THE KEYS USED BY EACH GAME? Hit ALT-C while the main selector is on top of the game you wish to configure. ~IN THE CONFIGURATION SCREEN, HOW DO I MOVE BETWEEN BOXES? TAB (to move forward) And Shift-TAB (to move back). Will also move forward. Hit when you're finished making changes. IN THE KEY CONFIGURATION BOX: Use the up and down arrow keys to select which function you'd like to assign a new key to. Press , and "** HIT KEY **" will blink at the function. Press the key you'd like to assign to that function. Cannot be assigned to anything. It is used to get out of the game. IN THE DIP SWITCH SETTING BOX: The number of dipswitches that appear will vary depending upon how many dip switches the game has. Dip switches are shown from switch 1-8 from left to right. Up is ON, and Down is OFF. Use the left and right arrow keys to move to various dip switches. Use up and down to turn an individual switch on and off. The selected switch will blink. Press TAB to advance to the next dip switch bank, or next box. Press "R" to reset the game. Sometimes modified dip switches won't register until the game is restarted. IN THE SPEED SETTING BOX: Use the up and down arrows to select the speed of the game. SLOW Is half the processor speed, NORMAL is normal speed, FAST is 50% faster than the normal processor speed, and INSANE is all speed throttling removed. IN THE SCREEN RESOLUTION SETTING BOX: Use the up and down arrows to select which resolution you'd like the game to be played. Greyed options indicate that those video modes are not supported by the video card. MOUSE & JOYSTICK BOX IS NOT SELECTABLE IN THE 2.0 & 2.1 RELEASES! ~I HEARD A RUMOR THAT I CAN CHANGE THE ORIENTATION ON SPACE INVADERS & SPACE ~INVADERS II. HOW DO I DO THIS? Providing that no changes have been made to the keyboard assignments, hitting "H" during gameplay will toggle the orientation between horizontal and vertical. This state will be remembered on a per-game basis. ~WHY CAN'T I SEE SPACE INVADERS IN VERTICAL MODE? Most likely because your video card doesn't support 1024X768. Check the settings with Space Invaders by doing an ALT-C to configure the game. If 1024X 768 is greyed out, that mode is not available to you. ~ARE MY SETTINGS SAVED WHEN I MAKE CHANGES TO THE GAMES' CONFIGURATION? Yes. When you shut down, EMU saves all known configurations for all games. All changes you make are static. ~WHAT'S THE EMU.REG FILE FOR? It's where all of the games' settings, EMU's settings, and various other goodies are stored. ~CAN I EDIT THE EMU.REG FILE? Do so at your own risk, but there's nothing in there you can't edit within EMU itself. Besides, it's a binary file, and only masochists do that. ;-) ~SPACE INVADERS & SPACE INVADERS II ARE SCREWED UP. WHAT'S THE DEAL? You're very observant. ;-) The emulations of these two games are not complete. ~SPACE INVADERS & SPACE INVADERS II LOOK SCREWY IN THE CONFIGURATION SCREEN. Again, very observant! The reason is that each game had to be squished to get it to fit in the box. ~ATI MACH 64 SHOWS UP ON TOP 1/4 OF SCREEN There are essentially two revisions of the ATI Mach 64 video card - the "early" one (which EMU natively supports) and the "later" one (which EMU supports only through VESA). Do an "emu -vidselect" and select "VESA". ~WHAT'S WRONG WITH RED BARON? Read the release notes. ~WHY NO SOUND IN ASTEROIDS? HOW COME NO BOOMS OR EXPLOSIONS IN DELUXE? Read the release notes.
