<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ZONE RAIDERS v1.02 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is a work-in-progress demo of the forthcoming game ZONE RAIDERS(tm), a new action-packed, role playing simulation from Image Space Incorporated. The game will incorporate the latest 3D graphics and game technology, featuring the CUBE(tm) 3D graphics engine. TECHNOLOGY ---------- The CUBE graphics engine offers the following features for the ultimate gaming experience: - REAL 3-D fully textured graphics - A Virtual world database in all three dimensions - REAL 3-D completely interactive opponents - Real world lighting models with infinite and local lights - Atmospheric haze and fog of any color - TRUE dynamics and kinematics movement models - Multimedia digitized animation sequences. - TRUE multi-port, multi-view scenes for rear-view mirrors - Intelligent, fully interactive opponents - 3D Studio database, texture, and lighting support The CUBE is unique in its ability to take full advantage of the parallel processing power inherent in the 486DX/DX2/Pentium chips. STORY ---- Game play will involve raiding various zones to obtain the materials necessary to advance to new levels, all in the industry's HOTTEST textured 3D virtual environment! The game is set in the near future where our societies have become so fragmented that counties have been divided into states, states into cities, and cities into zones. Each zone has become an isolated world unto itself. Zone lords strictly enforce their borders and airwaves. All inter-zone commerce, traffic, and communication has come to a stop, except ... out of this isolation has come a generation of marauders known simply as Zone Raiders. Using converted ancient vehicles, they come without warning, and plunder at will. As the player, and the leader of a band of Zone Raiders, it is up to you to retrieve the necessary materials from each zone and return safely. Each zone has various levels of defenses, including hovering zone rovers and auto-tracking ground guns. Each mission must be completed within a certain time before the zone lord becomes aware of your presence. Drive fast, shoot them all, and take everything in sight. DEMO ---- The demo requires a 486DX or better PC with 4 MB free RAM and VGA graphics. A joystick is recommemded for maximum control, and will be automatically detected if present. The demo requires approximately 2 MB of hard disk space after decompression. A math coprocessor is REQUIRED. A 486SX, 486SX/2, Nx586, or similar chip will not work. If you have a 486-compatible CPU without a floating-point coprocessor, then Zone Raiders is the best reason yet to get a DX2 upgrade. If the demo cannot detect a coprocessor, but you are SURE you have one, then you may override the FPU check with the "-fpu" command line flag. If you do not have a coprocessor and you use the "-fpu" flag, your computer will most certainly crash. After unzipping raid.zip, type "install" to unzip the demo. There is no sound support in this demo. GAME PLAY --------- The demo highlights driving on the Zone G track. Use a joystick or mouse if possible, since keyboard driving is tricky. Your vehicle (a seriously modified antique) is equipped with a hoverplate and omnithruster, allowing for dangerously high speeds and neck-snapping maneuverability. An inertial mass brake is also available for those (rare) times when slowing down seems appropriate. The demo allows bashing into the highway walls with only a slight speed penalty. Occasional use of brakes (hah!) and reverse thrust allows for more control to get through the track faster. Totally reckless driving (recommemnded) will sometimes result in a quick death. Restarts are automatic. To start the Zone Raiders demo, type "zr". DRIVING ------- Joystick - The best way to drive. Forward for forward thrust, backward for reverse thrust. Sideways will spin sharply at low speeds, and turn normally at cruising speed. The joystick is calibrated only the first time the demo is run. Delete the 'jstick.dat' file to recalibrate. Mouse - Press and hold the left mouse button for forward thrust, and the right mouse button for reverse thrust. Reverse thrust overrides forward thrust. Move the mouse sideways to steer. Watch the steering bars on the dash to center the steering. Keyboard - Up/down arrows for thrust, left/right arrows for steering. Multiple keys may be pressed simultaneously (on older keyboards, use the numeric keypad for multiple keypresses.) Brakes override all thrust, and are very useful for slowing down. Key Function --- -------- joystick forward/backward forward/reverse thrust mouse left/right button forward/reverse thrust up/down arrow forward/reverse thrust joystick left/right left/right steering mouse left/right left/right steering left/right arrow left/right steering space bar brakes esc quit ctrl-F toggle full screen mode ctrl-D toggle dashboard ctrl-C toggle mouse/joystick (if joystick present) center mouse (if no joystick) F1 through F8 increase detail. F1 is fastest (no lights, no haze) and F8 most detailed (Gouraud lighting, local lighting, haze) F9 save current position (to RAM) F10 restore last saved position A record/playback mode allows you to record a run (up to 5000 frames), and then play it back from just outside of one of the speeders used by the zone goons (the antique is still being modified.) The keys are: ctrl-R start/stop recording ctrl-P start/stop playback joystick forward/backward up/down pitch about speeder mouse left/right button up/down pitch about speeder joystick left/right left/right yaw about speeder mouse left/right left/right yaw about speeder Hold down joystick/mouse button one and move joystick/mouse to zoom in/out. Experiment with the F1 through F8 keys to get the right combination of detail, lighting, and frame rate for your computer. Let us know what you think of this demo, or if you have any problems.
