Motor Mania (Demo Version) Motor Mania Copyright 1989 by Eric Hewitt Please feel free to copy this demo version and give it to friends or upload it to a bulletin board, etc. Requires: 256K or more CGA or better graphics adapter (no Hercules) Do not have any memory resident programs (Sidekick, etc.) or Vdisk in memory when running the game The following files must be in the current directory to run Motor Mania: MM.COM TRACKS.DAT JUMPS.DAT SCREENS.DAT I. Description Motor Mania is high speed motorbike game in which you are the rider, and you are attempting to race through a series of jumps in a limited amount of time. You must keep track of your temperature so as to prevent overheating, and you must stay out of the way of other racers. You must also keep your bike balanced to prevent crashing. This game is much like the arcade game Excitebike. II. Getting Started To start the game, type MM at the DOS prompt. If the game does not run, you probably have screwed something up. Check to be sure all files are on the current directory, make sure you have enough memory, and make sure you have a CGA or better card. Make sure there are no memory resident programs. Then try it again. You must now configure it to your system. First, after running the game it will ask you if you have a color monitor. If you have one, press the Y key (no enter), if not, press the N key. Then you will then see the Title screen. By the way, the bike is a Honda XR250R. At this screen, the arrow keys have the following effect: Down arrow - Move the menu selector down one item Up arrow - Move the menu selector up one item Left arrow - Show fastest times and highest scores in a decreasing order Right arrow - Show fastest times and highest scores in an increasing order Enter - Select the high-lighted menu item You will first want to select the number of players. To do this press the down arrow a few times until the 'Set Number of Players' is high-lighted. To the right you will see 'Now = 1 Player.' If you want two players, press Enter once. If not, then it is already set for one player, so continue on. Next, you need to decide if you will use Joystick or Keyboard. This decision should not take an extended amount of time, I hope. If you have a joystick, and it has two buttons, you will probably want to use it. It must have two buttons to use it! If not, go on to the next paragraph. If you do have a joystick, you will need to calibrate it. Select 'Calibrate Joystick' from the main menu and follow the directions for calibration. Note on Joystick calibration: As you may already know, joystick calibration can often times be very annoying. I have tried to make a good joystick calibration routine, but it may not be perfect for every joystick on the market. If the game acts strange with your joystick, try changing the trim adjusts and try calibrating it again. With a little experimenting you should be able to fix the problem. If you will be using the keyboard, decide if the keys listed below will work well with your keyboard. If they will, go on to the next paragraph, if not, select 'Change Keyboard Keys' from the menu and follow the directions. Now you are ready to begin. You have only a demo version of the real game, so you will see only one track, and only a small number of the jumps and obstacles. Choose 'Start Game' from the menu and press Enter. You will now see the Entering Track screen. This will show you that you are entering track number 1, qualifying race. This means that you will be racing against the clock only, and that there will not be opponents to race against. To get opponents, you'll have to buy the real version for $15.00. Well, anyway, read the following, and when you are ready, press F9 or a joystick button to start the game. III. Game Controls The following is a description of the game controls: _______________________________________________________________________ Keyboard: Up arrow (8) Left arrow (4) Right arrow (6) Down arrow (2) F9 F10 _______________________________________________________________________ Joystick: Button 1 Button 2 Up Left Right Down _______________________________________________________________________ The functions of the keys are as follows: Up arrow - Change one lane in an upward direction Down arrow - Change one lane in a downward direction Left arrow - Rotate bike in a counter clock-wise direction Right arrow- Rotate bike in a clock-wise direction F9 or button 1 -Normal speed of bike or run back to bike after a crash F10 or button 2 - Turbo speed of bike Ctrl+Scroll Lock - Stop game and return to main menu Esc - Pause game until Esc is pressed again IV. Game Play The object of the game is to race through a series of jumps in a limited amount of time. To do this you must jump over jumps, and miss obstacles as fast as possible. At the start of the game you will see yourself on your Honda bike, and the track. Below this is your temperature gauge, your score, your time, and the fifth place time. The fifth place time is the time you must beat to qualify. After the starting beep, beep, beep, BEEP, hold down button one or two to get moving. Button one is the normal speed of your bike. Button two is the turbo. If you hold down button two for too long, you will hear a high pitched warning tone, and then your engine will over-heat, and you will have to stop for a while to let your engine cool. This wastes a lot of time, so try not to over-heat. Soon, you will come up to the first jump. It is usually a good idea to press the left arrow when coming up to a jump to prevent crashing, but don't hold the left arrow too long. You can only pull a wheely for a short amount of time. If you hold it too long, you will crash. As you come over the jump, if you push left, you will jump very high, and you will slow down considerably. So, to keep your speed, push right when you are clear of the jump. This will point the front of you bike down and keep you from catching too much air. But, you must push left when you hit the ground, or you will bounce on your front tire and crash. If you crash your bike, you will roll for a short time, and then you will be thrown up above the track. You must run back to your bike and get on as fast as you can. To do this, press F9 or button 1 repeatedly until you arrive at your bike. Then you can continue on through the course. Continue throughout the race until the end, and if you didn't crash or overheat too many times, you will qualify and can go on to the next race. Unfortunately for you, there is no next race. You must buy the real version to get the rest of the tracks. IV. Hints on Playing When you are in the air, either let off the button, or press button 1 (F9). It is a waste of temperature to hold turbo while you are in the air and can get no traction. It is not always necessary to pull to the left when you come up to a jump. You will only crash on the steeps ones, so sometime you may not want to pull back. V. Major Reasons for Crashing You may sometimes wonder why you crashed in a certain instance. The following is a list of reasons for crashing: Pulling left and riding a wheely for too long. Landing on your front tire after a crash. Not pulling left to bring your front wheel up on steep jumps. Pushing right when you are going up a jump. Holding to the right when you hit the ground or a jump. VI. Ordering the real version.
